Norton Secure VPN not usable

I have Norton Secure VPN. I frequently had 'No Internet Access', inaccessable web sites, very slow Internet response issues.  These problems all went away as soon as I turned off Secure VPN.  I had a long session with a Norton Tech and the best he could do was say that even though the problems always went away immediately after I turned off the product, the issue was not in his product and he had no other explanation.  Thank you Norton but I will not renew the subscription.

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

Norton just announced updates to both the standalone VPN and the VPN that is included in the new 360 product line. See if these updates help with any of your issues.

Standalone announcement.

New 360 VPN announcement.

I frequently had 'No Internet Access', inaccessable web sites, very slow Internet response issues.

The inaccessible web sites may have nothing to do with the VPN. Some sites are able to detect that you are using a VPN and will block your access, possibly for legal reasons.

The slow response times can be caused by all the overhead of a VPN while your data is encrypted going out and decrypted coming back to your computer. This happens with all VPNs. It depends on how much of a speed reduction you are seeing from your speed tests. Some users here have seen horrendous reductions that Norton does not seem to be able to figure out.

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

I have done all the Norton updates with no impact on my experience with the VPN product.  I am quite disappointed with the level of support from Norton.  There are several recent threads reporting issues with this product.  I have pulled the plug on the auto renewal of this product subscription and recommend others do so as well.

What sites, or kind of sites, are you having issues accessing?

How much does the VPN reduce your internet speeds? Can you post your speedtests with and without the VPN?

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

The driver for my decision to pull the plug is a year of frustration with the product and it time to consider renewal.  It was disabled more than used so I could get work done.  I also had a long, frustrating, non-productive session with a Norton Chat representative that accomplished nothing.  I have attached a copy of an error I have received all too frequently while using Norton VPN.

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

I was a little excited when I received an email from Norton saying that there was an update that may solve this problem. But the problem still exists because I already had the update installed. I'm very disappointed in Norton after years of using it, with this upgrade to 360. This is what happens when you take something that works and break it, by adding extra crap to it.

Absolutely agree with you on this mate!

The Secure VPN included in the new Norton 360 Deluxe is rubbish.  I have three systems with the software installed and it will not work/connect on any of them.  Complete waste of time and computer resources.

I have now modified my systems so that the Norton Secure VPN executable and service no longer start with the system.  At least the rubbish software is no longer using any of my system resources.

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

Overall, I've been happy with the Secure VPN product, with the exception of the severe internet speed hit.  I'm pretty sure that it has nothing to do with the fact that I added SecureVPN to my existing Norton internet security software provided free by Comcast.  Here is why I think that:

System A:  HP Desktop (16 GB RAM, SSD), OS = Win 10 Home, Norton Internet Security Suite V22.19.8.65; Norton SecureVPN V1.9.0.565, Speed test = https://speedtest.xfinity.com/

Without VPN average:  473.2 Mbps

With VPN average:  110.4 Mbps

77% speed loss!

System B:  Acer laptop (8 GB RAM, SSD), OS = Win 10 Home, COMODO  Internet Security Premium V12.0; Norton SecureVPN V1.9.0.565, Speed test = https://speedtest.xfinity.com/

Without VPN average:  473.5 Mbps

With VPN average:  64.7 Mbps

86% speed loss!

I used the same Ethernet cable for both systems and ran the speed test from a fresh start three times to arrive at the average value indicated above. .  I conclude that this performance issue has little to do with what internet security software you're running.  It seems to be specific to the Norton VPN standalone product.  I plan on evaluating other VPN competitors before renewing my contract with Norton.  This amount of performance reduction seems far beyond what it should be for encryption/decryption reasons.  I really hope that someone from Norton can figure out what is really going on here.  I love the protection that Norton VPN is providing, but I'm not sure it's worth the performance hit that it costs.

Please let us know how you make out with the evaluation of other VPNs. The user in this thread found that all VPNs they tested had the same massive speed degradation on their systems. So the issue for them, and maybe you, does not seem to be related to the VPN software. If we could only figure out what it is related to, we could possibly resolve the issue for the many here seeing these speed reductions. It could be a Windows configuration issue, a hardware issue, and ISP system issue,or .....?????

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

These are the results of my Speedtest by Ookla.

Download Test Error
A socket error occurred during the download test. A firewall could be blocking the connection or the server might be having some issues. Please try again later.

Alternatively, check out our free Speedtest for Desktop apps for more reliable testing. th

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I ran the test just before without vpn running and I got 20mb download and 1.85 upload. With VPN it doesn't want to connect to the servers. I only have a 25 mbps service with Centurylink. I used to be a comcast customer and when I moved, it wasn't available in my area.

I remember a long while back I was fooling around with vpn's a little on a Windows 7 computer and they all ran a little slower back then, but the Norton VPN seemed to run freely. Almost like nothing was holding it back. Personally I think that Windows 10 has something to do with it. I ran into a dialogue window one time that had something to do with firewall, but I can't seem to find it again. I didn't understand the settings they were giving at the time, so I let it go. That's a big problem with computers these days, when they make software programs they really don't think of the consumer as much as they should. I just like going to the store, buying something and it working when I get it home.

I hope they solve this problem.

Thanks

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

I just installed a trial version of AVG VPN and it either works great or it's not working at all. I say this because everything is working very quickly. Actually, maybe a little better than without a VPN. So if this is the way a VPN is supposed to work, I'm sold. How do you check a VPN?

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

Here's a proposal to test your VPN software & connection to determine what performance hit you'll take by running it.  Start by selecting a internet speed test website.  I use https://speedtest.xfinity.com/, but there are many others and they will all work fine.

  1. With your VPN turned on, run a speed test three times and average the numbers
  2. Turn off your VPN, and repeat #1
  3. The difference between those two averages represents the "cost" of using VPN.  If it's reasonable, then it's way worth it IMHO.

In my case, I'm losing about 70% to 80% of my speed and that seems way excessive to me, but I haven't tried any other products yet.  Perhaps I'll try the free AVG VPN and test it out.  If you aren't seeing any difference with & without AVG VPN, it's hard for me to believe that it's really encrypting and decrypting your traffic.  I'll report back what I find when I get around to it.

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

I completed my comparison of Norton SecureVPN and AVG VPN and here are the results:

Norton VPN on:  135.5 Mbps; VPN off:  473.4 Mbps; Speed Reduction:  71%

AVG VPN on:  158.8 Mbps; VPN off:  473.5 Mbps; Speed Reduction:  66%

There wasn't a ton of improvement in speed using the AVG product.  What I did like about AVG is that they offered a 7-day free trial with no credit card required.  It made it very easy to try it without commitment.

I keep seeing ads saying that Express VPN is "the fastest".  I plan on putting that one to the test too and I'll report my results when they're in.

Has anyone else noticed that Norton VPN asks me to log back in frequently now.  For the first few months I used it, I never had to repeat my login.  Just wondering.

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

This is something I noticed in "Network & Internet "STATUS" (Network Status) when I turn on Norton VPN, my network changes from wifi to ethernet 2 connection. You get to these settings by right clicking on the wifi icon on the taskbar and selecting "Open Network & Internet Settings".

I have no idea why this happens or what it means. Just trying to add information to the topic.

Two pics in zip file attached.

Thanks......…………..

Re: Norton Secure VPN not usable

This happens because when the VPN is active, you are connecting to the internet through a virtual Ethernet adapter.
