NSWB - Automatic Backup

Hi,

Symantec/Norton Customer Support migrated my 3 year NIS subscription to NS Deluxe soon after which I upgraded to NSWB.or to be precise its latest avatar Norton Security Premium.

Now, I configured my backup set to backup to the secure cloud storage. I have the 'When' option set to automatic i.e. to run when the PC is idle.

However, I find the backup does not run when the PC is idle. This happens irrespective of whether a user is logged in (and screen locked, PC idle) or not. Running the backup task automatically works just fine.

I have about 22GB to backup and will need to leave the PC on overnight for several days (possibly a week) to get this much data backed up over an ADSL connection.

How can I get NSWB to backup my stuff automatically?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Viv

Re: NSWB - Automatic Backup

Hi VJM.

I am slightly confused as you say you have migrated to Norton Security Deluxe but my understanding is that Norton Security Deluxe does not come with backup capability.  I believe that it is only Norton Security Premium that has a backup capability and that comes with 25 GB of online storage.  Can you please confirm which product you actually have.

Next I am puzzled over exactly what the problem is (other than time to backup 22 GB) as in your third paragraph you say "Running the backup task automatically works just fine."  Well does it or does it not?

I would then comment that if you have 22 GB to backup then this is quite close to the 25 GB limit which you are likely to reach before too long.  So if I were you I would be thinking of how I could reduce the size of the backup or preparing to buy more storage.  An alternative which would be far faster would be to get a local backup drive and backup to that.

For the initial backup I would suggest that it is best to run it manually at a time that suits you, then if you wish you could turn it back to automatic for it to handle incremental changes.  Personally I like to stick to manual.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: NSWB - Automatic Backup

Hello Mike,

As mentioned in my post I currently use NSWB/Norton Security Premium, having upgraded to this product from NS Deluxe.

About the 3rd para, my bad, I meant to say manually, not automatically.

Yes I am close to the 25 GB limit and will probably have to upgrade my storage. I may choose to trim the list of files to save space.

As I type it's been set it to run manually. Unfortunately it starts from 0% every time I stop and start. I'd have thought it resumes from where it left off the last time it ran. But I do see some files backed up online, and according the application I have 23 GB free at this time.

Thing is, I have a Crashplan subscription & using Norton is an option. So far I am not entirely clued in to how NSWB works and the main issue is it does not start automatically even after the PC has been idle for hours. What is the idle timeout for backup to auto start/resume?

Any help appreciated.

Re: NSWB - Automatic Backup

Hi VJM.

I have to admit that I do not know how Norton works out when to start an auto backup.  I can guess but I do not know and as I said I choose to do my backups manually at a time of my choosing.

Given the amount that you have to back up I would recommend that you try a manual run over night and see if that makes reasonable progress but you will need to ensure that the power settings of your machine do not allow it to go to sleep as it may do so even though the backup is running (you will not be touching the keyboard or mouse).

I hope that helps a bit.

Good luck.

I'm almost sure it starts from the 0% of the remaining files... (not the total percentage of files being backed up).

Re: NSWB - Automatic Backup

Thanks Mike & tzon89. I'll probably choose to initiate the backup manually. Have already pushed a bit over 4GB to the online backup.

While NOBU is pretty good, It still doesn't match up to the likes of Crashplan when it comes to overall control and a 'set- it-&-forget-it' type of backup. Something for the Norton folks out here to think about adding in future versions.

Re: NSWB - Automatic Backup

You are welcome! Keep in mind that when automatic backup - or any other Norton task - launches, you don't see any window popping up. All automatic tasks run in the background. You might only see a small information window at the bottom right of your screen informing that Norton is performing tasks or that the tasks have been completed. To see if the task has run you should open Norton's History or check the task manager for any activity. I'm saying this in case you have misinterpreted seeing nothing on screen with no task being executed. Also, you can leave the setting to 'Automatic' and run the task manually whenever you wish.

Re: NSWB - Automatic Backup

Well, NSWB/NS Premium seems to be backing up automatically to the Cloud. All I did was to reconfigure the backup to manual (at a fixed time every day), once that task kicked in, cancelled it and set it back to automatic.
