Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

My Norton product is giving me notification that the my PC isn't automatically protected and there is the option to click fix now.

I checked the settings to see what option is disabled because I don't remember having disabled any option ever.

When I checked the settings, the options in Real time protect about auto protect were disabled but greyed out and a few minutes later, it got enabled somehow but the option is still greyed out and I am not sure what's going. I have not click the Fix Now button because I thought that I should ask here first.

Can somebody explain why the auto protect option is greyed out? Should I click the Fix now option in main window?

Additional info: I have getting this issue since I upgraded my Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit Desktop to Windows 10 pro.

What version of Norton are you using? Yes click fix now. Also run Live Update several times to be sure you have all the necessary updates. If all else fails uninstall and reinstall.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

The version of norton that I am using is 22.7.1.32. I clicked Fix now and it gave me not fixed message.

Any idea about the possible reasons for the options being greyed out? I was just wondering if it could be some malware that has affected the settings or some bug. I am gonna reinstall and see if it fixes.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

Your version is out of date. Current version is 22.8.1.14. It is best to do a complete uninstall then reinstall.

Hello

You can use this link to get a newer version.

www.norton.com/latestns      Please have your key ready if needed. Please run Live Update, restarting as necessary and then run Live Update some more until you get no more updates are available. As was mentioned, the latest version is 22.8.1.14. Restart at least 1 more time and it wouldn't hurt to restart a few times to make sure every thing gets updated. Please also go over your Settings for the program.

Thanks.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

@It'sHistory:

If the overinstallation (flo's suggestion) does not help, try these steps:

  • gain the admin privileges;
  • run Norton Remove and Reinstall tool and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall & reinstallation
  • restart when you finish the above step
  • disable fast startup to avoid/fix unwanted issues
  • run LiveUpdate to get the most recent Norton updates; reboot your 10 when ready.

thx. :)

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

I am having the same problem on a brand new pc and a new copy or version of Norton.  It happens frequently and usually a restart fixes it but not always.  I also noticed when it catches a virus or quarantines it then it seems to grey it out until a restart but as I said a restart does not always fix it.  Every things a two weeks old.  I may have installed some shift programs but ones I have used on my old pc.  I am having administration problems with windows 10.  It says I am the admin but I'm not.  I cant create another either but I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

Two things I have noticed which I hope will help others with this problem.
One if you have MalwareBytes installed setting it to 'enable self protection early start' interferes with Norton, having this disabled seems to stop the auto protect greyed out, also the new Windows Defender peridodic scanning if enabled will also interfere with Norton as that can cause the greyed out setting. Having either or both enabled it may not be obvious that they're the cause as all seems OK at first but after starting or restarting Windows it'll then appear, leaving these enabled the grey auto protect does not enable even after several restarts until I turned them off, then auto protect enabled on restart.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

Hello Brad

Have you removed the preinstalled security program trial with the removal tool from the other security program would help. To change any settings in Norton, you need to be logged in as a Administrator of Window 10. Do not use Edge to install your Norton product. Not everything works in Edge with Norton.

Thanks.

Brad

You say you are restarting your computer. Are you actually doing a restart, or are you shutting down and then starting up again. If you are shutting down, you may not actually getting a full shutdown that is needed to fully fix the things that Norton is trying to fix.

If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

I started getting this problem some months ago. Finally it was so bad that the auto protect would stop functioning after 2 minutes whenever the system was started or restart. Spent some time with two Norton techs but never resolved the issue. They believe it was  a corrupted windows issue. Talked to the computer manf.  ....and spent another 10 hours trying to cure the problem but found no issue.

Found out Norton with this auto protect  was the only security suit I had this problem with. So finally had to load another software and experienced no issues. And I tried three other suits before choosing one....again no issue

I have 2 other systems....16bit ....still with Norton and no issues. I do believe it appears to be something on my system that is causing the issue. However I don't want to go through reloading Windows and all the reinstallation problems.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

I have the latest, updated version of Norton Security Deluxe, as of today - 22.9.1.12

All these are greyed out: Boot Time Protection plus Real Time Protection - Auto-Protect and Removable Media Scan

This has been an ongoing issue for me as well. It happens repeatedly for unknown reasons.

I have contacted Symantec support and rather than fix the bug, the only solution Symantec has is to do a complete uninstall and reinstall.

Most annoying and totally lame.

I had already done a search on the topic, read virtually all the related messages and your reply is not helpful in the least.

Do you get points for every reply, useless or not?

2. the last message in that thread is from 6 Dec 2016

3. the only solution is as I said, uninstall/reinstall.

FWIW ~ I've had Auto-Protect greyed with asterisk that after Restart (not under influence of Fast Startup) changed into Auto-Protect greyed without asterisk.

Auto-Protect greyed will be evident by tray Icon and under Settings Antivirus....Or,
Auto-Protect greyed will be evident by tray Icon and under Security Advanced.

Note: Disable Auto-Protect & Disable Smart-Firewall (tray Icon) are greyed by design with standard user account.

Post back progress.

Re: Norton Security auto protect option greyed out?

OK wow. Maybe you are actually trying to be helpful but these suggestions totally miss the real point here.

The point is; there has been a known bug that has gone unfixed for years now.

That is unacceptable.

I hate to send money to the Russians but its time for Kaspersky.

bjm give it up. It's not fixed and not going to be fixed.

I received an email notice that someone replied to my post here. It's the only reason I am replying since I have switched to Kaspersky and it works well.
