problem with twitch desktop app

I use the Twitch Desktop app to download and update addons for World of Warcraft.  After the app is installed, it seems to work all right (but not always). However, when I reboot my PC, the executable "twitch.exe" is deleted from its subdirectory within the first few minutes.

I have put "twitch.exe," "twitchui.exe," and the entire Twitch subdirectory in the "do not scan" list.  I don't get any error messages or any messages that the file was quarantined or deleted.

I do not know if this problem has anything to do with my Norton Security.  I am just looking to see if anyone else has had this problem and was able to fix it.

Thanks

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

Hello

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum.

Please send the file to virus total to check the file.

www.virustotal.com

If it comes out as clean there, you can try sending it to Norton to see if it is a false positive.

To report a false positive, please use this link

Thanks.

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

Hello mroarty Have you added it to this list? Add to "items to exclude from auto protect, sonar and download intelligence detection".

Yes, I had added 2 file names and entire Twitch folder to that list just to be sure.

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

Do you have "twitch.exe," "twitchui.exe,"  listed as startup items on the system and is boot time protection set to aggressive?  Funny, I attempted to download the twitch app, my system freezes. No warnings, no popups, just freezes. Interesting to say the least. Follow the advice of floplot above and submit to virus total and have this analyzed for a false positive.

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

Twitch has loaded and worked just fine for the last few days.  Twitch.exe is now in the startup list in Norton.  I don't remember it being there before.  Boot time protection is set to normal.  It's not clear in your msg whether I should set it to aggressive or not.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

I would leave the boot time protection at normal since the app is behaving. Did you submit it to virustotal and get those results?

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

I submitted twitch.exe to virustotal earlier in the week and got a negative response.  Since I have no specific evidence that Norton is causing my problem, I have not submitted anything to them suggesting a false positive.  It could be Windows or another app causing my problem for all I know.  I posted here looking for possibilities or those with similar experiences.

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

When you said:

when I reboot my PC, the executable "twitch.exe" is deleted from its subdirectory within the first few minutes

That suggested to me that Norton was removing the files. And should have something within your history indicating why it was removed. Check your Norton history. Personally I wouldn't have that app executing within startup. I would remove it from the windows startup as well as Norton then allow it to try and replicate. That in itself can cause issues.

Re: problem with twitch desktop app

Sorry for the confusion.

I was not aware that there was a feature called Download Insight.  It's another example of software companies knowing what's best for me by making features I'm not interested in a default.  Windows is notorious for it.  Now I find that Norton does it too.

If a product is going to warn me about something, I want the warning to appear on my screen in real time when it happens; not somewhere in an endless list that's hidden 3 or 4 clicks away.  I don't mind logs being kept, but warnings, file deletions and quarantines should be a little more obvious.

That being said, I found some removals, quarantines, and so forth in the list back in April.  Since Twitch is working now, I have somehow, accidentally, thwarted the Insight software from doing something I don't want it to do.  If something happens to Twitch again, perhaps I'll know where to start looking.

Thanks again.
