Possible virus by US Government to plant child porn on PC

I was told by a computer  illiterate person, whom I shall give the pseudonym "Sally Smith" that she was asked to put child porn on my laptop.  Sally did not know how to do it, and supposedly they had a device to do it, and said "Peter is gay, so he probably looks at child porn anyhow."  I showed Sally a thumbnail drive, and she said "Yes, that's the device which they gave me to my home, but then asked for it back."

I have read about 1-2 cases (one in India), but to have the DEA/ATF do that is really bad.  And I trust Sally since she did not know the details, and it was only later I found out that this method would not have child porn on the drive (which is illegal), but would connect to the web and download child porn.

Is this a known virus, and can Norton Antivirus Security stop it?

Re: Possible virus by US Government to plant child porn on PC

With all due respect, this is the most preposterous story I have read on this forum EVER.

Did Sally get positive identification from her visitors? Why would the US Government believe that Sally would cooperate in a "sting" against her neighbor involving kiddie porn?

Neither the DEA nor ATF have jurisdiction over child porn - that jurisdiction lies with the FBI and Justice Department.

If the "DEA/ATF" knew that someone had/was downloading child porn why would they need that person to do it again?

The FBI has it's hands full already with investigating cases of child porn, as it is considered to be nearlly as reprehensible as a crime against humanity, they have no need to go around setting innocent citizens up with such a charge.

I have never heard of hand-delivered hardware containing malware to a stranger via a neighbor/friend. Are you known to be very wealthy and thus an excellent target for blackmail?

The USB could very well have injected malware/spyware into your system to obtain financial info or blackmail you to pay them off so as not to have your PC download kiddie porn and subject you to 20 years in jail where your fellow inmates would treat you as among the lowest of the low.

There are programs that detect and alert you to the installation of a "new keyboard input device", the typical way of using "bad usb" to infect/take control over  your PC, but I personally know of no security suite that would otherwise protect you from bad USB itself, as it is not detectable.

I would report this incident to the Cybercrimes Division of the FBI. You can do it online.

Your thread title is unartfully written. If it is this case that all that you relate is true, It is highly likely that the USB contained some type of malware but you can be certain it was not the US Government that was the culprit here and it is an insult to suggest that it was. If you are wealthy this was most likely the work of a skilled cybercriminal. If not, it sounds morfe like a cruel, thoughtless ,childish prank by some stupid kiddie scripter.

Because NS cannot determine who is operating the "keyboard input" device of your PC it is doubtful that it could have protected you. It is not a "keylogger" in the traditional sense. It is also doubtful that NS could protect you from a robber who hit you over the head in a dark alley to rob you of your wallet.

Kudos for not being dumb enough to insert the subject USB.

Congratz on having an honest and trustworthy friend like "Sally."
