Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

Is there a fix available yet?  If not, when is it likely to be available?

hi DMooney

You may wish to have a look at the Norton announcement which can be found in the thread linked below:

Unfortunately I feel Symantec really screwed up here. There is no reason in the world that this issue should even be here. Wait till the end of October, still may not be complete for some time. C'mon!

Version 4.1 has been in beta for a couple of months now so this issue should have been addressed already in time for final release. Very disappointed in Symantec at the moment. Get with the program!

No, Symantec hasn't screwed up. Mozilla keep changing the rules. Not to mention releasing a new version every six weeks.......

Personally I found Firefox were always very unreliable. Probably why, as 'F4E' says, Mozilla are forever updating! Understand Symantec frustration given the ‘binary XPCOM’ Mozilla technology is no longer available to them.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

Maybe it is time for me to try some different browsers to see what would work for me. I definitely need something that will use a good popup blocker. Not so worried about ad blockers though. I have several on hand (over 20) but found that FF worked great for me over IE. Not a fan of Edge, maybe Opera.

Thanks all for the pointers.

I read that post long before posting my question.  That post is getting pretty stale.  Is there not something to say as an update?

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

Not sure what kind of update you are looking for. From the product announcement linked to above,

"We estimate to have a new toolbar available around the end of October 2015 focusing on web protection features like Norton Safe Web. We expect to restore the remaining toolbar functionality at a later release."

Maybe you can ask your question again at the end of the month.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

I actually require identity safe which is my priority. That is why I am still running v40.03. By the end of the month they will probably be at v42.0 (v42.0 beta 5) is latest.

Remaining toolbar functionality will be how much further?

Hello Kim

We have no further timeline available to us except what Peterweb posted. I'm sure they are trying to get things done as quickly as possible and have functionality back as quick as possible. They know everyone wants to have a fully working Toolbar.

Thanks.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

Hello

All I know is that they are working on some sort of announcement. I can tell you this. Norton will never post a date for the release of something new until it has been released. Even we as Gurus don't get the advanced notice. Norton does know from me that there are a lot of users waiting for that toolbar to make an appearance. I hope you all realize that this will be a partially functional toolbar. Not everything will be done on it yet. This will be phase 1 with more phases to come at a later time.

Thanks.

Just to pass an interesting fact on.  There are times (such as this time) that we as Guru's and all other users know that an update is coming to make a portion of the Norton Toolbar extension and eventually the entire NTB functional with FF 41.  What we all don't know is when, thus users are complaining about the admins not providing an exact date.  They are not hiding anything from anyone - they really do not have an exact date, as a matter of fact (this is the interesting fact I eluded to), most times the update is released, users spot the update, and question it and Guru's provide the info to the admins and usually that is the first the admins know that the update has been released.

I know return you to normal programming.

So what does this tell me?

First of all, any major developer taking over a month, let alone the fact that beta's were out (this should have been addressed before final release) to give us no completion date, and then tell us it will still be incomplete is utter nonsense. I have been using Norton products since back in the dos days, "Norton Commander" as an example; Symantec is just unbelievable in their processes. How many were fired for screwing up web security keys?

Honestly, after being a loyal customer for well over 20 years, this issue along with several others in the past 2 years has now put me to the point whereas it may be time to change my security after my expiration of my subscription which unfortunately I still have 459 days remaining. First thing on my list would be to find a pw manager as this is all I really require of the toolbar.

I feel for the guru's on this site as I understand quite well your position. You are the ones taking the blame even though it is beyond your control. Maybe losing long time customers will awaken this sleepy giant. Yes, it has really come down to this. Try and tell a programmer it takes months to complete a simple thing as a toolbar. Ya right!

I am one who is holding off to update to ff 41, but noticed today that the identity safe didn't log me into a site that it always had before and I login to it a lot...??  Does that possibly mean they are working on it for the "fix"?  Or do they have a "fix" ready?  Does anyone know?

