OneTrust cookie banner pop up

I keep getting a OneTrust cookie banner pop up each time I input a search term into Norton Safe Search on Chrome. It pops up before I click on any of the search results. I've searched Norton website, Microsoft, and Google/Google Chrome for this cookie but with no success. A straight Google only results on multiple matches for onetrust.com. Can anyone tell me why I keep getting this cookie and is it anything to do with Norton? I'm using Norton 360 Deluxe with VPN on Windows 10.

FWIW ~ I'm not seeing banner with fresh Safe Search browser extension install + search "Norton" from Chrome address bar.   I'm not seeing banner with search "Norton" from https://search.norton.com/

Um, who's in 'List of Partners'....any sound familiar?
Does 'Manage Privacy' link offer hint?

Um, do you use any 'Sync and Google services'?

Um, and you don't know https://www.onetrust.com/ ?

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

Hi bjm - the banner only started appearing last week. I don't recognise any listed in 'List of Partners' and the Manage Privacy link only refers back to onetrust.com. I don't use any Sync and Google Services that I know of and I'd never heard of onetrust.com until this pop up appeared.  It's worrying as there's no obvious link back to any organisation that I know of.  I've gone through the cookies on Norton safe search and Chrome but just not able to track it down to either allow it or to block it.

Um, are you using Safe Search browser extension or Safe Search web page?

Maybe, run Malwarebytes scan.

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

The following are all showing as active: Norton Safe Search, Norton Safe Search as default for Chrome, and Norton Safe Web. The cookie banner is coming up on Norton Safe Search. I've checked the definitions of each. 'Safe Search' and 'Safe search as default for Chrome' look like they do the same job. I've disabled 'Norton Safe Search as default for Chrome' as Norton Safe Search looks to be the most recent extension. It's a good idea to run malware scan too to be on the safe side. Thanks for the links bjm.

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

Okay.  I only keep Norton Safe Web extension installed - enabled.  Norton Safe Web extension supports Search results annotation for Google/Yahoo/Bing on Chrome browser... so, I have no need for Norton Safe Search browser extension or Norton Safe Search web page.

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

I've been doing some experimentation. I've run malware progs and nothing bad detected. Have also confirmed that the banner only appears when either of Safe Search/safe Search for Chrome, or Safe Web is enabled. Have run LiveUpdate. The OneTrust privacy policy goes to an Ask Applications page - who manage browser extensions. Still cannot absolutely tie this banner down to Norton itself though - ie there's nothing in the banner, the Ask page or on Norton referring to a OneTrust-Norton/Symantec connection. I'd really like to know for sure rather than just assume because it only appears with Safe Search/Safe Web. Annoying.

Thanks for your help bjm.

Um, are you Signed In to Chrome?
Um, are you using Chrome Sync?

each time I input a search term into Norton Safe Search on Chrome.

Please clarify what search engine you're calling?

The OneTrust privacy policy goes to an Ask Applications page - who manage browser extensions.

Curious, what is the URL for the "Ask Applications page"?

Have also confirmed that the banner only appears when either of Safe Search/safe Search for Chrome, or Safe Web is enabled.

Okay, I created a new Chrome test profile and added Norton Safe Web & Norton Safe Search browser extensions.
So, Chrome test profile is at default settings with only Norton Safe Web & Norton Safe Search browser extensions.
Chrome test profile is not using Sync. I'm not seeing OneTrust cookie banner pop up.

search "Norton" with Norton Safe Search (browser extension) from Chrome address bar - search engine is Yahoo Search Powered by Bing
search "Norton" from Google.com search bar - search engine is Google
search "Norton" from Safe Search web page search bar - search engine is Norton Safe Search • © 2020 Ask Applications

Um, have you run Chrome Clean up?

Sorry, I don't know how to reproduce banner (from opening post), my side.

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

I don't sign in to Chrome or use Chrome Sync. The Ask Applications page is https://eula.askapplications.com/privacypolicy/

I've also discovered that the Safe Search query URL is:  https://nortonsafe.search.ask.com/web?omnisearch=yes&q=%s.

So maybe that's the clue - askapplications.com and nortonsafe.search.ask.com.

Thank you so much for your time on this - I see the copyright is 2020 Ask Applications also.

Yes, this is a webpage - this is not Norton Safe Search browser extension.

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

Ah right - so having run malware progs/clean ups and given the 'Ask' privacy policy on the cookie popup and ask.com in the webpage, is all leading me to think that the cookie banner is legit. It would be helpful if its origin was more explanatory as it's on the webpage of search results (ie. doesn't come up on an actual webpage).

Or do you think that's the point - the Safe Search web page is seeking permission to set its own cookies via the popup?

Re: OneTrust cookie banner pop up

FWIW ~ I cobbled this last year ... because Safe Search is/was head scratch, for me.
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-safe-search-vs-norton-safe-search

https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-safe-search-vs-norton-safe-search-2

I do not use nor see need for Norton Safe Search web page or Norton Safe Search browser extension.   Just me.

Maybe, you can try Norton Safe Search web page from new default Chrome profile....if you're still concerned.

bjm Guru and Norton Fighter - Thank you so much for your time and help with this. Your hints and tips helped me to see the wood for the trees. I will try a new default Chrome profile as the cookie banner still appears with Web Safe extension.  Keep safe.
