Norton toolbar and toolbar add-ins missing in IE10 on new Win 8 machine

I just bought my first Windows 8 laptop and in trying to set up Identity Safe, was stymied because the Norton toolbar is not available on IE10 that came pre-installed.  So I went to the Manage Add-ons page to enable it, and it wasn't listed at all, not even as "disabled".  I called Norton Support, and they were unable to help me, although at first they claimed the toolbar was incompatible with IE10.  When I pointed out that the toolbar was working just fine on my Windows 7 machine, they were stumped.  In spite of nearly an hour on the phone, I finally had to resort to using Firefox, where the toolbar works fine.

Anyone else notice this?  The new laptop is a Toshiba Satellite with Core i7.

Hi dickamm,

Are you in desktop mode?  The NTB is disabled in Metro mode - per Microsoft's request.

No, I'm not in desktop mode, and don't know how to get there.  Sounds like a great idea since I'm not enamored of the Metro interface anyway, being a keyboard/mouse kind of person, and not having a touch screen.  How does one enter "desktop mode"?

Hopefully a Win 8 user will come along and be able to give you exact instuctions - I know nothing about win 8 - excpet for some tidbits concerning Norton.

"Manage Add-ons" is only available in the IE Desktop browser - the Metro (Start Screen) IE browser does not have it.  However the desktop browser is also running in 64Bit mode if the EPM option has been enabled (in Advanced Internet Options) which is a 'no-no' for the Norton plugins ...

Unchecking the EPM option will restore the desktop browser to 32Bit operation mode (after a system restart), which will then allow the Norton add-ons to function.

Kind Regards,

John

Hi Dickamm,

Did you buy Windows8 with NIS Pre installed? If yes, Toolbar will not be displayed in IE10, but toolbar functionality will work as it should.

Microsoft request us to keep  Norton toolbar in hidden mode on their browser(IE10).

Please see more information from this thread

Thanks,

Quick question Senthil -

Is this (supposed to) always be the case for all OEM preinstalled/bundled NIS?  I only ask because the OP cited that they have a Toshiba Satellite NB.  I've now set up a number of new Win-8 based HP systems (NBs, UBs, and DTs) for clients which came with preloaded NIS2013 and so far I've yet to come across one that has the NTB hidden in the IE10 Desktop browser.  On my own HP NB (about six months old) there was a problem with its pre-installed NIS2013 (last fall's) version that caused the NTB not to show on subsequently opened tabs in IE10, but that was corrected some time ago by a NIS version update.

Just curious -

Kind Regards,

John

Hi John,

I checked it in latest version of NIS OEM layout with WIn8 OS, Toolbar is not  displayed.

Regards,

Senthil.
