Privacy issue in using remaining license on my account for familymember's pc

Hi,

I have norton 360  with online backup installed on my computer (PC-1) and I want to use 1 of the 2 unused licenses (total 3 licenses) on my family member's computer in a different state.

Questions:

1) Would the privacy of my PC-1 will be maintained from the out-of-state computer? That is, my PC-1 also uses norton online backup etc and any of that data would not be accessible from the out-of-state computer. Since both licenses are from the same account, would the away-computer user be able to see the online backup data from my computer; Would it be able to access any other data from my PC-1?

2) My pc's norton online backup has 2GB limit and I do not want to buy a higher limit. So, I deleted several directories from backup-set so less data, only 100MB,  has to be backed up. However, when I try backup, norton software still says that there is no-space left on the online storage. Would it not remove/overwrite the directories that are not specified in my backupset anymore (my current backup set is only 100MB)?

thanks for your help in advance.

PS: posted this question initially in another 360 forum but this is probably more appropriate in the online-backup forum.

Re: Privacy issue in using remaining license on my account for familymember's pc

Hi JK12

Since it is the same license key technically all three installs would have access to the data. I have to check into this a little further though to be absolutely certain. Once I have a definitive answer I'll add the info to the thread.

As for the second question send me a private message containing your Norton account email address requesting me to have your account used quota checked.

Hi JK12

I have some clarification on the first item. My initial posting is indeed correct. If the license being used is same then data can be backed up and accessed from the out-of-state computer.

The good news is there is a way to block the access. They can use the option to password protect the settings within Norton 360, then disable the backup. That way the out-of-state PC user cannot access any settings including backup and restore.

Re: Privacy issue in using remaining license on my account for familymember's pc

I am able to access settings->Administrative settings->settings password protection to set the passwordl, but it only sets the password for access to settings later. It does not set the access to Norton online backup drive under password protection. My online backed up data shows as a Norton Drive in MyComputer on my PC (PC-1). the out-of-state PC of the family member will also have a NortonDrive on it. Would not they be able to see my backed data from their computer?

So, in regards with (1), it's not clear whether or not out-of-state PC will be able to access any data from my computer.

Also, I sent you a private message as requested.

thanks.

Hi JK12,

There is a way to remove the Norton Drive too. Under Settings and then Backup you'll see an option to turn it off.

Thank you for the private message. I've checked the account and the quota is showing correct. The amount purged was not large enough to get below your current overall usage.  The easiest thing to do is purge the whole data set, clean up the file selection and start with a fresh backup instead.

Re: Privacy issue in using remaining license on my account for familymember's pc

wwelty,

I am not sure I follow how setting a password as suggested maintains privacy of my PC's (PC-1) online backup from the out-of-state PC. I do not want to disable my online backup (that happens through using norton drive).

What I see is that the suggsted setting of the password is not altering anything with respect to the onlinebackup, so it's not clear to me how it'd protect priivacy from the out-of-state PC? If I did not set the passwd then would the out-state PC see my online backup (or other information)..

thanks very much in advance.

You'd apply these settings to the out of state PC at the time of install. The only other way around it is to use a different product key.
