Password Manager always asks me to sign in

When I start up the Password Manager at home it usually just asks me to enter the password of my (locally-stored) vault and I can go straight in.  Occasionally (and annoyingly) it asks me to sign in via the Norton server before I can get to the vault login.  About half those times the sign-in fails and it tells me to retry later (even MORE annoying, Norton).  However I am currently cycling through Patagonia (as one does) with VERY bad Internet connections.  Now it ALWAYS makes me sign in to my account before proceeding.  It often fails, and given the connections here, even if it succeeds it can take 10 minutes (yet more irritation, Norton).

So I cannot get passwords to, say, check my bank account.  How can I stop this persistent requirement to sign in via the server?  I just want to get into the vault to get passwords so I can do other business.  I have very scarce access to the Internet, so it is very frustrating to have to go through this time consuming and unreliable sign-in before I can do anything.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I have noticed this similar issue recently after my subscription was renewed.  I will leave the computer and come back later and attempt to use my local vault (Do not trust cloud vault! Sorry) and it shows ZERO Log-ins.  I thought something was wrong with the browser so I closed and reopened the browser; no change.  I then did a restart and then it made me sign into my Norton Account, before it would allow access to Password Manager.  Now after a period of being away from the computer, it does the same thing and makes me sign into my Norton Account then will let me sign into my Local Vault. Though on the toolbar the whole time through this process it says Vault is OPEN. I have to click close vault and then attempt to reopen it which then forces me to sign into my Norton Account first then click to open it again to enter the vault password.

Why has this changed? If I choose the leave my computer with the vault open that is my business.  Is there now a time frame when you are required to sign back into your Norton Account to access Password Manager?  Does this also mean that Norton Protection stops working on your computer if it signs you out of your Norton Account?!?! I am sure there has to be others having this same issue and questions.

Um, any chance local was moved to cloud?

I would like to inform you that Norton Identity Safe standalone product is now stopped by Norton as it was local vault and data security was compromising there. Now, you can use Identity safe from your installed Norton product and it is online vault where data will never be lost.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

No, I have always used Local Vault that came with NIS products never a standalone version. I even went through an older version reinstall to maintain the Local Vault a number of years ago.  I still use IE and Win7 so the extension works for me.   Anytime the Log in has asked me to convert I have ALWAYS said No. I don't know why but since it changed to Password Manager it stopped asking me when I would sign in to Vault.  However, this new issue has only recently came about since my subscription renewed.  When NIDS converted to Password Manager in September 2018, I noticed no change other than appearance.  I was not made to sign into my Norton Account as I am with this recent change.  Some may say that I should just convert; that's BS. I find it hard to believe as one poster said that the multiple levels of security would keep someone from accessing your data in the cloud.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Just a bit of information:

  • A Local Vault is tied to a Windows User - not a Norton Account. It may help if you use a Windows User with Admin privileges.
  • On my Win 7 running Norton Online Security (Comcast offering) with IE 7.  I can go into the Settings > Security Tab > and enable "Automatically open vault when Windows starts" and the Local Vault will open when I Shut Down and restart or just Restart.  No passwords required.
  • Please note that if that setting is not available on the Security Tab, you in fact do not still have a Local Vault.

Something I have noticed, if the "Vault is Closed"  is displayed on the Toolbar and I select the three dots, I only get one (the General) page of the Settings.  If I select the X on that page, that page disappears and there is a page displayed to sign into your Local Vault (vault password only is asked for).  Once the vault is opened you will gain access to the setting for Auto start I mentioned above.

<EDIT>  I just tried the three dots suggestion from above on a WIN 10 system running Norton Security Premium and using IE and I ended up on a "Get Started Page" asking for me to sign into my Account or create a new one.  I can not sign into my account from that page - I got dizzy watching it spin. I do not have a Local Vault on this system.

If in fact you are able to access your vault after logging into your Norton Account, you are not accessing a local vault any more. You may have gotten the vault converted  when signing in at some time in the past. There are constant prompts by Norton when you try to sign into a local vault trying to get you to merge or convert your vault to the cloud. If you were not paying close enough attention, you could easily have click the wrong option. When you choose to convert, your local vault is lost.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Peter web I have never converted my vault despite the nagging prompts from norton. I believe that this change happened when they changed NIDS to Password Manager but through multiple conversations with Norton and both on phone and on chat they will not aqueous to such. I was told there was an update and unfortunately I cannot change it back. I am intelligent enough to know not to click the wrong button. I will say that the prompts stopped sometime in the past though i do not know when that was. But i do know it was not from.me clicking incorrectly. I have never wanted a cloud vault. And I believe that Norton changed this arbitrarily.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Thanks bjm, still annoying though.  I don't care where Norton store my passwords as long as I can get to them quickly and easily.

As I mentioned in the first post, the problem is that often I cannot log in to the server, or it is very slow to do so.  Without getting to it, I cannot do anything else.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Sorry I don't believe that is the solution. I did not move my Vault to the cloud. I believe it was when Norton changed identity safe to password manager and arbitrarily pulled your information into the cloud. I have never wanted a cloud Vault so I would not have done that. I'm awaiting call back from their Tech Team regarding the process

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I didn't move my vault either, or at least not knowingly.  I would prefer to keep it local, as I store some passwords just to get into apps on the device.  However the biggest problem to me is not being able to get to the vault (wherever it is) because the server is unreachable.  Norton has done a lot of stupid things to me, so I might move onto something else.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

To determine whether you still have a local vault see Yank's post above.

