NS Broke Down With Errors Not Fixable With Autofix - Uninstalled Now

I run a defrag every night when I go to sleep. When the defrag finishes my PC goes to sleep.

This morning when I woke up the defrag showed a successful completion BUT there was a red bannered NS warning window telling me that my NS has a problem that needed to be fixed and I should contact support. There was  a yellow click-on box to contact support. Everything about the window appeared to be totally legit BUT I tested and checked-out NS every way I know and nothing appeared to be wrong - until I tried to scan later. I hate dealing with any company's support. I later discovered that NS could not scan and got a similar red bannered window stating a problem exists in my NS that auto-fix could not fix.

All my settings were correct and green. I checked my firewall with Shields Up. Windows Action Center says NS is on. I ran a successful live update.

My History shows 5 Norton Error Reporting Submissions within two minutes around 4:54 AM. The last Error Report Submission was immediately followed by NS Blocking Two successive Unauthorized Access Blocked - (process data) -risk medium.

I suspect these were caused by my defrag program attempting to defrag or move a restricted and protected Norton File.

""Actor    C:\Windows\system32\WBEM\WMIPRVSE.EXE

Actor PID   4796

Target    C:\Program Files(x86) Norton Security/Engine\22.5.2.15 \NS.exe

Action  Access Process Data

Reaction  Unauthorized access blocked

ACTION  No actions available for this item"

Too busy to give detailed report now but briefly The Error Report Submissions - five within a one minute period were not proceeded by any particular event. The last reported event was a Windows update over an hour before. The Error Reports for these were all identical.

Error ID: (88995CBB-EF57-41A1-BE87-C9AC45000683F}

Error Class 0X4C743499

Program NS

Process ID

Thread ID Ox14DC

No Action Available for this item.

Three Hours Later an Auto Fix Attempt was Listed

Advanced Details

Error 3048.3

Error Class CO27B52C

No Actions Available for this Item."

All of this long before I discovered the error that prevented NS from scanning that produced a not fixable by auto fix error. When that happened I was just too disgusted and out of time to check the scan error detail-doh.

Just didn't want to deal with support - don't have all day - so I uninstalled NS which was dumb cuz now I won't know if a new install will develop the same issue.

Maybe further details later......I'm forgetting  about NS for a bit. I don't think the latest version is ready for prime time.

There must be something about Windows 10 that is giving security vendors many problems in introducing compatability fixes for their software ATM

I daily read NS, Wilders, Emisoft, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky Forums and everyone is having lots of issues ATM.

Re: NS Broke Down With Errors Not Fixable With Autofix - Uninstalled Now

Hello hok

Why do you defrag every night? With today's new hard drives, defrags aren't even necessary if you have SSD drives.. Did your scans start at all? Thanks.

EDIT: I have found that autofix never fixes anything..

The Community may be able to help you, but with  it uninstalled, it will be difficult to help you. Any program that gets close to Norton will produce the blockages that you saw. That is perfectly normal. The problem with scanning can usually be fixed with the help from some of the other helpers, but they will suggest things to try, but you won't be able to try what is suggested. Norton may want logs from you. The Admins try to help in here also now..

By defragging every day, you could be damaging your hard drives and that can cause the issue with not being able to scan.. Try a checkdisk and see if it finds anything and fixes any problems.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.17.3.50 Core Firmware 282 I E 11 Chrome latest version.

Hi hok,

Since you already have NS uninstalled and after reviewing your recent past situations, at this point I would suggest, running the Norton Removal Tool, and then going to your Norton Account and downloading a fresh install of NS. Older thread starting here may assist doing the install.

Of course that's just my opinion, others may have other ideas - but we need to start with a clean install.

Hi:-) I defrag every night cuz I'm an idiot :- ) I know that the speed of today's hard drives, even non SSDs , greatly lessens the need for defragging and many PC Pro repair guys and experienced PC users NEVER defrag HDDs .

I have always believed that defragging prolongs the life of your HDD - less head movement. But I also like, at least the theory behind System Mechanic's defragger layout scheme. Their Program Accelerator, rather than just defragging individual files or folders, allegedly also attempts to place next to/near each other files and folders that usually work together. IOLO claims by analogy that its like looking at a bunch of papers and files scattered all over your desk. Other defraggers will put the papers in the proper files but leave the files randomly scattered around your desk. But Program Accelerator allegedly puts all papers in the correct file and then arranges the files in a way that files that you frequently use together are placed together or as close to one another as possible,  Other popular layout scheme I never thought much of. I have done extensive testing and found that Program Accelerator Speeds Up my PC by at least .00045% :-)

I have had one hard drive failure during the past 20 years from too many reallocated sectors.

