Norton Security and WIN7 Action Center

In the last day or two I have seen messages down in the WIN7 Action Center icon in the task bar. One of them says I need to enable either the Windows Firewall or the Norton firewall. I looked at the settings for Norton Internet Security and it says Norton's firewall is on. I have never disabled Norton's firewall on any installation of it.

Why am I getting this message from Windows now and what action, if any, should I take.

Thanks

Ron

Re: Norton Security and WIN7 Action Center

The WMI connection (that Norton uses to tell windows it is running or not) is apparently broken on your computer. One way to fix would be a clean (with NRT) reinstall of Norton. There may be a less drastic way to fix it, someone might come along with some additional advice.

Maybe a check of Windows System files???

Click on Start and type CMD in the search box. Right click on cmd.exe and click on Run as Administrator. Type 'sfc /scannow' without the quotes. This will check your Windows installation and try to correct any errors it finds.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Security and WIN7 Action Center

This problem went away and I am not sure why. But then a day or two later I downloaded Windows updates KB4019112 and KB 4022719 and have had big problems ever since. Lost all restore points, slow boot up, create restore points and then they aren't there. slow operation., etc. Still trying to dig out of that mess.

Kudos to F 4 E for his reply! That referenced website and its Windows Update safety "DefCon" monitoring/status classifications have proved to be invaluable for me for many years. Site owner is Woody Leonhard, author of the many "Windows(x) For Dummies" books that he's written for just about every version of Windows OS that ever came down the turnpike. A huge aid for avoiding the all-too-often-necessity of "obtaining Patches to FIX The Patches" after a rollout of the monthly & latest "Black Tuesday" WinUpdate  by Microsoft.  He aggregates, collects & reports upon WinUpdate bugs & problems encountered & reported by hundreds of thousands of real-world first-hand users, oftentimes including info on specific hardware platforms and software programs negatively impacted by the WinUpdates.

Hi, User 101. Very handy for checking out issues on people's computers that often get blamed on Norton, when it's Microsoft who've caused the problem !
