Norton Security start menu

I've just recently upgraded from N360 to Norton Security. I uninstalled N360 using control panel and NRT, and then installed Norton Security. However, I've noticed that when I click on all programs on the start menu, it says N360. The drop down menu says Norton Security but the actual link to open the program says N360. The link, despite saying N360, opens up as Norton Security. Out of curiosity, I uninstalled NS and the same thing happened again. Any idea why this is the case? I know NS is working, so shouldn't be of any concern. Just curious to know if this has happened anyone else and if I can change it.

Re: Norton Security start menu

Are the All Programs N360 shortcuts still active.
Are there Norton Security shortcuts also...?

Re: Norton Security start menu

The N360 shortcut on all program opens up as NS. I have a NS shortcut on my desktop that was created on install. If I right on the N360 shortcut and choose create shortcut, it will come up as N360 but will open up as NS If that makes sense

Re: Norton Security start menu

The start up menu will say Norton Security, but the subsequent drop down shows N360, live update, uninstall N360, get support etc. (I believe).

Re: Norton Security start menu

Hmm, I'll offer you can re-name.

Lets hear from the Community, best way to sort.

Re: Norton Security start menu

How would I go about re-naming it? I tried to re-name it through the start menu, all programs list but it just deleted the link and left an empty menu saying 'Norton Security' where the N360 link used to be

Re: Norton Security start menu

YMMV, right click Rename works for me.   I can Rename the folder and/or shortcut.
Maybe, since items are already confused Rename is not working.  IDK

Unless, by Properties > Shortcut > Target.
What does Target show.  Does Target path make sense...?

Maybe, Community will suggest refresh install.....

Re: Norton Security start menu

I think this problem is caused by Windows. I can't remember if there's a cache file for "All Programs" if so deleting it might help.

Just to be clear is it under recently opened programs or all programs? If it is under recently opened programs you could clear that list that might solve the problem.

Also what operating system are you using? It might also help to uninstall through the control panel and then run NRT. Restart your computer using restart from the WIN X menu (press the Windows key + X), hover over sign out and shut down and click restart. Once you're at your desktop press the Windows key + R in the Run window type regedit and click OK. Then in hkey_local_machine/software and also hkey_current_user/software look for Norton and delete it. It might already be deleted by NRT. But it could've been left. Next download and install Norton Security http://www.norton.com/latestns

Re: Norton Security start menu

It is under All Programs. I'm on Windows 7 too.

Re: Norton Security start menu

Well I'd uninstall using the control panel then use NRT. Restart the computer. Then look for Norton in All Programs. If you see it right click it and delete it. That might help too. After that install Norton again.

Re: Norton Security start menu

That's the thing, once I've uninstalled it, Norton no longer appears under All Programs. It then reappears after installing but still as N360

Re: Norton Security start menu

I  feel the following may be worth a try:

Please open Run by pressing windows key + R -> devmgmt.msc -> View Show

Hidden devices -> open Non-Plug and Play Drivers-> Maximize the Screen

If you have Identity Safe data Export it ->

Go to Control panel uninstall NS ->select the second option to

completely uninstall ->restart -> Run Norton Removal Tool -> Restart ->

Go to the maximized page -> if you find   NAVENG, NAVEX15, Norton Antivirus settings manager, starting from Symantec

Data Store to SymEvent (entries starting with Sym)  ->right click on them

click uninstall -> For the Restart prompts select no -> Goto Program files

if you find Norton Folder delete it -> Go to Run ->type temp ->Delete all

the files in there -> Run -> %temp% ->delete all ->Now Restart the PC -

>Install Norton Security ->Run Live Update until you get no updates found

message ->restart PC

Let us know how it went for you.

Re: Norton Security start menu

Thanks for the suggestions. Can any one think of a less technical way of sorting it? Just I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable doing Yank's suggestion. It'll be Thursday before I'll have the time to sit down and go through the process anyway.

Re: Norton Security start menu

hi Waller92

Whilst I am not able to give a reason or a way to solve this problem I too saw this a few months ago when installing Norton Security with Backup having previously had Norton 360 installed.

For some time after installing NSwB I would see in the list of programs in the Windows Start menu that N360 was installed, I think it also showed as such in the list of programs in the "Uninstall a Program" window.

I don't know how long this lasted nor do I know how it changed but now NSwB is listed instead of N360, I did nothing to change the situation as I did not notice when it changed I don't know if Windows eventually recognised the correct program or an update from Norton or Windows solved the problem.

Having the "incorrect" program name appeared not to affect the program functions everything worked as normal.

Re: Norton Security start menu

Hi Michael Just to clarify, N360 appeared in all programs (start menu) rather than NSwB? Do you remember if clicking on the N360 shortcut opened up NSwB? It seems strange to me that all the folders on my computer say Norton Security but that is the only reference to N360. Clicking on 'open file location' sends me to the NS shortcut in the Norton Engine folder too. I'll give it a few days and hopefully, like yours, it will correct itself.

Re: Norton Security start menu

hi Waller92

Yes in the all programs of the Start Menu Norton was listed as N360 which when clicked would open NSwB.

I'm afraid I don't now remember all the details, I too thought it was strange but in the first instance put it down to a minor programming slip.

Re: Norton Security start menu

After installing NS on my parents' laptop (after doing the same process as I did on mine), I've noticed that the same thing has happened on theirs too. Norton Security appearing as N360 under all programs menu.

Re: Norton Security start menu

What security software did your parents have before you installed this new product?

Also what edition of Norton Security are you installing? Deluxe or Premium? If you're installing Premium there's a reason why it might say N360. Because Norton Security Premium is the new N360. If that's the case Symantec would still need to address the naming issue so it'd say Norton Security instead of N360.

Re: Norton Security start menu

They had N360 too. We've got up to 5 devices available to use so I believe that is NS deluxe (unless I'm mistaken).

Re: Norton Security start menu

Yes 5 is Deluxe. So there goes that theory :/

Re: Norton Security start menu

I'll see if updating to the latest version tomorrow will fix it.
