Not able to scan or do Norton Insight on a file

I have three (3) computers running Windows 10, all of which are up-to-date with Microsoft, including the recent Windows 10 Spring release.  All are running Norton Security, version 22.14.0.54 under a 10 device license.

When I right-click on a file to do a scan or check the file’s Norton Insight status, I am presented with different options on the three computers.  One offers only “Add to Backup” or “Exclude from Backup”, i.e., no ability to scan the file or run Norton Insight.  The second offers those and the ability to scan the file.  The third includes the offers of the first two, and the offer to run Norton Insight.

Why the difference?  Is this related to the recent (early May, 2018) Windows 10 update?  How can I get the choices back on the computers which are missing them?

Thanks.

Re: Not able to scan or do Norton Insight on a file

Hi Thomas0,

Sounds like the same situation as described here:

The solution was posted in the following link:

Hopefully that will fix things up for you.

Re: Not able to scan or do Norton Insight on a file

yank,

Thanks.  I have read through many of the posts at the two links you sent.  I am not of a mind to do the uninstall and reinstall shtick.  Norton Insight is working on the computer with the most limited context-menu choices, and I have the option of scanning files by a more laborious route from within Norton Security.  Rather, I will wait for Norton to issue an update which corrects the problem.  I am surprised that it has not already happened.  That may speak to the difficulty imposed by Microsoft, with their April update, or Norton may not consider it to be a high priority.  Since I am generally satisfied with Norton Security, I will assume the former, and wait.

Hello

I believe that there was a Windows 10 update today 5/24 and I think there might have been a Norton update as well. Hope I am correct about this.

Have a Nice Day and

Thanks.

Re: Not able to scan or do Norton Insight on a file

I just found that I had this problem too.  First I tried NRnR.exe but still no right click context menu items, but my Program Files (x86) folder became hidden.  I then uninstalled Norton from Add / Remove Programs choosing NOT to save settings, restarted, ran NRnR.exe in Advanced Mode > Remove Only, then restarted again.  Finally I reinstalled using NSwB installer and my right click context menu items returned.

If anyone needs to unhide their Program Files (x86) folder run this in Admin Command Prompt:

attrib -h -s "%ProgramFiles(x86)%"

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Not able to scan or do Norton Insight on a file

floplot,

Thanks for the notice as I did not receive a regular notice from Microsoft about the update.  I did install the update (KB4100403) successfully, and ran Norton Security update.  I then rebooted the computer (cold reboot) all to no effect insofar as this problem is concerned, as of 9:07 am EDT.
