QUICK SCAN APPEARS FROZEN

Before I do anything else, I confess to being an impatient technophobe. Whenever I get any kind

of error message, my default response is "Explain precise nature of error, and tell me how to fix

it", to which, of course, I never get an answer.

I am being told to run a virus/spyware scan, but when I started a quick scan nothing happened. I

logged out for a while, and when I logged back in, the message box said "Fix Complete", but

although the quick scan was "Already Running", nothing was happening, and I am still being told

I need to run a scan. Is this another manifestation of the ongoing security glitch?

Thanks for your help. At 65, I'm too old for all this. Legal and professional jargon

I can construe without difficulty, but IT-speak.... As my children say, "Dad, all

you want [that is to say, can handle] is a typewriter with a screen."

Having the same problem.   Updated Antivirus program yesterday.   Looks like a bug in the new version of Antivirus. (22.5.0.124 for Windows Vista).  It is not recognizing when quickscan gets completed and continually thinks scan is required.  Interesting because the history log shows that quickscan was completed.  Hopefully will be debugged soon.

Re: QUICK SCAN APPEARS FROZEN

I updated my video adapter driver and turned off Fast Startup and then ran a Quick Scan,

which worked properly. It seems Fast Startup can disrupt and freeze Norton scans.

Re: QUICK SCAN APPEARS FROZEN

So when is Symantec going to fix this issue with fast startup and Norton. Don't reply to me blaming Microsoft and saying it's their issue. It's just going to get worse when Windows 10 comes out. A lot of other programs are able to write to the hiberfil.sys without having issues.

"If you shut down the PC from the WIN+X menu, Windows will perform a full shutdown instead of a hybrid shutdown even if you have fast startup turned on."

^^So maybe instead of telling everyone to turn off fast startup and increasing their start up time. It'd be a good idea to recommend pressing Windows key+X (right clicking the Start button) and shutting down from there when users have issues.

By the way Vista doesn't have fast startup.

Are you sure about WIN+X ...?

I've also read that same explanation on a different site. So I don't really have any reason to doubt it's truth.

I hear ya'.  Just curious whether WIN+X full shutdown works on your W8.1...   Thanks

Re: QUICK SCAN APPEARS FROZEN

I guess with Windows 10 since the charm bar is removed. Fast startup 'shutdown' will be from the start menu and full shutdown will still be Win+X, Shut down or sign out.

Re: QUICK SCAN APPEARS FROZEN

Yeah, I was asking about WIN+X full shutdown on W8.1
I read there was an update some time back that changed all keyboard to be under the influence of Fast Startup.
So, by read only Restart and cmd line are immune from Fast Startup influence.
That's why I asked whether WIN+X full shutdown works on your W8.1...   Thanks

Re: QUICK SCAN APPEARS FROZEN

FWIW

Using Windows Server 2012, the interface has a Start Button which when right clicked gives a Shut Down and Restart options, that does fully shut down the system. As shown by the fact that the dual boot start screen comes up.

I'm fairly sure the Server 2012 is using the Win 8 UI>
