Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

I am using Norton Security on a Windows 8.1 PC with IE11.  When I open IE and the vault is closed, I do not get a vault login screen.  When I go to the first site that requires a user name and password, I almost never get a prompt to open the online vault.  I must click on the toolbar icon for "Identity Safe Cards and Logins", wait while the vault login page appears (usually a noticeable wait), enter the vault password and often close the Logins screen before the user name and password are automatically filled.  I'm looking for a simple, fast way to open the online vault using my vault password.

For example - I would like the ability to log on to the online vault when my PC starts up, and the vault is closed.  Is there a program name I can execute at startup that will open the vault login screen?  Another way to use just one screen to log on to the online vault would be fine.  Thanks.

Hello

We have a long thread going on. Could you please post in that thread and also please read that thread. Thanks.

I'll put this same post in that thread, but the thread title is "glitch".  What I'm posting about is not a glitch.  Perhaps the thread got off track and discussed my question?

Hello

Try reading at least some of the thread and see. Look especially at Liliana's posts in that thread. Although I personally don't use the vault, I think your questions or problems would fit into that thread.  That thread does get plenty of attention. If it doesn't fit in, you still have this thread also.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

floplot - I read through the entire thread you referenced.  It took well over an hour.  Honestly, I do not see what the information in that thread has to do with my request for a quick way to open the vault if it is closed upon restarting the PC.  It is a PITA to go through the steps to open the vault, either from within IE or from the NS program.  Are you suggesting that Liliana's workaround to use Identity Safe online to log in is a more simple process?  Ideally, what I am seeking is a program that I can start during the startup of the PC and be able to enter my vault password on that screen and go on with my business.  It would also be nice to be able to go directly to the vault login screen using an IE Favorite or some similar one click method, assuming I am previously logged into my Norton Account.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

BTW, I experienced the same New Password request screen for a while not long ago.  I worked around it by opening the vault in the NS program from the desktop.  Somehow that problem simply disappeared.  I have no idea why it disappeared.  I thought it was one of the frequent updates that run automatically.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Hi Daviddubya,

Currently their is no way to automatically open, or prompt to open the vault if it is an online vault (that I'm aware of).

The vault should prompt you to open it when ever you get to a page with a login screen but as you've found, it isn't reliable.

My only suggestion is to open a browser and click the "VAULT IS CLOSED" button on the Norton Toolbar.

However, if you are like me and are lucky enough to have a local vault you can change a setting to have the vault automatically open when Windows starts.  If that's you that is an easy fix.  Let us know and we can guide you through it.

There is a way to create a local vault too.  Please see this post for details.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Hi Daviddubya,

When you open IE 11 do you have the Norton Toolbar displayed?

If so, you can click on the Vault is Closed (where mine above says Vault is Open - which is what it goes to after logging into your vault) and you should be presented with the Vault Log-in screen, requesting your Vault password.  Or perhaps presented with the Norton Account Log-in screen - which you must be logged into prior to being able to log into the Vault.

Also once logged into your vault, select the three dots and Open Identity Safe Settings.  Go to the Security Tab and select Ask for my password at the beginning of each login session > Save > next go to the Browsing Tab and place checkmarks in the 3 choices under Infobar and also Autofill my logins when I visit websites > Save.

Please let us know if this helps any?

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Krusty13 - Thanks for your reply.  You have confirmed what I suspected - there is no way to prompt to open the vault without first opening a browser or opening NS and executing multiple steps to get the vault opened.  Oh well.  I tried setting up a shortcut to go directly to the online login page, www.identitysafe.com/VaultLogin.  I get directly to the page, but encounter an error after entering the vault password.  I'll keep looking for a one-step way to log in, but I am probably spinning my wheels.

I want to use the online vault because I use Identity Safe on three PCs, so a local vault is not a good solution for me.

If only Identity Safe worked as it was intended, all would be fine.  Getting the vault login screen when I go to a page that requires a user name and password if the vault is not open is pretty simple.  However, Identity Safe does not present the vault login screen most of the time.  I think I will go to Support and report this behavior as a problem, get a case ID and see where it goes from there.  Wish me luck!

Yank - Thanks for your reply.  I am already doing what you described to open the online vault.  I am looking (in vain?) for a quick, one step way to open the vault when Windows goes through startup.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Are you logged into your Norton Account on the main page of NS?  Upper right hand corner = Hello and your name?  If you are logged in there and stay logged in when you shut down, you should remain logged in on the next boot (waking from sleep etc) and all that is required will be to click on Vault is Closed and enter your Vault password.

That is the shortest way to getting logged into the cloud.  Of course the other choice is what Krusty13 suggested with the Local Vault.  I agree with 3 systems it is a PITA keeping all three current, as the only way I know of would be to Export/Import after every change.

Sorry you can't get the functionality your desire with the Online Vault.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Krusty13 - Neither of those sites does what I'm trying to do - make it really easy (one step) to automatically open your online vault with your vault password, when a Windows restart is being completed..  The VaultLogin site, which can be opened with an IE shortcut, will not work without generating an error trying to open the vault.  The other site requires a Norton Account login, even if you are already logged into your Norton Account.  Thanks for your ideas.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

In an earlier post I said, "I think I will go to Support and report this behavior as a problem, get a case ID and see where it goes from there.  Wish me luck!"  I went there twice today so far.  The first time I went to Support Chat I was number 17 in the queue.  I tried again just a few minutes ago and was number 38 in the queue.  I cannot find a way to email a report of the failure of Identity Safe to provide a prompt reliably, if the vault is closed.  It simply does not work most of the time.  Surely, this is a known problem!!!  I don't want to hang on the Support phone line until I get a rep to talk to me.  As I recall this prompt misbehavior has been around long before Norton Security was released.  Is there some reasonable method to communicate this problem to Support and get them to assign a case number and elevate it to the development folks to fix it?  Does anyone care other than me?

