Replacement for Identity Safe?

I askjed this in another thread, but that was mainly about complaints concerning ID Safe and FF never being compatible. This is my original question:

It seems like a way to avoid the browser/ID Safe issue is to just use another password package that is not tied to which browser you use.

Has anyone used a third party password package like LastPass as a replacement? If so, is it good, reliable, easy to use?

Thanks.

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

Yeah, I'm about to give 1Password a try.

I'm giving up on Identity Safe.  I really like it when it works, and I like that it's a free component that's nicely integrated with my Norton security software.  But this latest episode is the last straw. There have just been WAY too many times where I find myself suddenly unable to log on to important sites because some new update somewhere has rendered Identity Safe incompatible with my browser.*  True, I can open the vault in my phone and look up the password I need, but that PITA completely defeats a key purpose of using a password manager- convenience.

Once I get everything securely migrated over to 1Password, I'm deleting my I.S. vault.  I might check back in a year or two to see if it's better-supported, but if a paid application is more stable and reliable, I'm probably just going to go that route.

* It also appears that there will be no effort to make I.S. work with Microsoft Edge....a significant limitation for those of us who are interested in giving Edge a fair shake.

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

Will the FREE versions of LastPass and/or 1Password let me access the vault on several HOME systems? Will it work between a Windows PC and an Android Smartphone?

brodyboy, why 1password? Did you look at LastPass?

If you require a solution that addresses both password as well as forms management and gives you choices as to cloud or non-cloud data sharing between your devices, check out Roboform:

Thanks for the ideas. I will give 1password and Roboform a try. I tried LastPass some time back, and I cannot recall why now, but it didn't work out for me. Maybe too much overhead om my lame PC, or the file was stored in the cloud. Can't remember. Anyway, thanks.

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

Yes I am very interested in an alternative as well and it is tbh long overdue.

There are always problems with tech and pc's including compatibility issues especially when Mozilla is pumping out new version of FF constantly..however the two companies seem to be on different pages and time schedules when it comes to integration and compatibility and timing and it does not just relate to FF and Norton.. other browsers as well.

I could list a handful of issues with IS but they've been listed over and over and this latest debacle has just been absurd. Roll back, use different browser.. this is working, now it's not.. now it works on this version, now you can't use any of FF, etc.

I honestly do not understand why they are even supporting IS anymore and it isn't phased out especially with no Edge support on the books.  The customer service for Norton is an utter fail as well via phone or chat.  Also, sick and tired of Firefox while we're at it so it's time to migrate to Chrome.  Seems every other version is an absurd resource hog and the latest version just grinds to a halt or my addons are incompatible until a future update.

Replacement for identity safe?  After the latest Norton/FF debacle, I've rolled back about 20 years and am relying on a good memory and post-it notes. It's about as reliable and secure as identity safe has been lately.

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

@MPSAN-

To be perfectly honest, I can't remember exactly what it was that steered me from LastPass.  I read a ton of those "Best Password Manager" kind of articles, and almost all of them came down to LastPass and 1Password as the top two choices.  There were some minor things that fell into 1Password's "plus" column, like better support, UI, and so on, but it seems like there was a particular LastPass deal-breaker for me and, yet, I can't recall what that was.  Finally, although it's cheaper than 1Password, LastPass uses a subscription pricing model, which I don't like.  1Password is a one-time license fee, with optional upgrade fees for major updates later on.

General: I've been using 1Password for about a week and I've got to say, it really blows Identity Safe out of the water! I exported my I.S. vault as a .csv file, then imported that into 1Password to begin the setup.  Organizing and cleaning up my logins/PWs is so much easier in 1Password due to its convenient UI and, probably, because it's working on the local computer rather than syncing with remote servers.  In fact, depending on your home network setup and usage requirements, you never have to let your vault info out of your local control.  You can set a network location for your vault files...in my case, I put it on my NAS...then 1Password on all your computers can be set to sync with that location.  It also backs up onto each computer, so unlike with I.S., I feel confident that my passwords will always be easily available.  So to answer your specific question...yes, it works very nicely across several home computers.  If you don't have an "always on" location available on your network, you would probably want to use the DropBox option for syncing.

Browser extensions: I really like that its browser extensions don't require a space-hogging menu bar, like Identity Safe does.  I haven't used it through any big FF updates yet, so I have yet to see how smoothly that goes....fingers crossed.  Edge doesn't accommodate extensions yet, but it appears that 1Password is committed to support it as soon as that option's available.

Mobile apps: 1Password has mobile apps for all platforms, and it seems to work nicely on my iPhone so far.  (I should say that I haven't used it extensively on my phone so I can't say I've really put the mobile app through its paces.) I haven't seen anything to suggest the Android app would be any different.

Pricing: My one big complaint about 1Password is its way-too-complicated pricing structure.  I really don't mind paying for a good password manager, especially after all my frustrations with Norton's free option.  But it seems like the obvious approach would be a one-device installation, plus a higher-priced all-devices option.  Instead, 1Password has one license fee for Windows PCs, a separate license for Macs, a bundle option for both, and then, if you want "pro" features in your mobile app, a separate $9.99 fee for that.  (As best I can tell, the "pro features" are unnecessary unless you use an Apple Watch.)  My plan is to just buy the Windows license and use the free iOS app.
Note:  The "free" version is simply a fully-functional 30-day free trial.  There's no other free version of 1Password.

All in all, I'm thrilled to be leaving Identity Safe behind.  When it worked, it was a handy application.  But I'm finding 1Password to be a much better program...better functionality, better performance, better support...all of which should be expected in a paid vs. free program.  I'm sure LastPass and other top-ranked managers are also excellent options, but I've found my solution with 1Password.

Yes, as LastPass also stores it's data in the 'cloud' just like Norton.

I've been using it in FF and it works well, does all that I want and more, even more than Norton ID Safe.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

Thank you Both. I think that Norton made an error this time that us users will not soon forget. In the past we were used to not updating FF before Norton said we can. THIS TIME they broke an old version of FF 40.0.3 that a bunch of us were using and we assumed it would be OK until Norton released the patch for FF42!

In the meantime, I have installed 64 bit Chrome and so far all is OK with IDSafe.

If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

I appreciate the advice. I like the sound of 1Password, but I can't afford $50 right now. I will try LastPass. My recollection from a long time back is that it can't handle complex logins, where the first page takes you to another for more information. But I will see. Anything but this endless digging up pieces of paper for old usernames/passwords.

Re: Replacement for Identity Safe?

I am now using the built-in Firefox password manager and interestingly find that it will do all for me thet Norton Vault did, plus a little more.  I will probably not be returning to Norton Vault.
