Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

Hi Everyone,

A few days ago I installed Firefox Beta 57.0b14 and I found that Norton Security Toolbar is disabled by default.

Any ideas as to if Norton is working on to make Security Toolbar compatible with Firefox(starting version 57)?

Hello. Remove your extension and ALL its settings, cookies, cache. Reboot and reinstall the extension. Norton extension is compatible with the following per the article below:

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

There are changes in FF 57 that need to have all extensions re written to work. The current versions have not yet been updated for the changes in FF 57.

When FF 57 is officially released to the public, Norton should have the extensions ready.

Norton cannot guarantee and compatibility, if you are using beta products.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

I use FF 57.0b14 and the Toolbar functions have been moved.

New Web-extensions for ID Safe and Safe Web are available and you can use Norton Safe Search as your search engine.

On FF toolbar the 1st Icon is ID Safe and the Green Square is Safe Web status for the present site.

If you open the Safe Web status it will give you the Safe Search option and ignores your default search engine.

It looks that way. I don't think the Toolbar is coming back. But I don't know what Norton is thinking.

IMO  The toolbar will come back. It was the least troublesome extension Norton has. It just has not been released yet as Mozilla has not yet released V57, According to this Mozilla Wiki, it is not released until November  14.

Let's see what happens.

Hi PhoneMan,

I just installed the Norton Safe Web and Norton Identity Safe. You are right Toolbar functions have been removed.

There is something I would like to say the owner of these extenions is DL-ENG-MAC-BFW, why not Symantec or Norton. I want to be sure if this DL-ENG-MAC-BFW is the legit one.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

Just get latest update for NS (22.11.2.7) and lost Norton Toolbar. It seemed that only Safe Web protects me now in the Internet. However I don't see now any reputation icon in Google search. Also I don't like that I can't hide Safe Web icon in Firefox and don't lose my protection. Hope that toolbar will back soon beacause this "extension" is just horrible.

UPD. Checked this extension on fishtank and didn't see any blocks from Norton. ~20 differnt sites and no blocks? What Symantec will answer on that??

Hi Sunil_GA:

Could you please clarify what this means for Win XP and Vista users who currently use Firefox ESR v52.x (extended support release)?  Mozilla has announced that Firefox ESR v52.x will be fully supported on these older platforms until June 2018 (i.e., when FF v52.8.0 is released on 08-May-2018) - see the 04-Oct-2017 official announcement Update on Firefox support for Windows XP and Vista.

The Norton support article Cannot find the Norton Security Toolbar in Mozilla Firefox you provided a link for incorrectly states the following:

Windows XP and Windows Vista users can install only the Norton Safe Web extension after updating to Mozilla Firefox version 57. For more information, read Firefox is ending support for Windows XP and Vista.

Mozilla automatically switched all Win XP and Vista users from Firefox to Firefox ESR in March 2017 and users with these older platforms have not been able to install the "regular" desktop version of Firefox since FF v53 was released - see the ghacks.net article Firefox 53: no support for Windows XP or Vista.  The information in the Mozilla support article Firefox is ending support for Windows XP and Vista referenced in that Norton support article is several months out-of-date and makes no mention of the fact that FF ESR v52.x will be supported on Win XP and Vista until June 2018.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

I have my Norton local password vault (no cloud vault fan, so far). I very much prefer to use Google search and I don’t like using Norton Safe Search. I am still on FF 56.0.2.  And I completely lost Norton Toolbar right after updating to NSBU version 22.11.2.7. What I am trying to say is I feel lost!...

Any help, please, on how I can make up for the loss of NTB and still keep my good old vice of choosing and picking my good old ways of trying to keep safe while going around the net?

Thanks in advance for all help and advice.

Yep, not a fan that there are no reputations icons in Google searches.

Updated to the new version of Norton Security today.  The Norton safe web icons are working on searches in Internet Explorer and Chrome.  Running FireFox 56.0.2 and had to install the new Norton Safe Web 2.3.0.34 as the toolbar was gone.  Now the icons are gone in Google searches.  The Firefox extension does not work as well as in Internet Explorer or Chrome

FF, Edge,Chrome and Vivaldi have all gone to Web Extensions with online Vault only. IE still has the Toolbar and Local Vault. I went to the Dark side and use an online Vault and like the new FF and learning Vivaldi as it supports the same ID Safe extension.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

Symantec should do like Kaspersky and Bitdefender. Create web protection without any extension. I remember KIS in 2013 or earlier and it has 5 (!) different extension in each browser, now it has only 1 and it is not web protection (it relates to tracking protection and virtual keyboard).

