Norton Security on Amazon?

Hello ALL:

Just a quick question...Amazon has the Downloadable NS for $19.99. How can we be sure it is for 5 Devices?

Also, just what is actually downloaded...just a key and link, and I assume the 1 year still starts when we actually install it!

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

When activated....and NS requires a Norton account.  So, sub starts when activated and registered.

I posted the link so you can go to checkout and hopefully before you pay you'll see 5
NS at 75% off should be 5 seats ~ <<Note: You can access this item in Your Software Library. The number of computers eligible for installation may vary.>>
$80 is list for 5 seats ~ Norton is remiss everywhere in mentioning # of seats...

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

Yes, that is why I asked about the number of seats in this version. Glad sub does not start right away. I have 'til March on my NIS 2014. Perhaps the shutdown issue will be fixed by then?

Also, do we get a file we can burn to CD/USB etc, or is it just a code so we install and activate it? Not sure how NS is packaged for d/l.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

You can always ask Amazon to confirm it is the 5 Device version.

Even Norton's own website does not say how many devices it is for when they quote the price, and it is the same undiscounted as on Amazon .... $79.99

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

I went ahead and bought it on Amazon even thought I could not find any indication about how many users were included. Staples has a Black Friday sale on the 5 user version for a Final Cost of $19.99 but it requires waiting for a $40 debit card rebate, so I’m hoping the Amazon deal is for 5 users.

All you get from Amazon is the license key and a link to Symantec’s site for activation and downloading. You cannot download it from your Amazon Software Library as you would with most software purchased from Amazon.

I’m concerned about the 2 major issues in NS (slow shutdowns which is slowly being addressed and no local SONAR scanning which looks like it is being ignored by Symantec) but for $20 I’ll stick with Norton for one more round.

I have 152 days left on my N360 subscription so I’m going to try the NS trial and if I don’t like it I’ll drop back to N360 and hope that my new NS subscription does not start until activated.

Since your NS is not running down its clock and the shut down delay has not yet had a fix released yet, why not wait to even try NS rather than try something that will mislead you as to how it performs?

I still have 124 days left so it may be worth it to buy from Amazon and wait for the shutdown fix.

Not sure what to do about my win 8.1 newbuild, however as it will be 64 bit!

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

While, Amazon at one time was offering a 1 or 3 device version for cheap (I don't recall which it was) -- look at the regular posted price for this version = $79.99.  It sure looks like the full deal.

It is a bit confusing since the page does contain the following language: " Note: You can access this item in Your Software Library. The number of computers eligible for installation may vary." But given the posted normal price that is red-lined  I can not believe it's anything but the full 5-device version. I don't believe Amazon plays tricks like that. This is Amazon not Crazy Eddie's.

Early - on many were reporting problems activating their NS software downloaded from Amazon. Some had to use Norton CS. Finally, someone figured out the solution. Download the software from Norton. So I guess they have just stopped providing a download and are just selling the subscription key, Outrageously great deal.

How long does it take Norton to process a request for a refund under their 60-day money back guarantee? LOL

I mean the 60-day-refund makes this offer a joke on Norton. ANYONE who bought NS from Norton still has just under 30 days to request a refund. This deal by Amazon makes no sense for Norton IMHO. Maybe Norton angered Amazon with the the initial activation screw-ups. The Amazon price is ridiculous :-)

Offer expires December 2

Hi :-)

I posted earlier about this awesome deal.

In my post I made some reference to Norton's 60 day money back guarantee and how anyone who bought NS would now ask for a refund and buy it on Amazon.

Some guys just can't count LOL - 60 days from 9/23/14 is past. But my post, which I can't edit because it has disappeared for now, as is often the case on this forum's screwy forum software would still be applicable to many who paid full price at the Norton Store.

NIS is fine on Windows 8* (by which I mean 8.0 onwards including 8.1Update).

I'm using it on 32 bit version but it has always worked fine on 64 bit as well.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

(In reply to Hugh yesterday at 8:30 ..... not sure how to include his quote)

Actually one of my N360 3 user licenses has 152 days left but my other N360 3 user license expired recently. I have 3 computers that are online 24/7 (with active subscription) and 1 dedicated to financial data that normally stays offline (expired subscription). During my renewal shopping I learned of NS and the new 5 user configurations so I installed Panda free antivirus & ZoneAlarm free firewall on the laptop that rarely goes online to get me by until the active subscription expires. Now that I've learned that remaining days can be added to a new NS subscription I could migrate all 4 computers to NS and not lose any days.

I am aware, thanks to this forum, of the SONAR issue if an active Internet link isn't available but I do not run any 'foreign' programs on the financial laptop.

I installed the NS trial 24 hours ago and so far have not seen the slow shutdown issue and Internet Explorer is much faster with NS than N360. So far, so good; keeping my fingers crossed.

MPSAN,

One thing I forgot about Norton and 64bit -- I'm not sure if the Norton Toolbar works on 64 bit Browsers, but since last I new the default browser in Windows 64 bit is the 32 bit version that should not be a problem .... I don't use the toolbar so I've never had to find out.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

I can confirm that the $19.99 USD Amazon offer is indeed for 5 seats like the usual $79.99 USD. This offer is probably the only reason for me to stick with Norton/Symantec, as other quality AV vendors have had very good deals in the past. However, short of being free, I have never gotten a better retail price on AV software for 5 PCs.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

You get a link for the download as well as a software key. The link is direct from Norton so it will continue working so you just have to store the link and the key in a safe place. You could actually download the file and store it to a CD if you wanted.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

I don't know anything about the others, and not much about IE <g>

With Windows 8* you have an APP simplified IE browser which comes up from the Start Screen and, I think, can come up on the Desktop screen but there you can also pull up the normal IE that we are used to. I'm not in 8 at the moment so I can't check this nor exactly how.