If you did still have a local vault, there is no way that Norton would have been able to 'automatically' convert to the cloud. Only the user with the local vault has the password. Even a process started by a Norton update would still have to prompt the user to enter the vault password.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

On my main Norton screen top right corner it says, "Signed in as <my email address>"

When I try to open my vault using the Norton tool bar in IE I am asked to sign in to my Norton account.

When I sign in to the account that Norton main screen says I am already signed into, I am offered my vault sign in screen.

It seems that the Norton tool bar, "open my vault button" does not have the same information about my signed in status as the Norton main app screen.

Please Norton main app talk to Norton tool bar.

Please Norton tool bar talk to Norton main app.

If the main Norton screen says at top right that I am signed in, I should not need to sign I a second time before using my vault password to open my vault.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Based on conversations with Norton's staff I do believe it is possible that they could convert....their one rep told.me your information is in our servers., there was an update made, etc. I know I did not do the conversion myself as I have previously stated, I have NEVER wanted a cloud vault. There is a setting within NIS that permits the automatic download of a new version...I am not "techy" enough to know if there is a loophole there or not. But I know that I did not click convert to cloud.

their one rep told.me your information is in our servers.

This is probably referring to the fact that the only vault you can create now is an online vault. It has been years now since you could create a local vault with your Norton product. You have to be really savvy to maintain the local vault. All documentation the support people have is only for cloud vaults.

Have you checked the information in my last post to determine what kind of vault you have? That information is definitive.

If you had to reinstall your Norton over the last couple of years you may have ended up creating a cloud vault.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I just checked my Norton on my laptop which doesn't get updates as frequently since I do not use it except when traveling. Identity safe is still the program listed there and the option of which you mentioned in the security tab shows. It also asks me to convert which I ignored. Years ago when norton went to cloud based vault, I did a reinstall of my 2012 NIS to establish the local vault first. I was told that by doing so I would be able to maintain the local vault. I really do not want to go through all that again simply because by method of upgrading norton now seems to remove your prior version and install the newer which would seem to make my valiant efforts to maintain a local vault pointless. Peterweb, I am unsure of when the change occurred and I do remember using norton's remove and reinstall product at one point because something in their software didn't update correctly but I did not knowingly click anything that converted the vault....I believe that this process which they recommended I follow, caused the conversion. As I said before I remember the nagging prompts to convert stopped sometime ago though I dont recall when. But I do know I did not knowingly convert the vault. I am wondering if there is a way to reestablish the local vault on my desktop by using files from laptop which appears to still have it. In reviewing these posts I remember reading about such a process. Norton's staff have been less than helpful only telling me there is nothing they can do about it. As I said previously I have never had to sign into my norton account to access my vault until only recently once my subscription was renewed (this month) and updates through live update were processed. There was no info telling me that my vault was converting during these updates, though as I said I still am of the opinion that based on what their reps and supervisors told me, the update was done and there was nothing I could do about it. I asked them to tell me when the vault was converted and that is why i am awaiting a callback from them.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I have just had another annoying failure of the type that made me start this post.  After several attempts to log in to the server, which just faded into oblivion with no error message, I now have a pop-up with a server error message telling me to try again later.

Norton, this is EXACTLY WHY I want a local vault!  Once I eventually get into the vault everything else goes fine, so I can log into my bank etc.  The only choke point is the unreliable server access.

Kindly fix this, Norton.  My vault password is very secure - I don't need the extra hassle of going via your flaky server.  If you think the cloud vault is more secure, at least give us the option to keep it local.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I had this same.issue yesterday the server was not responding when I needed to access my vault. I tried multiple times and nothing...the screen just kept saying communicating with server...just like hisnerdship I want a local vault. To make me sign into my Norton account separately (when apparently I already am according to NIS interface) then again sign into my vault is BS. Plus as already mentioned the server doesn't always allow consistent access...Bring back local vault!

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Unfortunately, we are never going to see Norton support for a local vault again. All the complaints here have fallen on deaf ears.

The last browser that we were able to use a local vault with is IE. And now it seems that function may have been removed from the product. Now it may be that the only way to use a local vault is to open it in your Norton Security product. Then all you can do is copy and paste the login information into your browser.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

But I AM accessing the vault via my local Norton Security application (on Windows 10) by clicking the Online Safety tab followed by the Password Manager 'button'. You seem to suggest that doing it this way should take me to the local vault. Er, no, it doesn't!

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I'm not saying that the Norton GUI will take you to a local vault. I am just saying the only way to access a local vault, if in fact you do have one, is probably with the Norton Security GUI, if there has been some change to IE's access to vaults. You can also access a cloud vault vault the same way. This is no indication of what kind of vault you have.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

I removed the Norton toolbar from my (Chrome) browser because it took up valuable real estate and I only ever used the vault button (does it still exist?). So I have ONLY accessed the vault via the Norton Security desktop application. Doesn't seem to have stopped them doing this unsolicited migration of my data!

Re: Password Manager always asks me to sign in

Well everyone has a point here, problem is double signing in, both account and vault each time. Bottom line as to updates/grades is, if you want the best protection out there you must stay up to date. And using these products for better than 20 years, no one does it better in my book, fact is they were not called Norton when I 1st started using them.... Now just wish they fixed the bugs as well as they protect my computers and information.