You are attempting to teach an Old Dog a new trick :-)

Dunno. Probably just was subject to too much old Diskeeper Propaganda (marketing material and comparative studies) years ago. As long as their propaganda did not prosthelytize Scientology, it was ok. (All managers and employees of Diskeeper were Members of Scientology - Not sure about their renamed company Conduit)- but as far as I'm concerned Diskeeper/Conduit has died a silent death. It causes too many issues with Windows 8, for me it always froze my PC when browsing, and many others reported similar issues on the Diskeeper forums. There has not been a new Diskeeper in over two years. There always used to be a new improved version every year,  and no plans for a future addition are in the works.)

BTW: No. The scan never started. Was admittedly a dumb move to uninstall w/o contacting support but I have an explosive personality and act accordingly.

At some point I will reinstall it. I always come back to The new Norton,as opposed to that old cumbersome program of yesteryear, I always do. It feels like home :-)

Hi yank:-)

I did that just three days ago. Last week I reported several bad issues with a new install of NS. On that install I had used the NRT but used my original downloader to install.

floplot had to educate me on the correct way to download a new version from My Account. That's how I installed this version that caused problems I had never experience before.

IMHO it appears all comes back to the  question do you currently have NS installed because of your previous post in this thread:

"so I uninstalled NS which was dumb cuz now I won't know if a new install will develop the same issue."

If you have uninstalled NS, then you need to run the NRT again (even though your ran it prior to the latest (3 days ago) uninstall!

Do you in fact have any Norton product currently installed?

Re: NS Broke Down With Errors Not Fixable With Autofix - Uninstalled Now

Hi Yank:-) No Norton Products currently installed. And that was dumb cuz now support won't get a chance to see what the issue was.

There is another thread here about a Red NS Sonar warning occurring after an update yesterday. It could be that Norton put out a bad update that affected some users in different negative ways, each type of which triggered a red warning. Dunno.

Now that I blew giving Norton a opportunity to see what my problem was I'm gonna wait a bit till NS settles down before reinstalling. As I said earlier, it seems that several well established and fine security vendors have been having many issues recently. I do believe it is making changes to accommodate Windows 10 that is causing security vendors to have issues.

Hi, hok. I hope you have a decent antivirus installed while you decide about NS. I hope it's not Microsoft Security Essentials !

LOL. I installed Kaspersky IS 2015. After a short time. I didn't feel comfy with it cuz of it's known recently exposed vulnerability to extremely dangerous exploits caused by how it scans https traffic. I used the KIS Remover. Destroyed my internet network connection. Was irreparable damage. I use a NETGEAR ROUTER and modem. NETGEAR has a special repair program called Genie. Neither it nor Windows could restore my internet connection. Thank Gawd for system restore :-) I always on occasion create and save a restore point with no A/v suite installed at the time. Some security suites prevent the creation of a successful restore point w/o disabling certain features.

I have licenses for several suites. I'm a sucker for  the occasional New Egg exceptionally irresistible NewEgg super-specials that appear every once in a while. You should get on their mailing list. (There's also a thread over at Wilders dedicated exclusively to the latest NewEgg specials, but that thread is exclusively devoted to security software. The New Egg Super specials in it's newsletter include all types of software and hardware.). Most of the New Egg Super Specials are pretty good but some are amazingly cheap for excellent suites.) I think my KIS 2015 was free after manufacturer's rebate. That's a pretty fair price for a suite that exposes you to some of the most dangerous recent exploits and totally borks your network when you uninstall it.:-)

Re: NS Broke Down With Errors Not Fixable With Autofix - Uninstalled Now

Hi, hok. That's interesting. For fun I recently road tested Bitdefender and Kaspersky 2015 internet security suites, first uninstalling Norton via Control Panel, and then using the Norton Removal Tool.

Both installed fine, and after the tests I uninstalled them using their dedicated removal tools, and then reinstalled NSBU with no issues.

I guess I was lucky............

 Hi, hok. ...

I guess I was lucky............

Nope. I was unlucky :-)

I have uninstalled KIS and several BD products previously and others recently and it never happened before, with two exceptions: 1.)The initial version of the latest incantation Of Zone Alarm IS Extreme, CheckPoint's flagship consumer product. early last year. Uninstalling it forced me to reformat my HD and do a clean Windows re-install. Was using a different PC then. It seemed to work fine on my PC, but I had several months remaining on the subscription to the product I was using at the time.  Zone Alarm made a few unexplained major changes to that program soon after it's release. I assume others may have had similar issues. 2.) A Webroot Product - It would not uninstall via Windows uninstaller. Webroot does not have a removal tool. Got help from their forum and got a solution, but it did no harm to my OS.

Uninstalling any Norton product with NRT was always fast, clean, and never caused an issue of any kind.