I gather from posts here that the Norton Toolbar has problems with other than IE regardless of bittery ...... or is it vice versa?

The vanity links are 100+MB.  The Amazon link may be to the NortonNSDownloader which is <1MB.  Either way you end up with the latest version after running LU till no more updates.  Posted the vanity full installer link just in case Amazon link no go.
You may also use the Trial and squeeze 29 days out of Norton and then activate with Amazon key.  Amazon is reputable vendor and key will activate NS / NSBU from where ever you pull it...

OK, so I ASSUME that the link that asks for my key is only to get the downloader and does NOT start my days. Amazon gives the link as norton.com/setup but you need the key. You can go there and see what we mean.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

I'm fairly certain that only adds the service to your Norton account for download/seat management, but does not activate it. It should only activate when downloaded and executed for the first time. Again, I didn't use this method, though, as you can use the supplied key to activate within the installed product and bypass that part altogether. When NS prompts for a log in after installation, it will then add to your Norton account all the same. Personally, I'd check with Norton chat support prior to using the /setup link to be sure nothing is activated that way if you prefer to use it.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

MPSAN,

Since there are other paths to download NS as bjm_ mentions (vanity (not sure what that means) or Trial (which I downloaded with a 110MB size)) why bother with the Amazon link? Your key will always be available in your Amazon Software Library. When the time comes to install NS, download the latest version directly from Symantec or install the version you download now and bring it up to date with LU.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

Great Everyone. Yes, I have the key, and to suggest I contact CHAT was a good idea as well. In fact I did do that last night and it became a LONG chat session. The person has the usual thank you for contacting us messages and wanted to help me install NS now. He wanted to know my key to see which product I had and to verify it was a good key! I almost asked him to read my question again, but it seemed like he had a "script" to follow. I never did get an answer to the /setup vs /latestns question. The rep was focused on helping me install it now. I even said it was for a new system I was building now, and he said fine he can help me install it on my current system(s). I finaly said I had to go and he said he will keep the tag open for 2 weeks or 1 week.

Anyway, I think I will use the /latestns link when I finish building my new system. I guess I will install Win 8.1 first, and see how it goes and then Firefox. Then I believe I will install NS.

Just a thought Windows then NS then Firefox
(Download NS latest on other device and move to new build)
Norton has to be fully updated to be compatible with FF Toolbar and you want to check NS settings are to your liking...and exercise NS for a few to see all is as it should be...included testing new online vault... sorta' take it for a test drive with IE and download NS latest from IE running default Defender + Win FW
If not to your liking ~ still think NS should precede Firefox

Kudos0

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

Thank you. Using it first on my other systems does make sense but I will KEEP the local vault on them. The new system will be forced to use the Cloud Vault. I guess it makes sense to install NS before FF to be sure we have the latest updates.

I have a subscription (that just auto-resubbed a few days ago...~350 days left) for Norton Internet Security (v21.6.0.32). I know this sale is for Norton Security. What's the difference? Is what I have a more inclusive product? Would buying a key help me? Can I add a key and add "time" to my subscription or would it simply run concurrently because they are different products and neither is an upgrade on the other? I've looked at them and I'm not able to make sense of it, so rather than call Norton, I thought I'd try here first.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

Steve.....

Good idea to ask here first since you get user views ....

NS is not necessarily "better" than NIS but it is rather more like N360 than NIS apart from the free cloud storage that N360 offered. NS's big advantage for some is that the NS covers up to 5 devices and not 3 while the NS with Backup covers 10 devices and provides 25GB of cloud storage for the backups -- in both cases not restricted to protecting Windows.

See http://us.norton.com/norton-security-antivirus to compare the two NS's and where at the bottom you will see the System Requirements that includes the different operating systems it accepts.

See what others say since I'm not using NS at present.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

SteV1der,

Regarding the difference between Norton Internet Security (NIS) and Norton Security (NS), from a licensing perspective, they are completely different products. From a technical perspective they are similar. NS replaces NIS.

NIS is the older product. Its End of Availability (along with Norton Antivirus and Norton 360) have been announced by Symantec. Norton Security (and Norton Security with Backup) are the replacement products. Symantec has not specifically published information on exactly how long the older products will be supported (they use words like "You will continue to receive protection updates (such as LiveUpdate virus definitions) and you will be able to continue to renew your product for the foreseeable future.").

If you have 350 days left on your NIS subscription, you can purchase a Norton Security license, and then have the days left on your NIS subscription transferred to your NS subscription (by contacting Symantec chat). But as others have pointed out, once you do that ... if you are unhappy with NS, then you CANNOT transfer your subscription days back to NIS.

You could keep your days on NIS subscription, install a free trial of NS and see how you like that product. Then, if you do not like NS, you could remove it and reinstall NIS (which would still have your subscription days).

However, before installing NS, you may want browse these forums. NS still has a few unresolved issues ... some of which are described here, here, and here.

So, you may want to consider remaining on NIS until your subscription runs out. At that point, you could check these forums for the status of any remaining unresolved issues with NS. You could also review various web sites that provide independent comparisons of Security products. Then, make a decision to either renew NIS for another year, purchase a license for NS, or (based on independent comparison ratings) move to some other higher ranked Security product.

Re: Norton Security on Amazon?

Thanks for the input. At this point, the amazing deal is no longer available. It would probably have been worth it to do it, but now, it's not a significant enough deal for me to want to change. If I do get another computer, I wonder if I'm able to install my current version on it somehow or has the download link been eliminated since an EOS has been announced? I'm not even sure if I'm getting a new computer yet, so it's not an emergency. The good news is that I'm happy with my current product, so I'm not terribly upset at missing the deal (though it might have been great).