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Hello

That's why I suggested the other thread. Even if your problem isn't exactly the same, you do have a Symantec Employee who is very involved in that thread and also in other vault questions. She's off on the weekends and she is located in Europe, so the time frame may be different than yours. She may know who to contact for your problem if she isn't the one herself. Also, the weekends are the busiest time for the chat program since every one has more time on the weekends to try chatting with them for various reasons. If you have time, perhaps you might want to try chat during the week during the day time. If you do get to a tech person when you go thru chat, most likely they will want to remote into your computer.  Just some things to think about.

David, I reported this problem some time ago and got an email back the other day saying they would look into it.  I guess we will have to wait and see what the result is.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

krusty13 aka Dave - Thanks for your note.  I assume the problem you reported is the unreliable behavior of the open vault prompt in browsers, IE11 in my case.  It is good to know you are concerned and have a method to communicate with the folks at Norton, other than waiting in line at Support.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

David,

Actually, the method I used was to click on the VAULT IS OPEN button, then on the top right you should see Options.  Click that and choose Report an issue with this site.  While filling in the details I mentioned that the vault hardly ever prompts to open when it should.

All the best.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Hello Daviddubya,

Krusty13 has given you the procedure you need to report ID Safe not functionning on a specific website. As for the other issue, your request is noted, but I would advise against chaning the design of the product and have the vault automatically logged in. This provides you an added level of security on your computer and it's the general direction that systems are going into. For instance, with two-step verification we are also adding a second layer of authentication. In ID Safe, in practice you have the first layer, which is your Windows password, then the second, which is the Vault password. I wouldn't want my vault to be opened as soon as I start the PC. Hopefully no one will ever hack into my Windows account, but if they ever did, I would be protected.

Have a good day

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Liliana - Thank you for you quick reply.  I would like to clarify the points in this thread.  Krusty13 indeed has given me a way to report the failure of the vault password prompt for a specific web site.  However, the problem is far more universal than one web site.  The vault password prompt fails to appear almost every time I go to any web site that requires a user name and password, and the vault is closed.  Is there a better way to report this general issue with Identity Safe?

It was not my intention to bypass entering the vault password with my request above.  I would like to see a one step way to enter the vault password when the PC completes startup or wakes from sleep.  For example, adding a shortcut to the Startup folder in the Windows Start Menu, that would open the vault password prompt screen and allow the user to enter the password simply and quickly, and have the vault already open when opening the browser.  The multi-step process required to enter the vault password in the browser or in NS could be simplified to a one step action.  In addition, the fact that the vault prompt often fails to appear in the browser would no longer be an issue if the vault were already open when opening the browser.

Thanks for being active here in the Community.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Daviddubya,

I see no response to this post of mine    I can't get it down to one step with the Online Vault as you desire, but I can get it down to 2 steps with the Online Vault - if the answer to my response is yes your works that way - keeping you logged in thru reboot.

Just my 2¢, but you are beating a dead horse - there is no one step merely entering the password for an Online Vault for security reason.  If that is what you desire and will not settle for 2 steps, then you must go back to the Local Vault to regain that one step (password only) option.

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

Yank - I did respond to this post about 10 posts back: https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6199721#comment-6199721  Your second post seemed to cover the same points,

What I am looking for is NOT a security issue.  I simply think it would be better to be able to get to the vault password prompt at Windows startup time.  Perhaps products can be improved by beating a dead horse?  :)

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

... "The vault password prompt fails to appear almost every time I go to any web site that requires a user name and password, and the vault is closed." ...

I realize this is of little (if any) consolation, but the (more common) "Not Prompting" issue and it's counterpart, the (less common but more impacting/insidious) "Constantly Prompting" issue, have in-fact been a recurring and undesired problem theme for a very long time - and both variants seem to be further exacerbated by the use of an online (cloud-based) vault, as opposed to using a local vault.

Case in point...

https://community.norton.com/forums/nis-v21-ntb-fails-prompt-vault-pw

However, what may be of some (if only little) help is the discovery that clicking inside one of the log-in fields (ID or PW) on the website (sometimes) causes the ID Safe log-in bar to materialize ... presumption of "the reason why?" being that it's some sort of common code component carryover from the re-worked form-field "fill" changes made (and also commencing with) the advent of the v21 and now newer product releases ...

Kind regards,

John

Re: Open vault login screen at Windows startup?

avJohnnie - I am aware that the vault prompting mechanism has been broken for a long time.  Frankly, it should have been fixed a long time ago, but..  Your suggestion of clicking in the a login field to open the vault prompt gives me an alternative that I was not using.  I like it - it seems faster.  Thanks.

Yo Norton, how about fixing this long time bug in your software.

Yank - The link to the thread you gave me is very similar to the startup action I am hoping to find.  It seems he was about as successful in figuring out a programmable way to open the vault password prompt screen as I have been.  It is comforting to know that there is at least one other user that thinks this feature would be useful.  Thanks for alerting me to the other thread.
