pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Last week I had to format my computer because I kept getting a blue screen on start up. I solved the problem till last night when I got an update and now when I close my pc it hangs & wont shut down. This means I have to turn it off using the ON / OFF button, but when I turn it back on I get the same blue screen which I fixed.

So where I had one problem, which I fixed I now have two caused by this new Version 22.5.0.124 for Windows xp.

THANKS ALLOT#####

HEADS UP PEOPLE

Early today I was forced, yet again to turn off my laptop using the off button then at 8pm when I turned it back on I got a black screen and this.

NTLDR is missing

No matter what I did I could not get the laptop to boot up until I found in my acer bios’

HOLD ALT + F10

This forced the laptop into recovery mode which totally wiped my C: Drive clean….

My laptop comes with Norton’s 2006 though I've added what updates there are I keep getting this.

LU1847: LiveUpdate could not determine if there is an update for this product because the update list for this product is corrupted.

Plus when I try to log into my account it says I’m not on line..

Q: is there a link to the last version of Norton before this latest version otherwise I fear you'll cause the same problem all over again..

Oh man! That really sucks! I hope you had all your documents backed up. Are you using any disk imaging or recovery software like Norton Ghost or Macrium Reflect? It saves so much time in recovering from these kinds C: drive corruption problems. I'm able to recover my C: drive in less that 10 minutes. If you need more info let me know and I'll give you more details as to how to set this up.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

My laptop has two drives and the first time I ever formated it I noticed it never touched the D: Drive.

So now I save all my files to the d: before backing them up.

Its just the hassle of having to reload all my programs and do endless updates and this after just formating it the other week!!

Then there's having to find all my bookmarks which where all lost when the C: was wiped.

Not to mention  I'm now using an anchent vertion of Nortons that has a RED OUT OF DATE CROSS over the icon.

So a gurentee this new vertion is working is what I need most, as I don't feel safe loading the new vertion to go through this hell again!!

By the way that missing files NTLDR was in C:Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder. which I tracked down after the restore.

This is the first time since subscribling to nortons I've ever had a problem though i sure do need your help now..

Hi kingofscotland:

Could you please clarify your current situation.  Symantec employee Mohan_G posted <here> on 10-Jul-2015 requesting that you send him diagnostic logs, so our assumption is that you are already receiving assistance from Symantec.

The Microsoft Support article Windows may not start and you may receive an "NTLDR is missing" error message if Windows is not up-to-date and there are too many files in the root folder suggests that your original problem with Windows XP was not fixed.  If Windows has now restored your computer to it's original factory settings of 2006 then all your software, including your Windows OS and Norton installation, is extremely out-of-date.  Without being able to access your computer remotely or look at diagnostic logs, which Symantec support can do, it's almost impossible for users in this forum to determine the current status of your Windows and Norton installations and provide advice on the best way forward.

Yes there is...

Since you didn't specify which Norton product, here are all the latest v21 download links...

v21.x NAV:   www.norton.com/oldnav
v21.x NIS:   www.norton.com/oldnis

v21.x 360 Premier:   www.norton.com/oldn360p

After the installation, remember to go into settings and disable "Automatic Download of New Version", ASAP ...
After the "New Version" option is disabled, run, and then continue to run Liveupdate until it reports "No Updates Found".

Hi AlMejias:

The Norton Toolbar browser extension that comes bundled with Norton Security already includes Norton Identity Safe, so if you found Norton Identity Safe listed as a separate entity in your Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) then you likely had an old copy of Identity Safe Standalone (IDSS) that should have been removed before Norton Security was installed.  You also mentioned problems with ChkDsk and Norton Disk Doctor in takfuji's thread Norton Security w/Latest Update Blocks Win-XP Shutdown.  I'm not sure, but I believe Norton Disk Doctor is a discontinued product and is no longer supported - unless you have Norton Utilities (NU) installed on your computer and are referring to the Disk Doctor feature that comes with NU.

