Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Norton Safe Web was one of the best filters for internet traffic.

Now it's one of the worst.

Testing at Malwaretips was my first indication.  This thread has all the info on this:

https://malwaretips.com/threads/updated-3-9-2018-browser-extension-compa...

Not believing what they were saying.... I did some of those same tests myself.

And yep.... what they were saying is accurate.  Those tests are totally able to be replicated and verified.

Is Norton Safe Web going to become good again?

Thanks,

-Frank

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Seems like a nice feature.... the web isolation.

But we still need really good web filtering (with or without isolation).

Norton Safe Web used to be really good at this.

Is the Safe Web team going to bring the effectiveness back?

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

I hope sometimes we could use web protection without extensions. Kaspersky and Bitdefender do this, and Symantec could do it also I believe.

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

So.... can the Norton Safe Web team be contacted, and then make them aware that multiple tests have indicated that Norton Safe Web is not performing to past standards.  Ask if there is a reason why.  Possibly the team was focused on getting rid of the toolbar and creating new isolation capabilities.   And ask if Norton Safe Web will improve... and get back to the effective capability that it was.

Thank you.

Another test.

And Norton Safe Web is among to worst tested.

And again, this test is completely repeatable and verifiable.  With my medium-level knowledge, I was able to replicate an earlier test with the same result.

Has anybody contacted the Safe Web Team?

What are they doing to bring back what was once a fine capability?

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Hello Franck V,

I do not understand how you can reach this conclusion with the test which is searchable with the last link you give, with regard to the tester's own words:

《 I won't test Norton Safe web and DNS security.》

That being said, I agree with you. It seems to me that Norton Safe Web does not always have the responsiveness and completeness that a tool like this should have. It must be admitted that the speed and the capacity of a url to change from safe to dangerous and to return to safe is not comparable to the resources that must be implemented to establish a real monitoring of the entire web.

I assume that Symantec's purchase of Bluecoat is related to this thinking, and that Norton Safe Web should continue to improve in the future ...

Yeah, he said that... but apparently changed his mind.  Here are the test results:

=====

Test Sep 6 /2018, all from VT 60 links

Spoiler: links

chrome 49/60
ublock (custom) 35/60 => all blocks were from hphosts (full + partial = EMD+PSH+HJK+...)
avira 2/60
blocksi (block unrated) 60/60
comodo 0/60
malwarebytes 39/60
WDBP 4/60
Norton 3/60
Edge/IE 19/59

Forticlient 53/60
Kaspersky 53/60
K9 (default/custom = same result) 59/60

((Higher is better))

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Thank you Franck V you're totaly right, I had not paid attention to the results of the second test.

The result of Norton Safe Web is very bad and I hope as I said that the tool will continue to progress.

However, I draw your attention to the size of the sample tested, it only covers 60 sites.

In my opinion, the result on such a small sample clearly varies in relation to the geographical distribution of the probes and the clients, the processing times, the existing false positives, the other protection modules of the products ...

It does not remove the result of the test!

Exactly.  Yes, the sample set is small.  But of course the cumulative sample set with different tests over time gets larger.

And the trend.... that's the thing.

Norton Safe Web used to be great and respected -- as reflected in that same thread.

Now it's effectively useless.

Web Filtering is Important.

"The result of Norton Safe Web is very bad."

Well, welcome to the party (laughs).  I've been saiyan for years both here AND on Safe Web itself that it needs to become more comprehensive/ responsive.  Especially, when i'm reporting on domains that my N360 is blocking outright attacks and Safe Web has the green check of approval (facepalm)

Checked ~30 sites from Phishtank today and Firefox Safe Web blocked only 4 sites

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Hello

If you find sites that are evaluated incorrectly according to your Norton product, please make a list of the sites that need to be re-evaluated. I can then have Safe Web Team re-evaluate the sites. Please give the complete link to the site. If the site is malicious, please make the link not clickable.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

We are not telling about some sites. This is just a Safe Web protection level..

@Frank V,

@Hammer_Bro,

Hello to you 2,

I'm sorry, but by quoting me, you take my words out of their contexts.

I invite you to reread my messages. I said: The result of Norton Safe Web is very bad in the second test which is based on a very small sample and probably does not take into account the environment of the tool.

The result of the test is certainly factual, but the test conditions are not really detailed. And above all we can not extrapolate anything with such a small sample.

Have a good day.

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Has this concern been passed to the Norton Safe Web team?

Will they communicate with us on this forum and tell us what the future holds?

Thanks,

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Why won't Norton talk to the user community about what's going on?

This is the official Symantec Norton forum..... right?

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Hello Frank

The Norton Community Forum is mainly a user to user Forum. Sometimes a Symantec Employee might contribute. A Norton Employee will have a Red Badge next to their user name.

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

So how do I communicate with official Norton about this?

Kudos0

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

The answer appears to be....  "You don't communicate with Norton."

That is sort of a basic of customer service.

Why?

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

In yet another test, Norton Safe Web gets hammered -------------- again.

It used to be much better than Bitdefender Traffic Light... but not anymore.

Why?

Re: Norton Safe Web Turning Lame..

Not that anybody at Norton seems to care.... But in another test, Norton Safe Web gets absolutely destroyed.

Why?

So 38 links with malware were tested.  Fortinet and Kaspersky got 38 of 38.  Norton Safe Web got 6.

forticlient 38/38
kaspersky 38/38

chrome 37/38

K9 34/38

bitdefender 32/38

WDBP 31/38 - downloaded 12

malwarebytes 25/38

avira 19/38

norton 6/38

comodo 2/38

squidblacklist 10/38

https://malwaretips.com/threads/updated-24-11-2018-browser-extension-com...

Once again, this used to be a strength of Norton.  What happened?

Why won't Norton address this?

One might think that a business should respond to their customers.
