Norton Security File Cleanup

If I remember correctly File Cleanup used to have Internet Explorer History if you chose to run File Cleanup manually. Now when I run File Cleanup manually Internet Explorer History is missing. Is it supposed to be like that? I checked all of the settings in Norton Security to see if I could add it back to the manual File Cleanup but couldn't find anything. It still appears in the scheduled tasks.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

Go to Settings > Administrative Settings > Background Tasks > Configure.  It is still there where you can manually run it, or let it run automatically.

Or, on the Security tab of the main NS GUI > Run Scans > Custom Task > Go.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

Under Background Tasks "Ran During Idle" it says "No" how would I get it to run during idle? In fact all of the file cleanup selections say "No" for Ran During Idle. The only ones that say yes are LiveUpdate, Quick Scan and Insight but Insight says cancelled. For task scheduling where it appears it says Automatic (Recommended).

Found it under Custom Task. Apparently I forgot where it was.

Clicking the arrow on the left of each Task runs it too.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

But is there a way to make Internet Explorer Temporary Files, Windows Temporary Files and Internet Explorer History cleanup automatic while the computer is in idle? Like when Norton runs performance tasks during idle. Basically I'd like all of the Custom Tasks to run automatically during idle except for disk optimization.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

You can change the schedule, but that's about it as far as I know.

Settings > Task Scheduling > the Scheduling tab, change it to what you want.

That's all I know about the Tasks.

Cheers.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

I guess they don't run during idle. I can't find it anywhere. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

Hello SGFC

The Internet Temporary Files and Windows Temporary Files run as part of the Idle Full System Scan. So they do run when Idle. I have my Idle Full System Scan set to run weekly at a set time while I am sleeping. After your Idle Full System Scan runs, if you go to the History Logs, you can scroll down to Scan Reports and see the results of the Scans. If you scroll down further, you will find File Cleanup. Click on File Cleanup, you will see the results of each of the 2 File Cleanups.  The Internet History, I clean manually.

Thanks.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

Oh maybe that's why it doesn't show up under background tasks as "Ran during idle". Because Full System scan says "Ran during Idle - No".

When I check Scans and Risks, Full System Scan Configure [+] it is set to run every 30 days even when the computer isn't idle. Quick scan is not scheduled.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

Hello

I schedule my Idle Full System Scans to Run when Idle.

Settings>Antivirus>Scans and Risks>Full System Scan>Configure>Full System Scan>EDIT Scan>I picked weekly, then day and time of day, on bottom put an x in only at Idle Time. Then Task Scheduling>Automatic Tasks, X off the ones you want to run>Scheduling>pick same time as Idle Full System Scan>x off only at Idle Time, it's below the day and time part.

Actually, I have mine set for 15 minutes earlier than the Idle Full System Scan. So they run one after the other and all during Idle Time.

Thanks.

P.S. You can't schedule Quick Scans.   They run when ever there is an Antivirus Download.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

The task scheduling it set to automatic (recommended) it says it'll only run when idle.

So I guess the thing preventing the tasks from running is the full system scan during idle.

I run Full and Quick scan manually everyday. So maybe it's best that I run the cleaning manually too. Since I don't care for scheduled full system scans. Or well default every 30 days is fine for me.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

Hi, SGFC. Fwiw, I don't schedule any scans. I run the Full Scan weekly and manually, while I'm having lunch.

By the time I get back, its's done !

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

I don't schedule scans either. I think that 30 day full system scan is default.

Re: Norton Security File Cleanup

FWIW, Internet Explorer History is NOT enabled by Default under the Task Scheduling Setting.

Also, The full scan is run every 30 days at idle time and it can be resumed. The product tries to finish the full scan within one day after the due time (it still runs only at idle state of the system). However, this scan is a low-priority activity, which means that if the product is unable to complete the full scan in time (no idle state during that period), it will be dropped from the current schedule. The product will then run a Full Scan at its next schedule. If you want, you can change the schedule of Full Scan through the Custom Scan UI.
