Printer & Network not working after NS install

My own laptop dies recently. Bought a new (Windows 10 Lenovo) one. It came with trial version of McAfee preinstalled (boo!). It worked fine. But I deleted it, downloaded Nortons from my account and installed it.

At first it wouldn't allow me connect to the internet but I sorted that. Now my Seagate Media Server (Network drive) doesn't show up and my printer won't work. Help! I uninstalled Nortons and the Seagate appeared again in File Explorer and the printer worked.

Reinstalled Nortons - problems are back. I tried changing the Firewall setting in Nortons for "Network Connections" to Full Trust. No difference. I tried adding devices to "Device Trust" but no joy. Damn, don't want to have to switch to McAfee!  Any ideas?               Lindsey

Did you use the Mcafee Consumer Products Removal tool to fully remove the Mcafee trial?  See here.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I used Windows - Uninstall to remove McAfee. Following your comment I ran the McAfee Removal tool and it completed successfully. Then I reinstalled Nortons. Same problem. Printer not working and can't access Seagate Nas in File Explorer. Help!

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

Try right clicking on the Norton icon in your system tray and click on Turn off Smart Firewall. Then try accessing your printer and NAS.

One other thing to look into is restarting your computer. Check to see if you have the Fast Startup feature enabled. It has been known to cause issues with lots of software that needs a complete system shutdown and restart to complete updates.

If you use Windows 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

Ok. I disabled Smart Firewall, and checked - still no printing or Nas.

I then disabled Fast Startup. Shut down and re-booted. No difference. But .....for a minute I thought you had found the solution, because when the machine booted and I opened File Explorer, I could actually access the NAS, (the folders etc appear,) but after about 30 seconds I get a message stating that "Windows cannot access " the NAS and the folders disappear. Strange.

What else could be at play? When I uninstalled Nortons previously both the printer and NAS worked, so it has to be Norton related.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

I am using Windows 10 and Norton Security on two computers (one wired and one wireless) and I have the same issue with my two Western Digital MyBookLive Drives connected to an ASUS RT-AC87U Router. Windows 10 File Explorer sees the MyBookLives as Storage devices and Media Devices, but File Explorer doesn’t see them as Computers, so they won’t appear under the Network breakout. Since they don’t appear under Network, you can’t see or access folders on the MyBookLives. Interestingly, on rare occasions, for no apparent reason, they will appear as Computers and under Network and I can access files on the drives, but the next time I look they might be gone. My backup software (WD Smartware) doesn’t have any problem performing backups to the MyBookLives.

My Windows 7 Laptop (wireless connection) with Norton Security always sees and has access to the drives and folders.

Prior to the November “Version 1511” update to Windows 10 everything was fine, but after the update my problem with NAS drives began. So, my issue appears to be a Windows 10 issue and you can find many users complaining about this on the internet as well as the Microsoft Windows 10 Community/Forum. I think “Build 10586” was supposed to fix it, but it didn’t.

This is just my experience/opinion, but other users experiencing this issue might have a completely different experience/opinion.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

If I go to the list of processes in (Windows) Task Manager and end "Norton Security (32 bit)", my printer works immediately and the NAS appears again in File Manager. (I had unchecked tamper protection in Norton - Settings.) Unfortunately after a few minutes Norton Security appears again in the list of processes and my printer and NAS are killed again. Any ideas as to how I could solve this? (I don't want to have to switch to McAfee - I like Nortons)

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

It's a frustrating issue to say the least! I tried ending the "Norton Security (32 Bit)" process in Task Manager, but it didn't help. In my case the problem with NAS Drive Folders and Files being directly accessible through File Manager still appears to be a Windows 10 problem.

However, your situation might be completely different.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

How many times have you restarted your system since disabling Smart Firewall?  Try a couple of more restarts.

As you say you saw the NAS for about 30 seconds, the Norton product would have been active the whole time. As BuckV115 notes, this is probably a Win 10 related issue. The fact that it stops when Norton is uninstalled does not necessarily confirm a Norton problem. Also disabling the Norton Smart Firewall making no difference also would seem to show it is not Norton.

Look in Windows Event Viewer to see if you can see what is happening for the first minute or so after booting. Maybe something will show up around the time you say the NAS access quits.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

Hello

Maybe changing the boot up protection level might help or perhaps a delayed start up of the NAS and printer. Have the drivers been updated?

Thanks

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

I MAY have solved the problem!

1. I ran services.msc and noticed that Windows Firewall was running. I changed the properties to disabled and re-booted. My printer worked and I could access the Nas. Hurray!!!!  Thing is,  I went back and changed the setting for Windows Firewall to automatic - to verify that Windows Firewall was the problem - and rebooted. The printer and Nas still worked!!  I checked it's properties via services.msc and while it set to automatic, it is not listed as running.  Strange.

Should I leave Windows Firewall disabled?

2. 1. The boot up protection (Norton - Settings - AntiVirus) was set to off. I changed this to normal. What is, or should be the default setting be for this?

Nortons is running and my printer and Nas work. Happy days! Without your advice though, I wouldn't have got this far. Thank you.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

The Windows Firewall Service needs to be availabe for Norton to be able to use the Windows APIs for its firewall services.

The Boot Time Protection setting just starts the Norton Protection earlier in the boot process to give better protection during the boot process. I would leave it at least at Normal. I like to leave mine set to Aggressive, to get the maximum protection.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

Thanks.  I'll leave the Boot Time Protection setting at normal. Although the Windows Firewall service is set to automatic, it's not listed as running - presumably it's available to Nortons?

I have access to the NAS and my printer is still working.

Re: Printer & Network not working after NS install

Best advice...If it's not broke, don't fix it.

Glad you found a solution.

If you could mark your post where you describe the fix as the solution, it can help others who might see this issue to find a solution. There is a link beside the Reply link just below each post for Mark as Solution.