Since you are using different Norton products than kingofscotland it might make more sense to start a new thread in the forum and list your Windows OS (I assume Win XP SP3) and all current Norton products (including version numbers) installed on your machine.  It sounds like you need to wipe all the remnants of your old Norton installations using the Norton Removal Tool before reinstalling NS (and possibly NU) but we need to know exactly what Norton products you have.  It would also be helpful to know whether you still use Identity Safe to manage your login passwords, and if so, whether you use a local or online vault to store your passwords.

Plus the product key in my account wont acctivate the nortons 360 link???????

So how do I find the 360 procut key ????

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Try using v21.x NAV:   www.norton.com/oldnav

Are you running N360 or NAV

You may need you NAV key handy upon NAV install.   Now you'll have to remove N360 by Norton Removal Tool.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

In my account I have norton 360 Premier & Norton antivirus which I'm paying for but can't use because of the shutdown problems. v21.x 360 Premier:   www.norton.com/oldn360p

........

"You may need you NAV key handy upon NAV install" v21.x NAV:   www.norton.com/oldnav

Is this the same key in my account or another key like 360 and I haven't got??? Plus will I then have three versions of Norton’s in my account, two I cant activate and one that will cause problems......

I can't keep downloading and installing all these programs when all I want is the latest Norton’s too which I'm paying for. Where now I'm forced to install older versions with a massive headache too boot when they don’t activate. Plus I have to block the live updates or it loads the newer problem version So how long will 360 be safe before it needs updating?

I need facts or the 360 activation code till this new version is sorted. Who knows 30 days from now all these problems maybe resolved and we can all move on...

I'm not installing another program till I get facts and the activation codes. If I cant use Norton’s antivirus then Norton’s should give me the 360 code, you have my email, send it..

Plus if you log into your account then the activation should be automatic given its telling me I’m a subscriber.

....................

UPDATE….

I though I turned off the updates but while under immense pressure I only turned off the update every 15 mins to 5  hours

and while I did the last post unbeknown to me I got an update restart now.

So I have two Norton 360 premier trials in my Nortons account under SERVICES.

sigh!!!!!!!

You won't find a key for N360 p unless you have paid for that program. If you have paid for NAV, then that is the program you have to use. Perhaps a chat with Customer Support can straighten out things for you. They are the ones who fix subscription problems.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

After installing Norton’s 360 Premier then accidentally allowing it to update “MY BAD” to the newer version of 360.  It too like my Norton’s antivirus subscription failed to close down.

I then removed 360 and did many close down tests, all of which where successful proving Norton’s has a problem.

I’ve now loaded as BJM suggested: v21.x NAV:   www.norton.com/oldnav

Plus I’ve turned off the AUTOMATIC DOWNLOAD OF NEW VERTION under settings.

So at least we know the newer Norton’s antivirus & Norton’s 360 premier are conflicting with windows XP when shutting down.

I’m glad to say my laptop appears to be back to where it was before the update. Now its up to Norton’s to find out why its causing these problems before I and others should ever update to the latest version…

Oh yes my subscription is now ACTIVE.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Update:
1. The 22.5.2.15 still has the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I uninstalled Norton Security via the Control Panel.
I had to force a shutdown at the end of the uninstall process.
The computer rebooted and worked fine after removing Norton Security. No hangs at Windows Shutdown and now hangs at Chkdsk C: /f!
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

2. The CLEAR system did NOT have the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I obtained the latest version of Norton Security from www.norton.com/setup, v22.5.2.15.
I installed as per instruction
I rebooted as per instructions
After reboot the system hangs at Windows shutdown and hangs at Chkdsk C: /f.
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

3. The 22.5.2.15 still has the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
I used the Norton Removal Tool to clean all Norton product off my Windows XP system.
I manually cleared out the files remaining files.
I manually went through the Registry to clear out Norton and Symantec references.
The clean system works fine! No hangs at Windows Shutdown and now hangs at Chkdsk C: /f!
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

4. The cleared CLEAR system did NOT have the Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk hang problems. So I did the following.
Again, I obtained the latest version of Norton Security from www.norton.com/setup, v22.5.2.15.
Again, I installed as per instruction
Again, I rebooted as per instructions
Again, after reboot the system hangs at Windows shutdown and hangs at Chkdsk C: /f.
Conclusion: Norton Security is the problem. The 22.5.2.15 update did not fix the problem.

