NPE no longers runs properly after reboot

I am running Windows 10 (64-bit). If I select the rootkit scan option in Norton Power Eraser, the program does not run properly after the computer reboots. I see an icon in the Taskbar, but the program will not display. The error in EventViewer is "The NPEService service is marked as an interactive service.  However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services.  This service may not function properly." Since this NPEService is not listed under Services, there is no way to grant interaction with the desktop. Any clues how to fix this?

Re: NPE no longers runs properly after reboot

Hi,drminer. There is no need to use the NPE tool, except in circumstances where a more aggressive tool is needed, and then only as a last resort.

Norton scans for rootkit during scans, as a matter of course.

Don't know how to fix.  I observe similar w W8.1 + built-in NPE.  << I see NPE Icon in the Taskbar, but the NPE user interface does not display.>>

With Rootkit Scan the XML Document reports -<Session0 ScanMode="Advanced"ScanType="System">
Without Rootkit Scan the XML Document reports -<Session0 ScanMode="Normal"ScanType="System">
After restart at desktop.  I'll observe hdd lite activity as if scan is running, all I see is NPE Taskbar Icon.  And Task Manager shows NPE as active, all I see is NPE Taskbar Icon.
Maybe, compare XML Documents w/wo Rootkit Scan.
Maybe, standalone NPE runs different.  ?

Re: NPE no longers runs properly after reboot

The reply that 'there is no need to run the Power Eraser Tool is not the answer.  The answer is to solve the issue with NPE not loading after restart to scan one's computer.

This tool is an option that a user has the right to use if so desires.  The mind set of 'Oh well, so what if it's broken.  You shouldn't be using it anyway.' is absolutely wrong.

I have the same issue.  Although I cannot install any Windows Updates either.  I don't know if these issues are related, but if I find a SOLUTION, I will post it here.

Re: NPE no longers runs properly after reboot

I stand by my previous comment. The NPE is a last resort tool so if it breaks your computer, then you'll have to resort to fixing what the NPE may break.

As you said, your choice.

That's great.  Stand by your previous comment.  The tool provided is a resource, even if it is a "last resort".  I have used it multiple times previously and have not encountered any issues at all.  NPE has never damaged or broke anything.  Since this is a tool to find issues that are hard to find, it is a valuable resource and should work properly if clients want to use their paid for tool, just like all the other tools provided.

What if something else doesn't work properly?  Do we just forget about and not use it, or find a solution?

I don't know if your post is to instigate a argument, but your contribution is unnecessary and serves no purpose in this forum except to take up space.

If anyone has any real help to this issue and question initially posted, please provide assistants.  The people that have this problem would greatly appreciate it.

Re: NPE no longers runs properly after reboot

My answer was to drminer, the OP. I said that there was no need to use the NPE to scan for rootkits, as Norton scans for them anyway in the Full Scan mode.

I'm not trying to start an argument. I merely stated what can happen if the NPE is used by someone who doesn't have your obvious knowledge.

This is the warning given by Symantec to users.

Power Eraser provides aggressive scanning and analysis to help resolve issues with heavily infected Windows computers. Because Power Eraser analysis is aggressive, it sometimes flags the critical files that you might need. Power Eraser can produce more false positives than virus and spyware scans.

Warning:

You should run Power Eraser only in emergency situations, such as when computers exhibit instability or have a persistent problem. Typically, you run Power Eraser on a single computer or small group of computers. You should not run other applications at the same time. In some cases, a regular scan event alerts you to run a Power Eraser analysis.
