Pop-ups from Norton

Everytime I open my computer, and sometimes just randomly, I get a pop-up saying it's from Norton. It tells me that I've been compromised (or rather my passwords are) and I should follow the link so Norton gives me a strong password. I've never seen pop-ups from Norton and am very leery to click further. I've tried to get rid of it in various ways as it is rather disturbing. It won't go away. Could it be that this is a legit pop-up due to the Vault password change? I've never received messages from Norton via pop-ups. Thanks.

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

Hi, what if I don't want the Google extension and am happy with Norton doing all those jobs. Is there anything I can do to stop those annoying pop-ups telling me that my passwords have been compromised (which they haven't). I started to follow the link one time and when I got to a certain point the message stopped and disappeared. I have no reason to trust this message and just want to get rid of it. I checked Google Passwords but don't want that extension. (I also have no idea what a throttled message is).

Hi, what if I don't want the Google extension

Then remove or disable the Norton Password Manager extension.

Is there anything I can do to stop those annoying pop-ups telling me that my passwords have been compromised (which they haven't).

IDK, I've not seen this release feature/s.  I do not use Norton Password Manager.

Maybe, Chat with Official Norton Support can further advise.

This extension uses permissions that produce the following Chrome messages to perform necessary functions within the extension.

“Read and change all your data on the websites you visit”
Shown for permissions needed for supplying password manager features to all types of pages you browse.

“Read your browsing history”
Shown for permissions needed for:
- automatically opening and close new tabs when opening the vault, displaying vault contents, or autochanging a password.
- examining webpages you browse to display product controls in the webpage itself (badges in form fields, popup windows with lists of logins, etc.)

“Modify data you copy and paste”
Shown for permissions needed for giving convenient clipboard usage of user-selected vault data (e.g. a login's username or password).

“Display notifications”
Shown for permissions needed for showing alerts when important changes are happening to a vault or when an error has occurred.

“New background app added
Norton Password Manager will launch at system startup and continue to run in the background, even once you've closed all other Google Chrome windows.”
Shown for permission used to keep the extension running in order to quicken startup times and reduce number of times vault authentication is needed.

This extension also uses permissions that are not displayed in Chrome for performing certain functions within the extension:

“webRequest” and “webRequestBlocking” permissions
Needed for authenticating access to your vault.

“storage” permission
Used to store and retrieve settings data used by the extension.

IDK, if turning off "running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" will curtail NPM activity.

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

Hi, I always did have "running background apps when Google is closed". So that didn't make a difference. I just added Password manager google ext. to extensions. Maybe that will stop the nonsense. Kudos to you, let's hope this works. Thanks for your reply.

Maybe, I've misunderstood origin of "pop-up" saying it's from Norton + compromised password.

I thought you already had Norton Password Manager extension installed.

Maybe, you can post pic of "pop-up".

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

I'm glad to say that I can't send a pic of the pop-up, I don't get them anymore. I had "running in background" it had always been on. Then I just followed the link, but first I took a deep breath. It took me to an installation page on Google. I already had Norton password manager but it seems that Norton won't be doing that for much longer and advise to get the Google extension. What the heck. So I got the Google extension. It's obvious by now that I haven't got a clue but the pop-ups stopped after I did that. I also have Bitdefender on my computer, it was downloaded when I bought it. I had been used to using Norton so I continued on with that. I now know that I have to disable Bitdefender. I thought I'd already done that but apparently not. Though I did these things without knowing for sure if I should the annoying pop-ups stopped. They had the symantec Norton name on them and the emblem which is another reason I thought I might as well give it a try. Nothing weird has happened since, so I guess I'm okay. Thanks for your help and advice.

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

Hello

Are you running just the Norton Password Manager or are you also running a Norton Security program?  Are you still running Bitdefender as your security program? The Norton Password Manager is not available as a Standalone product for new downloads.

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

I am long-time Bitdefender user planning to switch to Norton, as Bitdefender make my pc run very slow. While researching online, I read that according to recent AV lab test scores https :// www . cimananotech . com/bitdefender-vs-norton/  Bitdefender is better in terms of malware protection as compared to Norton. But the system impact of  Bitdefender still puts some impact on system. I wanted to know what are you thoughts. And is it a good idea to run both at the same time?

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

Hello Jennifer

It is a big no no to run two security programs in real time. You have  to remove Bitdefender with their remover tool, restart and then install your Norton program. Having 2 security programs in real time will also put a strain on your computer. What operating system are you using and what browser?

Re: Pop-ups from Norton

Hi, you said hello to Jennifer so either you have our names mixed up or we both have the same problem. Your answer is good info for me too though.

You're speaking to Karen at the moment.

Microsoft and Google Chrome

I had a suspicion that I would have to get rid of one or the other. I'll try to get rid of Bitdefender if I can figure out what a remover tool is.

Thanks for your help.
