Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

I've got a strange problem with the Norton Toolbar in Firefox.

basically, the toolbar appears but I can't do anything with it. When I click on the three little dots for example (which should display the toolbar settings menu) nothing happens.

I've tried completely uninstalling both Firefox and Norton Internet Security and re-installing them but the result is the same.

Using Windows 7 by the way. Anyone seen this / know how to fix it?

I don't know what your point is.

If you're trying to point out that it has "limited functionality", I know that. My problem is that it has no functionality.

It works on my Windows XP PC, it works on my Windows 10 PC, but not on my Windows 7 PC.

I don't think it's a Windows 7 problem either, because it works on my parents' PC which is running Windows 7.

I've read reports that Private Window and / or NoScript degrade current Toolbar.

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

If by "Private Window" you mean the private browsing mode option in Firefox, then yes, selecting that option does completely stop the Norton toolbar from being displayed. That's not the problem. The toolbar is displayed, it just doesn't do anything.

I don't know what NoScript is.

The point is, I don't see anything in my Firefox which refers to noscript.

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

You should be able to check if you have NoScript by using the Tools > Addons menu in Firefox. Under the Extensions tab at the left hand side there would be an entry for NoScript in addition to the entry for Norton Identity Safe.

If you do have NoScript then this thread may be useful (your problem symptoms appear to be similar):

You could try the workaround (open a second Firefox window and then close the first window) to see if it works for you (it might be preferable to disabling NoScript if you have it).

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

Like I said earlier, I do not have any entries for NoScript in my Firefox Addons/extensions.

You are correct though that the symptoms are identical, even the opening a second Firefox window does the trick, so if I don't have NoScript, what else could be causing it?

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

It is very interesting that you are getting the same symptoms and the opening a second window workaround also works for you but you don't use NoScript.

I think that the bottom line is that there are problems with the current Norton Toolbar and we need to put pressure on Norton to fix them - note that there hasn't been an official response from Norton so far to the thread I started about my problem.

It could be useful to know whether you also see any errors relating to nortonidentitysafeaddon if you look at the Firefox Browser Console (Tools > Web Developer > Browser Console) when you open the first Firefox window.

I see two instances of the following error message:

nortonidentitysafeaddon : TypeError: can't convert null to object
(followed by a long stack trace)

Do you have other addons/extensions enabled apart from Norton Identity Safe?
If so it might be worth trying disabling each in turn to see if the problem goes away.

In the meantime I guess you can use the second window workaround like I am.

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

Ok, I think I've got it:

RealTimes Downloader Plugin

Disabling that plugin fixes it. Also, with the plugin enabled I do get the same type of errors in the browser console as you describe, so it must be screwing up the Norton Toolbar in the same way as your NoScript extension does.

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

I think that this is further evidence that Norton need to investigate and fix this problem with the Norton Toolbar.

- The problem arises with more than one addon (not just NoScript).

- The errors logged in the browser console are associated with nortonidentitysafeaddon (not another addon).

Re: Norton toolbar doesn't work in Firefox

It is still a work in progress of course. I'm currently using Internet Explorer as my main browser since we are still waiting for the password vault to be re-implemented in the Norton Identity Safe toolbar for Firefox but let's hope they will look into this issue.
