rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

Yesterday I bought the new WinDVD 12, I have problems playing blu ray discs which I believe is due to the rsg04.cpl file being flagged as Trojan.Gen.2, I'd like to know whether this is a false positive.

Tia,

Filename: rsg04.cpl

Probably a false positive. Worth submitting, though !  https://submit.symantec.com/false_positive/

Seemingly not unusual when connected to music/media players !

Thanks, I have tried but it's a hidden file & everytime I try to add the file or zip it I just receive a you don't have permission error, tried taking ownership but cannot do it. I may just have to get a refund.

Yes I looked at the avg threat & it does seem to be a false positive.

Hi Doctor9fan: you may take a look at "Alternatives to Corel WinDVD Pro"@ alternativeto.net/software/windvd/ after you get ayour refund.

PS:

Info & tip for newbies: learn how to customize the install of any other 3rd-party download you get from the Web. For example, unselect the extra option in WinDVD Pro 11 to avoid getting your IE "Googled".

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

I have WinDVD 11 pro on disc which doesn't offer any unwanted applications, I now have WinDVD 12 pro. I'm fully aware of unticking add-ons offered by software, I also have unchecky installed. :)

I allowed the file & nothing untoward happened. I now get the same error as with WinDVD 11 Pro (fully upto date sp7) which says it has to disable aero to play a blu ray, choosing ok does nothing, I went into Windows settings & disabled 'make toolbar transparent', still received the error.

Is the player free as can't tell from the site? Also it doesn't mention Windows 10 so don't know whether it's compatible.

You do not need WinDVD now days. if you have Windows 10 it contains everything you need. You can into the Microsoft App store also. Exactly why were needing to use WinDVD? I would get a refund. You do not need any sort of 3rd party media player or dvd player software. Windows 10 comes with grove music. You can download free apps also. If you do need a 3rd party media/dvd player I highly recommend VLC player.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

I require software which does screen grabs & where I can snip part of the video for sharing. WinDVD filled these. I found most of the players in the app store were basic & just for DVD.

Yes I will get a refund if I cannot get it to work.

If you simply Google what you are looking for you can find several free programs.I do not believe in buying any software for any pc. I get Norton free from Comcast. But you can find great deals for it on Amazon or Newegg.

VLC doesn't mention playing blu ray so not sure about that while camstudio just seems to be a screen recording software.

I am searching for alternatives, so far DAPlayer Looks good.

I CAN install and run Potplayer-64 bit on my Windows 10, error-free.

Updating your newly installed Potplayer would help you out. Then re-run Potplayer.

And... have you tried the below option:

Un-installed WinDVD and cleaned out registry. Re-installed back up to service pack 5???

Note that though, plz do not update to service pack 6 (patch 7.5) . For more help, plz visit forum.corel.com

I have WinDVD 12 it's the newest version so no updates yet. WinDVD 11 pro is a previous version which I had.

PotPlayer may work fine for DVDs or .mp4 files but I am trying to get a Blu Ray disc to play - the error I posted was when trying to play one of those. :)

By the way, neither Microsoft's app nor VLC offers direct support for Blu-ray media. There are some VLC add-ons that may work, but your better bet is to buy Blu-ray movies that come with digital versions. For the movies you already own, you may have no choice but to invest in a commercial player like Aurora Blu-ray Media Player or Macgo Windows Blu-ray Player. They cost $49.95 and $39.95, respectively. Of course, all this assumes you have a Blu-ray drive; remember that DVD drives won't play your Blu-ray discs.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

In the UK not all Blu Rays come with digital versions, I have a few which didn't - the earlier seasons of Grimm & Fringe to name two.

Yes, I've tried two different blu ray drives. I have a blu ray player connected to TV so it sounds I may have to be content with just watching blu rays at home.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

i posted a couple of links. Did you check them out? Moat people watch blue rays from a standard blue ray player hooked up to an LED tv. Are you looking to watch blue rays when away from your tv? You can buy a portable blue ray player for very cheap.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

Yes I've found a couple of possibilities but not had the chance to test the programs.

Yes I am looking to watch them while away from home. I have two blu ray drives in external cases connected to my laptop, which I've tried. Not heard of portable players other than these.

Portable Blue Ray players have been around for years. Parents use them for their children on road trips. Most newer computers do not even have a CD/ Blue Ray drive anymore. Is this the case of your pc? If so then that is probably why you are having so many issues. Your local dept store will have them. Walmart, Target, Best Buy...............

I am in the UK. The link takes me to the US site. In any case they're not what I'm looking for, screen is too small. Thanks anyway.

I will stick with looking for a replacement player for the laptop.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

How big is your laptop screen? 13" or 15"? If you are trying to accomplish this by plugging in an external blue ray player you will always have issues. External blue ray players also come with software. A portable blue ray player comes in sorts of sizes.

This is a 14".

If you look hard enough you will find what you want. Does not matter if the link I sent you was the US. Search the UK Amazon,.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

17" screen. Checked UK site the players start at £80, not worth the extra expense.
Drive I'm using is from my old laptop & is a blu ray writer as well as player, I no longer have the software. Can't fit it into my current laptop as it's slightly too big.

Thanks for everyone's help, I'm just going to get a refund of WinDVD 12 pro & just use Flixster to play the Blu Ray discs which have digital versions.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

I have used WINDVD 12 for some time now and it always worked with Norton with no problems.  About 2 weeks ago Norton started flagging a RSG04.CPL  as infected with TROJAN.GEN.8!CLOUD  any time I try to watch a  Blu Ray disk.  It appears the WINDVD 12 creates this file under C:\ProgramData\COREL\COMMON\DVD12.  Norton blocks the file from being created, leaving a empty file.  Norton then tells me is protected my computer by eliminating this file.

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

I have looked at all the postings and the only see are users of WinDVD 12 like myself with the same TROJAN.GEN.8!CLOUD issue with Norton.  Has anyone received a positive response from Norton?

Re: rsg04.cpl. Norton flags this as suspicious - is it a false positive?

It's certainly a false positive. I clean installed the Windows 10 creators update & that file hasn't been picked up again by Norton.
