Norton Security won't do a full system scan anymore

My Norton Security is set to do a full system scan once a week. It usually scans about 1.3M files and finds about 40-50 cookies it needs to address. Today I noticed it didn't look right. When I went into History I saw that it worked as usual every week until Oct 7th. Then it only shows about 1 million files scanned and no files listed as needing attention. On Oct 14th it apparently didn't run.

Today I tried to manually run a full scan and it would run for about 2-3 minutes (2-3,000 files) then close the program. Looking in history doesn't even show that it started to run.

Running on a Dell desktop with WIN10 upgraded fro WIN7 several months ago.

I am now concerned whether it is really protecting the computer at all

Re: Norton Security won't do a full system scan anymore

I wonder if you might be having the same issue as me - see this thread:

If Norton Security crashes during a Full System Scan then there does not seem to be an entry in the history.

Can you see whether Norton Security (ns.exe) crashed, and if so in which module (name & version) and with what Exception Code? (in Windows 7 I can get this information from the Action Center, I don't know about Windows 10).

Re: Norton Security won't do a full system scan anymore

Hi,dresdenron. It's possible Norton may have been corrupted during the upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10.

Win 10 needs to be completely restarted for Norton and other programs to correctly operate.

It may also be worth using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool to give you a fresh copy.

If used, after the reinstall, run Live Update manually until no more are found restarting where requested, and then restart again.

Let us know how you go.

Re: Norton Security won't do a full system scan anymore

I had the same problem with a Full System Scan about a week ago. I am running a DELL XPS-8100 which was upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro. I have never had a problem completing a full system scan until I tried on 10/13/2017. Today I tried to scan again, and again it failed to complete the scan, and My Norton icon disappeared from the task bar as it did on the 13th. My Quick scans didn't seem to be affected.

I uninstalled and reinstalled my Norton Security with backup (v22.11.0.41) today and restarted and ran a LiveUpdate, which was fairly large. Upon another restart, I ran and completed a Full System scan.

Scan History: 1,391,946 files scanned with No Security risks detected.

dresdenron, I hope this solution works as well for you as it did for me.

Re: Norton Security won't do a full system scan anymore

Hi nychucky,

I am a "Me too".

Yesterday (Oct 17), after reading your comment, I tried again to update LiveUpdate and run a full system scan.  This time it worked! Norton did not crash, and the scan was completed normally.

Thank you for advising that the problema was solved!

Perhaps you could get more information on the following thread:

Re: Norton Security won't do a full system scan anymore

I didn't have to do any uninstalls and reinstalls. Norton apparently fixed their problem and after running Live Update today I tried Full System Scan and it worked as it is supposed to.