It's clear to me, and all the users having these Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk problem, that the cause is Norton Security. None of the other Norton products had this problem. None of the other versions of Norton Internet Security or Norton Antivirus had this problem. Norton / Symantec needs to fix this!

I've been recommending Norton / Symantec products to clients, friends, and family for over 20 years! Norton / Symantec was effective and responsive. That stops now. I've been noticing a steady decline in product quality and effectiveness for the past 5-7 years. These Norton Security Windows XP Shutdown and Chkdsk problems are causing harm to systems. You may have additional monitoring, or other software like Malwarebytes or similar, or encryption software that might conflict with Norton.

Maybe be also your pc's config/hardware.

I've used my XP SP3 laptop all the week, many times, with "countless" shutdowns or restarts, not a single hang!!

Also, I do not use the chkdsk command at all, my HDD works fine and I do not intend to damage it with consecutive chkdsk commands, last time I ran that command was about 10 years ago on that particular laptop, however, I agree that if it hangs it needs to be fixed by Symantec.

Again, my XP system is running fine here...

Sorry AlMejias, but to my knowledge it unfortunately will not work...

At one time Norton was allowing a limited-duration variance for this, but I don't know if that is still being allowed.

You could try sending one of the Admins a PM, perhaps to Tony_Weiss, explaining your situation and see what he says...

Sadly, even if there was such a link, it wouldn't do you much good AlMejias...

As soon as it installed and ran just a few Liveupdates, you'd be right back where you are presently, because the v22 to v25 update cannot be disabled on either NS product.

I was just getting ready to report this also.  I first had the problem after updating to ver. 22.5.0.124 (the new green format).  I too have uninstalled Norton which solved the problem.  After re-installation the problem returned.

Another problem I have had with this update is the Norton Toolbar causing Firefox to quit responding.  I have had to disable the extension to keep Firefox from crashing.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

hi K Gannaway

I have heard in the past of Norton and XP having a problem, it is some time ago so the threads also will be.

The latest version of Norton is 22.5.2.15, perhaps running Live Update a few times may trigger the download of the latest version.

If not a fresh install of Norton from your Account will install the latest version, I don't think (may be wrong) that the "New Version Check" in the Help menu on he main Norton UI would give you the latest version as it is not a major upgrade in version numbers e.g. from 22.x.x.xxx to 23.x.x.xxx although, it may be worth a try just in case I'm wrong.

Hello

According to Tony Weiss's Hot Issues Announcement, this is one of the remaining issues in version 22.5.2.15

Please see    https://community.norton.com/en/forums/hot-issues-and-fixes-nsnsbu-225

Have you updated to FF 39.03 if that has been released yet? It is supposed to fix a flaw with .pdf files, but perhaps it will help with the crashing issue also. The crashing issue with FF has been going on for a while. A search of Firefox crashes using our Search feature up on top will result in quite a few threads.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Hi JoelSIRON25:

I see from your previous posts that you're running Norton Security (NS) v22.5.2.15 on a Win XP SP3 computer.  Unfortunately, Symantec employee Tony Weiss' post HOT ISSUES AND FIXES - NS/NSBU 22.5 still list the following as a known issue:
"2) Windows XP operating system unable to shutdown normally after updating to 22.5"

Have you been contacted by Symantec employee Mohan_G since he posted a reply to you <here> in this thread?  If not, I'd suggest that you send him a private message (PM) by going to his forum profile at http://community.norton.com/en/users/mohang and clicking "Send this user a private message" to remind him that you're still experiencing shutdown issues.  Note that you have to be signed in to the forum in order to send and read PMs.