Thanks a lot....

Where is the toolbar?  I ran LiveUpdate a few minutes ago for this new Norton Tool Bar, but it is not present.  "Patch Installed Successfully", but then this toolbar is not present.  No listing in Add-ons, and no appearance in the Firefox browser.  This is the opposite of progress.

Hello g_cafe_c

Please try this workaround some users have said works to fix your issue.

Try opening up a 2nd tab in Firefox and see if the Toolbar is there. If it is there, then close the first tab.

Thanks.

As  I said, the norton tool bar  IS NOT LISTED in the Add-ons tab.  This is AFTER running LiveUpdate, letting Firefox restart, and also making a computer Restart.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

One may as well update their Firefox to the latest version.  As seen in my attempts up to now, the new norton tool bar will not be present after LiveUpdating Norton 360 to include the "installation" of the new Norton Toolbar.  Updating Firefox could not make anything worse.

(Currently just tried the LiveUpdate for norton tool bar on machine having Windows Vista, Firefox v40.0.3, Norton 360 v22.5.4)

Well, when I started my ff this AM, it opened with a tab to update the toolbar, so I did it, BUT....., it DOES NOT HAVE THE IDENTITY SAFE ON IT!!! So, now, I want to un-update it, in other words, go back to the toolbar version that HAS THE IDENTITY SAFE. Can anyone help me, let me know how to do this? Please?..... Thank you

Latest v22.5.4 Toolbar/Identity Safe patch delivered via LiveUpdate supports FF41 & FF42.
LiveUpdates within same major version e.g., v22 are automatic not granular.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

The point this poster was trying to make is that although the toolbar is showing up again, it does not include identity safe and does not insert usernames/passwords. This is what I am experiencing, too. We've waited a very long time for this, and it's very disappointing that the main function that many of use the toolbar for is not there. Honestly, I think we should all get a rebate or credit to make up for the more than a month we've been without full functionality. Like THAT's going to happen.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

I agree with you 100%. I am seriously considering finding an alternative after my subscription expires. Symantec has really let me down on this, now over a month later, and we get a useless toolbar as I require identity safe, so now I have a useless toolbar in ff. How much longer for a proper toolbar, who knows. I am also requesting a credit of at-least 2 more months just because of all the frustration this has caused. We leave it in Symantec hands at this point if they want us to remain customers.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

OK, so running 2 laptops...1 is Windows 8.1 & the other is Windows 7.  Running Norton Internet Security w/Backup ver. 22.5.4.24 & FireFox ver. 41 on both machines (ie - haven't upgraded to FF ver. 42 yet...holding off until the issues have been resolved w/NIS...).  Got the Norton ToolBar back on the Win8 machine, but no matter what I do on the Win7 machine, can not get the NTB.  I have tried rebooting pc, shutting off pc many, many times...no joy.  I have tried opening a 2nd FF browser window with the 1st window still up...no joy.

Any thoughts?

PLEASE..... tell me that you have the final "fix"; to include the Identity Safe....please let me know where you are at with this, Norton.  I need the Identity Safe BADLY.  I depend on it, and it is the only User Name/Password fill in that I trust!

Please let me know some information.......it's driving me nuts!

Hello Susie

I will see if I can get some update about phase 2. That is mostly the ID Safe. You can get to your passwords and copy, paste them in the meantime. You can use Firefox ESR. The toolbar works with that version. You can use ID or Chrome also. The ID Safe works with them.

Thanks.

This response is so disappointing. After nearly two months of incomplete functionality, the best you can come up with is "try another browser"? I haven't seen a word of apology, or even acknowledgement of this really unacceptable situation. We're all paying full price for a product that's not working.

You have to remember that the price you pay is for the subscription to the malware detection features. The Toolbar is an added feature that is actually free if you do not already have a Norton Security product installed.

And this is an excuse! Let's see how many subscriptions fail to renew after this inconvenience. A few weeks, understandable, not a few months.

