Norton Toolbar Disables Xfinity Recording Playback - Firefox

Many months age when Symantec released the limited toolbar for Firefox I noticed a loss of the ability of playing back Comcast X1 recordings on my PC (it worked in Chrome) but I never associated this with the problem.   It took a lot of testing but this appears to be the reason.  I did a clean install of Firefox 64bit (after removing the Mozilla folder from appdata/roaming.  After the install I went to the Xfinity page and attempted to play a recording.  It worked!!  I then enabled the Comcast Norton Security Suite which installs the Norton toolbar.  After doing this the playback of recordings did not work any more.  I then disabled the Norton toolbar but the X1 recording still did not play.  It appears the Comcast Norton Security Suite interferes with the playback of recordings in Firefox 64 bit and once activated it permanently disables playback of X1 recordings.  This could not be a firewall issue since X1 recordings play in Chrome on the same computer.  I hope the August update to the toolbar from Symantec corrects this issue!  Below is the error message I get on attempted playback:

Can you tell us if you have any other extensions installed in FF and what they are?

Thanks.

When I did the reinstall of Firefox the only extension was the Norton Toolbar.  The only plug-in was the Flash Player.

OK, there goes that idea.

Thanks.

Hi PaulGo,

I am not familiar with X1, but there is a Board on Comcast Forums you can try to get an answer from:

Re: Norton Toolbar Disables Xfinity Recording Playback - Firefox

It's not an X1 application issue since they are sending a protected video stream that is being shown by the Adobe Flash Player. In fact it works and displays correctly with the Chrome and IE browsers.  The problem only occurs when the Norton toolbar is activated on the Firefox browser,  So I have to assume the Norton software is altering settings within the Firefox browser that prohibits playback of recorded material that resides in the cloud.  Viewing live TV and VOD content via Firefox works, only recorded content becomes disabled.

Have you tried a 32 bit version of Firefox?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Toolbar Disables Xfinity Recording Playback - Firefox

I just tried the 32bit version of Firefox and it works with the Xfinity cloud recordings.  So I assume there is something in the current version of the Norton toolbar that is not compatible with the 64bit version of Firefox.  Hopefully the system software engineers at Symantec will resolve this problem when they release the new version of the toolbar in August.  If you can please make them aware of the problem.

I'm not sure that the Firefox 64 bit version is supported yet by Norton. I think @Krusty13 might be able to help with this question.

With my privacy settings (Always use private browsing mode) the toolbar does not show up at all, which I believe is the case with the 32-bit version also.  That said, the SafeWeb annotations do show up in Google searches and phishing protection and Download Insight do work in the 64-bit version.

Re: Norton Toolbar Disables Xfinity Recording Playback - Firefox

If I go into the private window mode using Firefox 64bit the toolbar still shows up.  The main question is I assume the toolbar is compatible with Firefox 64bit since it seems to function.  However there appears to be a conflict with the toolbar and displaying recorded protected Adobe flash content from Xfinity (all other flash content seems to work).  I hope this is corrected in the

August toolbar release.
