Norton Security Slows Computer to almost a total stop

I have noticed a trend that started a few months ago that I am hoping someone can fix.  Once every month or so, my computer with Window's 7 goes from lightning fast to almost a complete stop. Literally every click takes seconds to initiate. The general solution is to restart the computer, then everything is fine again.  A few days will go by, then, the same problem again.  If I uninstall, then reinstall Norton, the probably then goes away for several weeks again, but eventually the cycle repeats itself.  I am at that juncture where it is time to reinstall Norton again.

Any ideas?

What may be happening here is that the background full system scan is not getting a chance to run. It is normally done when your system is idle, but if you do not let the system sit idle enough, eventually Norton will run the scan anyway. You could try disabling the automatic full system scan. Then you can run the full system scan when you will not be using your system.

Click on Settings - Anti Virus. Then click Scans and Risks tab, and then click on Configure beside Full System Scan. Then click on the pencil icon beside Full System Scan. Then choose the option Do not schedule this scan.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Hello

You can also schedule the time and day you want to schedule your scan. I do my scans weekly. I think that by doing them weekly, you end up having less files to scan every week. That will also make the scans take less time. I find it best to schedule the scan for when I am sleeping. The computer is most likely to be idle at that time also.

Thanks.

Thanks for the input everyone. I had assumed that the quickscan which runs regularly, would be sufficient.  I will try to run the full system scan each week.  We will see if that resolves the problem. Thanks again!

The quick scan is sufficient, and any other files that are not scanned by the quick scan will be scanned when they are accessed. You are still protected.