Looks like you can no longer use the local vault if you want to use Firefox browser. I use Chrome, and as long as you can keep the older ID Safe extension, ver 1.0.5, you can still use the local vault.

Unfortunately, it looks like Norton is working to block all avenues to our local vaults.

This new extension works so/so on Firefox 56.0.2 I can't wait for Firefox 57.0

I'm glad Symantec separated the browser protection features. As I don't use Safe Search or Identity Safe. All I need is the Safe Web feature and it seems to be working kind of already.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

Thanks to those who cared to provide their input. But I'm still quite confused.

In one of my pc's I lost my Norton toolbar and the Norton safety icons in FF. This one pc runs on WIndows 10 Pro, version 1607.

In another pc, running on WIndows 10 Home, version 1703, I still have my Norton toolbar and safety icons as if nothing had happened in the other one.

Firefox runs on version 56.0.2 in both computers. And, of course, Internet Explorer keeps flying with high colors in both of them...

What's going on?

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

After the program update I installed the new Safe Web extension on my Firefox 56.0.2, and I see the green square icon with a checkmark in the top right corner. However, when I click on the green square to check the current page rating, I only get a blank white square popup. I don't get the Norton Rating info like the screen image that PhoneMan posted above.

Is it because I'm still using Firefox 56.0.2 so I'll have to wait on Firefox 57 for that functionality? i.e., is it only partly functional in 56.0.2?  Or should users of Firefox 56.0.2 also see something other than a white box, i.e.,  should there be a site rating in that popup box?

And is it functional in the sense that it will alert me if I encounter a malicious site, or am I not completely protected until I upgrade to Firefox 57?

Thanks.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

At this point, I must retract somewhat from my initial disappointment. The whole thing turns out to be much less of a setback for me as it seemed. All in all, the only thing missing is the toolbar and the ability it provided to access my local Vault for password checking. I have been relying much more on IE's Vault capabilities and won't be missing much the toolbar in FF.

And still, as a consolation prize, I got the faster and better looking UI of FF's version 57. Not too bad, after everything being considered.

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

So the only way to see Reputation Icons is if you install Norton Safe Search? I can't use Google search anymore and see if a site is safe?

Also when I open Firefox 57.0 my homepage is displayed but most of the time the Safe Web icon is grey with a question mark. But if I go to other pages it shows a green check mark. Or if I go back to my homepage it shows a green check mark after clicking Home. Shouldn't it be a green check mark when I open Firefox?

Hi SGFC:

Norton Safe Search is built in to the new Norton Safe Web v2.3.0.24 extension for Firefox.

I can't use Google search anymore and see if a site is safe?

That is correct. Symantec employee Matt Powers has confirmed <here> that site rating icons will only be displayed in search results if you use Norton Safe Search.

Also when I open Firefox 57.0 my homepage is displayed but most of the time the Safe Web icon is grey with a question mark. But if I go to other pages it shows a green check mark.

Hi SGFC:

After a bit more testing I don't think the problem is specific to the URL of my home page.  Norton Safe Web v2.3.0.24 always displays a grey icon with a question mark for any URL when my Firefox ESR browser is initially launched.

For example, here's what I see if I receive an automated e-mail notification from the Norton Community and click on the hyperlink in the e-mail to launch Firefox and browse directly to the thread I'm following:

Note: I will see the correct green icon if Firefox is already running and the hyperlink in my e-mail notification simply opens a new tab and browses to the Norton forum.

Missing Reputation Icons in Google searches. This is surely a backward step, only way to get rating apparently is to open searched web page - what happens when there is a site that had the old RED rating icon - is the page blocked from opening ? With the reputation icons there, you knew from search results to steer clear of these sites

Re: Norton Security Toolbar as Legacy Extension in Firefox

Used to work prior to 22.12.2.7. It works with Norton's own Safe Search - why not with other search engines, I would have thought principles to be the same. Been issues on & off with Norton/Firefox for a good couple of years now, this one with Reputation icons in Firefox been here before. Looks as though we are being guided towards Norton Safe Search, pity it is not a patch on Google & others, just a very basic limited search engine.

Count me in as someone not impressed with the lack of safe search icons in a Google search when using FF57.

I've counted on this feature for years and I will not be using Ask.com as an alternative.

This seems like a "forced" move to use Norton Safe search rather than provide safe search icon functionality in Google.

Considering alternatives...
