Online Backup issues

Hi. In September I used Norton 360 online's backup on a computer that has since been retired. All of the documents/pictures/etc were moved from that computer to another. That backup is taking up a good part of 78% of my Norton online backup 25GB. According to the help screen at that site, it says that removing the computer from the backup website will delete the backup set. Instructions are:

  • Log on to Norton Online Backup.
  • On the home page, click Remove Computer.

The Remove Computer page lists all the devices that are available in your Norton Online Backup.

  • In the Remove Computer page, on the right side of the computer picture icon, click Remove.
  • In the confirmation dialog box that appears, click OK.

No where on that home page do I see anything that says 'remove computer'. The only options are file options to either email file links or download files. Do I need to get someone in tech support to help with this, or is that remove computer link hidden somewhere?

Thanks.

Re: Online Backup issues

Hi arlesh.

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums.

I think the problem may be that you are reading the help notes for Norton Online Backup (NOBU - the product) but the product you are using is N360 and not NOBU.

I also cannot see the "remove computer" option when I log in to the online website.

In the absence of anyone else having any better ideas I would suggest two ways that you may get rid of the unwanted backup.

  1. Assuming that you have N360 on your new computer, open up Windows Explorer and look for the "Norton Backup Drive".  Open that when you have an internet connection and you should see your old backup which if you right click it you should get the option to - delete.
  2. Log on the Norton Management and remove the old computer from the registration that it still seems to have there.  That hopefully should do the same thing as the guidance that you were getting before.  I cannot be sure that this will work but I think it should.  If you try it please post back and let us know how you got on.

I hope that helps.

Re: Online Backup issues

Thanks for trying Andmike. Unfortunately, I couldn't even find the backup drive. Maybe because this computer hasn't had a backup yet? I already removed the registration of the old computer - and found out later that doing that prevented me from downloading any of those files. Oh well, lessons learned. Since 360 is being phased out, I'll probably upgrade when its time to renew. Till then, I'll back up to a dvd.

Re: Online Backup issues

Hi arlesh.

Sorry that did not work.

If you do upgrade I assume you would be thinking of NSBU which I think you will find operates in much the same way as N360 for backup.

It would appear that just at the moment you are not in need of that backup space, but if you do need it and neither of my suggestions work then I would recommend having a chat with a Norton staffer via the free 24 hrs Internet Chat link.  As they are staff members they should have access to the Norton servers and should may be able to get the old data cleared out for you.

All the best.

Mike
