Norton Security with Backup

Used Norton Internet Securities before switching to Norton Security with Backup. The former would tell me that a downloaded file was ok, once the download was complete. The latter doesn't appear to do anything of the kind. Scanned the downloaded files, just as a precaution. Is this standard, or is there a setting that I have to enable?

Download Insight provides information about the reputation of any executable file that you download from supported applications.  And Auto-Protect works on launch.
Occasionally, I notice a delay or I may re-download to bump Norton detection.
YMMV
Norton Internet Security v22.5.4 is same under the hood as Norton Security v22.5.4
Go through Settings to familiarize and confirm preference.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

Hi vienna10:

Please see the support article Configuring the Download Insight Notifications Option.

To check your current setting, from the main Norton Security with Backup window go to Settings | Detailed Settings | Firewall | Intrusion and Browser Protection tab | Download Intelligence | Download Insight Notifications.  If the Download Insight Notifications switch is set to Risks Only, move the switch to the left to the "On" position,  click Apply, and then click Close to receive notifications for all files that you download.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

Checked the setting on all installs. They are all the same, with the switch set to on. This must be the standard configuration, as I have not changed anything since the install.

Just did a couple of test downloads. The first the exe file, with the ok received after about 30 seconds. The second the zip file, where there was no response from Norton after the completion of the file.

The files that prompted the original post were also zip files

Download Insight provides information about the reputation of any executable file that you download from supported applications.

Based on the type of application you use to download your file, your Norton product does one of the following:

  • Analyzes the file based on its reputation details when the download is complete.

  • Analyzes the file based on its reputation details when the file is executed.

The second the zip file, where there was no response from Norton after the completion of the file.
The files that prompted the original post were also zip files.

  And Auto-Protect works on launch.
Auto-Protect runs in the background while you work to continuously scan for viruses and other threats.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

I read with interest the post from Vienna10 about the lack of the Norton notifications for downloaded files.  I just realized that I haven't been receiving them either.  I'm running NS 22.5.4.24 with IE 11 and Firefox 42, Win 10 x64.  I checked my settings and they are as stated in Configuring the Download Insight Notifications Option

Hmm, on W8.1 + FF42 + NS 22.5.4.24 just downloaded executable with Norton flyout.
Granted, View Details took a few mo's to render and sometimes flyout is wait for.

Hi Rag:

As a test, go to the official Adobe Flash Player distribution site at https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html and download (but do not run) the latest Windows offline .EXE installer for Adobe Flash for IE v19.0.0.226 (file name install_flash_player_19_active_x.exe).

I just downloaded this executable file via my Firefox v42.0 browser and the Download Insight pop-up took about 5 sec to display in my system tray using a 5 MB/sec Internet connection.  If your pop-up doesn't appear after a minute or so check your security history (History | Show | Download Insight) and see if an entry for the installer is logged there.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

Hi Imacri,

Did as you suggested about 5 minutes ago and no notification and it does NOT show up in my Download Insight history.  The last time anything showed up in the history was Nov. 4th and I know I have done many downloads since then.  I'm guessing I have some setting screwed up but I don't see anything obvious.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

Hi Rag:

Does this problem occur when you download the Adobe Flash for IE .EXE installer from https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html with both FF42 and IE11, or is the problem browser-specific?

EDIT:

Sorry, I also forgot to ask if Windows Fast Startup is enabled on your system - see peterweb's pinned post Windows 8/8.1 or 10 and Fast Start Feature.  Fast Startup can interfere with your Norton product and loading of dependent services at boot-up and many Norton users have reported that disabling Fast Startup and re-booting a few times has solved all sorts of odd behavior on Win 8.x and Win 10 computers.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

It happens both with IE and FF and I do NOT have Fast Startup enabled.  I was trying to think back when this started but I can't seem to come up with any conflict due to some other software installed.  I may reinstall NS but I really don't want to unless it is absolutely necessary.  Thanks Imacri for all the help so far.  I will look a little deeper tomorrow morning.  Have a great night.

Re: Norton Security with Backup

since I did my tests with Chrome, tried both IE 11 and Edge. Both of these actually scan the exe and zip upon download completion. Norton did scan the exe on both explorers

Re: Norton Security with Backup

Well I'm most embarrassed but I found the problem...  I recently changed my download folder location and that folder was excluded from Scans and Download Intelligence detection in NS settings.  How stupid.  Anyway thanks to all for trying to help me out on this one and I apologize for wasting your time.  I'll try to do a more thorough investigation next time.
