Norton Security Deluxe

Can't install Norton Security Deluxe on computer with Windows XP, Norton support hasn't been able to install either. They have run Power Eraser, Removal and Reinstall etc. Before you say it I only use the XP for Pictures and a Weather program, cant put the weather program on Windows 10.

Re: Norton Security Deluxe

Hi not4norton:

Do you have the latest Win XP SP3 service pack, and do you see any warnings or errors messages during the installation process?  Is this the first time you have tried to install a Norton product on this computer, and has another antivirus program (e.g., McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG, etc.) ever been installed on this computer?

Win XP users can't install Norton v22.x products if they have an older CPU that does not support the SSE2 instruction set, but you should see the error messages described in the support article Message: "An unsupported processor has been detected. This version of the product requires a processor that supports the SSE2 instruction set…" appears when I install my Norton product during installation if your CPU is the issue.

FWIW, If you don't know how to find out whether or not you have the SSE2 instruction set which is one of sequence of sets that are around, I found the easy way to check is to download and run the free  Speccy tool -- click on the Piriform link in the left column which is the free version and not the free trial of the paid for version -- and after it has scanned your system check the entries under CPU where you should find your equivalent to this for my CPU on a Windows 7 system I built when 7 came out.

Instructions MMX (+), 3DNow! (+), SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4A, AMD 64, NX, VMX

Before this one I had built an XP one and had to check that for a much older CPU but did find it had SSE2

Speccy is so useful and easy to use that I find it invaluable and it covers an amazing range of data including internal temperatures etc .... as you can see one advantage is that you can copy/paste any of the information you can see.

Hi huwyngr:

Users can also publish a snapshot of their Speccy profile (File | Publish Profile) and then paste the URL in their post as instructed in the support article Publishing a Speccy Profile to the Web.  Here's a recent profile for my own Vista SP2 computer: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/dQrXRl8rARQ6IN2GZCEyK0G.

Regardless, users should always see the error message mentioned <here> if they try to install a Norton v22.x product on a machine with an older CPU that does not support the SSE2 instruction set.

TMI <g>

I'm not sure it is a good thing to provide "strangers" with all that detail of my system including which updates I have installed (therefore which I have not)?

The reason I mentioned it here was for people to know in advance rather than get an error message.

But regardless it is one useful tool .... as one has come to expect from Piriform.

Have you used any of their "Portable" tools? I've not so far.

Hi not4norton:

Just checking in.  Were you still having problems installing Norton Security on your Win XP computer?
