Product Maintenance not completing in Background Tasks

I have NSBU on my Windows 7 (SP1) 64 computer.  Under the Background Tasks, the Product Maintenance has ran but has never completed.  Has anyone else had this problem?  I have ran Auto-fix which finds no problems.  Have uninstalled NSBU using NRnR and Norton Removal Tool because of unrelated problems.  But noticed that Product Maintenance still shows as running but never completing.

Would appreciate any help & also if anyone else is experiencing the same.

Re: Product Maintenance not completing in Background Tasks

That's not something I would worry about too much.  Have you tried restarting your machine?  I'm not sure how often that task runs, but perhaps it only runs once a day, so you may need to check it over the next few days and see if it has completed.

After checking it nearly every day for 1 1/2 months, it completed today approximately 12 minutes ago.  Thanks Krusty for your advice: Don't worry about it!

May never know why it did complete today or why it didn't for so long.  Just glad it did!  Thanks for responding!

Glad to hear it did finally complete, but I was not aware it hadn't for 6 weeks.  I may of suggested we dig a little deeper in that case.  Anyhoo, back to not worrying.

Re: Product Maintenance not completing in Background Tasks

It might explain why we have a blackscreen Task Host is waiting for something to shut down when we try to log off Dottie's desktop or to shut down from it. The only way we can get to go to bed is to Force the shutdown with the provided button "which may result in you losing data".

I did check back Scan history today and saw that a Full Scan had not been run since some time in May so I forced that to run manually on the main, OS drive. Will see tonight if that makes any difference.

At shutdown it is at night because normally we only shutdown overnight.

Sometime during the day one website via IE will not fill completely leaving a white screen except for the frame; it's one which is heavily accessed for the live webcams on it. That's when we do the Log Off during the daytime and the blackscreen refusal might reflect Norton working on a Full Scan. OTH Setting Silent Mode does not seem to help although I've had a Norton Popup on completing a background task despite being in Silent Mode ....

This is Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32 bit fully uptodate with Windows Update except for 7 Optionals and with GWX-CP blocking the Windows 10 forced upgrade.

Re: Product Maintenance not completing in Background Tasks

Hugh, that might be IE not shutting down.  Next time you see IE giving you the white screen try killing IE in Task Manager before shutting down.

Re: Product Maintenance not completing in Background Tasks

Thanks K

I'll do that next time when shutting down although the white screen can happen at any time on Dottie's desktop; rarely on mine; and it is associated with a website heavily burdened with video up and downloads.

But you are right that the nighttime shutdown usually follows a final visit to those sites so I'll check that out. I'm fairly certain that when I have had the problem and it has not gone to the blackscreen when I can't check task manager I've seen one or even two instances of iexplore running in Task Manager.

Unless that draws a blank I'll continue in Tech Outpost as a non-Norton problem.