Apostolos reported <here> that a clean re-install of NS v22 solved the shutdown hang on a XP computer (N360/NIS/NAV v22 users have the option of downgrading back to v21) so it appears that this v22 bug does not affect 100% of XP users.  Let us know if you'd like to try a clean re-install of NS v22.5.2.15 while you're waiting for a reply from Mohan_G and we'll post step-by-step instructions, although there's no guarantee that a clean re-install will help if your system is affected by this bug.

Hey LMacri,

Just a clarification, the post of mine you linked above, mentions that I did a clean reinstall of NS just to have a fresh copy, NOT because I had shutdown problems on my XP pc.

I never had shutdown issues with NS even before the clean reinstall, clearly the issue does not affect all XP systems.

Hope this helps,

Just a clarification, the post of mine you linked above, mentions that I did a clean reinstall of NS just to have a fresh copy, NOT because I had shutdown problems on my XP pc.  I never had shutdown issues with NS even before the clean reinstall, clearly the issue does not affect all XP systems.

Thanks for the clarification. After following this thread for almost two months I'm starting to loose track of everyone's input (or just going senile ).  We aren't making much progress here, so I hope Symantec has contacted Win XP users affected by this bug and asked them to provide diagnostic logs.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

I'd also like to make some clarifications. I've followed all the instructions on this thread and and a couple of other Norton Community threads. I've also gone back to fresh Windows XP installs. In every case, after installing Norton Security it causes the Windows Shutdown Hang / Stall problem and Chkdsk Hangs. In every case when Norton Security is not installed or removed Windows XP shuts down normally and Chkdsk runs normally.

The latest Hot Issues  https://community.norton.com/en/forums/hot-issues-and-fixes-nsnsbu-225 still lists this as a known and as yet unfixed problem.

We are still waiting after many months for Norton to fix this known and arguably damaging problem.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Hi,

JoelSIRON25 asks me to help him to solve his problem. The computer is an ACER with Windows XP SP3, and Norton Security 22.5.2.15 version, like he has always described on this thread.

When I clic on shutdown button, the computer begin to stop, but stays on the creen "Closing windows", and we must use the physical button to stop the computer.
When restarting, windows is making a scandisc, and I saw that files was found on a Norton temp folder. So I dicided to uninstall Norton Security, with Norton removal tool. After that, the computer shut down very well several time.
To protect the computer, I decided to install Norton Security again, and after install the 22.5.2.15 version, the problem of shutdown is still the same. I tell Joel to let the computer power on, but this is not a solution...
I don't find another way to solve this problem!!!
If somebody have a solution?
Best regards.

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Hi,

I had the same problem. My solution was to uninstall NIS. I downloaded NIS 21.7.0.11 and installed (the link may be mentioned in this thread?). I then unchecked the option to Automatically Update the version (not the signatures). So far so good.

Good luck

Re: pc wont close after Version 22.5.0.124 Windows xp update

Hi everyone,

Sorry for not getting back sooner.

Our teams are working on this issue and we would like to know more information to narrow down this issue:

  • Could you please tell me what FILE SYSTEM [NTFS / FAT32] is in the partition where Windows XP is installed?

How to find the File System?

  1. Open My Computer
  2. In my computer, right-click the drive you want to view.
  3. Click Properties
  4. The Properties window should list the file system in the General tab.  It should be NTFS or FAT 32  or FAT / FAT16

Hi Boris_ES:

Could you please let us know what Norton product [e.g., Norton Internet Security (NIS), Norton AntiVirus (NAV), etc.] and version number you have installed on your own Win XP computer?  Open Norton and go to Support | About in the main window to find this information.  The process ccSvcHst.exe (Symantec Service Framework) is associated with older versions of Norton products [e.g. v19.x (2012) and earlier] and if you use an older version of Norton then your issue is likely unrelated to the problem being discussed in this thread by Norton v22.5.2.15 (2015) users.