Again, would it have killed you to preface this with "We're sorry for the inconvenience"?  Also, it's news to me that the toolbar is a free add on. I pay for Norton 360 and it certainly wasn't broken down into components. I have been a Norton user for many, many years--the first product I used was Norton Utilities for DOS. But this is making me rethink my loyalty.

Hello

Please remember that we are users like you are. But as Gurus, we do have contact with some of the Norton Employees. We are Volunteers who do our best to help our fellow users. I would be glad to give you an expected date when this project will be  done, but unfortunately I don't have any information about that yet. I am trying to help you and the other users in all these threads about the Firefox Toolbar. I'm sorry if that isn't good enough for you and the others. I don't use Firefox, but yet I am trying to help you customers the best I can.. I am not looking for a job with Norton. I am too old to look for a job any more at my age or physical ability.

Thanks.

Another patch and still no Identity Safe? When are they going to fix this?

And really ISN'T my intention to be mean to the volunteers--sorry, floplot. But Norton should be speaking to this--not just in oracular announcements, but in the forums, where the customers are. This is terrible customer service.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

Just saw yesterday's update, which includes this:

Over the next several months, we plan to release the functionality of Identity Safe in phases. The first phase will focus on highest-use functionality, likely to be auto-filling your username and password in Firefox.  We need to rebuild secure access to your Vault data in Firefox in this phase, which will take time.  Later phases will introduce more user interface features and may gradually provide auto-capturing new logins and passwords, auto-filling web forms with other data in your Vault, and Fill Assistant. We will keep you updated on our progress, but will not be releasing significant functional updates before the end of the year.

Over the next several MONTHS?

What have they been doing for the PAST several months? They knew about the changes in FIrefox since, when, April? And they have done nothing about this?

Again, volunteers, I get that it isn't you. But Norton needs to hear that its customers do not find this acceptable.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

ladyangst....the writing is on the wall.  Based on the last data I saw, Firefox 41 only has about 7% of the web browser market (and all versions of Firefox has no more than 10% of market share).  Only a percentage of those users also use Norton.  Therefore only a small percentage of Norton users use Firefox as their main browser.  What does all that mean?  It's clear Norton has decided that upgrading it's product to fully work on Firefox (like it use to before Firefox changed their browser at version 41) is not a priority for them.  Whether we like it or not, Norton is going to put the the largest amount of it's resources on projects that affect the largest number of Norton users.  And the reality is, the percentage of Norton users who use Firefox as their main web browser is more than likely very small.  Therefore it's not surprising that an upgrade to Norton for Firefox that requires a significant amount of resources is going to take them quite a while.  Until more people start using Firefox or enough Norton users don't renew due to the loss of functionality in Firefox, I would highly doubt priorities will change.  I was a die-hard Firefox user.  I have forced myself to get use to using Chrome because of the loss of functionality in Firefox.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

Thanks, That is very reasonable response. I hadn't realized how much Firefox had slipped. That does help to put this into perspective.

Re: Norton Toolbar fix for Firefox 41

As per stat counter total firefox share is around 16.53% (with chrome at around 18% and internet explorer around 48.71%). Now if we know none of the computer geeks or enthusiasts would use internet explorer for obvious reasons so I believe that percentage of Norton users using IE would be very less. With this hypothesis we can say most of the norton users use either Chrome or Firefox with their shares being nearly equal. And that sure makes it important for Norton to keep Firefox users happy. (If Norton would have actually cared about their user base) So just saying that Norton could not make a toolbar available even after 7 months of prior notification is like saying okay we had a prior intel regarding a security breach but the percentage of people that could be affected was so low that we didn't care much. And it definitely doesn't work that way does it? I know we all are volunteers on this forum but this time Norton has really levelled down on it's trust level :/

Firefox function may be supplemented albeit temporary by.....

Use LastPass Free with Multifactor Authentication Free for Online Vault.
