Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Hi,

The Safe Site icons were there yesterday, but they have disappeared today. I haven't made any changes and they still show up in Firefox and chrome. Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Hi,

Sorry for the issue you are facing:-

1) Can you please check whether Norton Add-Ons are enabled in IE9????

From IE9 -> Click "Tools" -> Click "Manage Add-ons" and check whether they are enabled.

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Hi viveksu,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, all Norton add-ons are enabled.

I just find it odd that the icons were there yesterday but have disappeared today.

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Hi,

Can you please answer the below query:-

1) You are not seeing Safe Search icons in search results of Google.com/Yahoo.com/Bing.com or "Safe Web" Option in the Tool Bar is missing for you????

2) Can you please check whether "Enable Third-Party browser extensions" check box is enabled in IE9 -> "Options" -> "Advanced" UI.

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

1) If I search from the Google toolbar the icons do not display. If I go to bing.com and search the icons do not display. The Enable Norton Safe Web is enabled.

2) Enable third-party browser extensions is enabled.

As far as I am aware, there has been no changes to any settings since yesterday.

Can you please answer below queries:-

2) Can you please open "Settings" -> "Manage Identity Protection" and check whether all settings under "Safe Surfing" are enabled????

3) Please cross check whether you are launching IE9(iexplore.exe) from "C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Explorer" folder if you have 64-BIT Operating System.

I've just checked my other computer and the Safe Site icons do display in IE9 on it, so something must of changed with this system.

Hi Krusty13

Check to see that you haven't accidentally enabled IE9's ActiveX Filtering setting on the affected system:

  • Open IE9 > click the Tools icon (the cog) in the top right hand corner of the browser > Safety > ActiveX Filtering.

Make sure that there isn't a check mark against the ActiveX Filtering setting.

Thanks

That was the first thing I did check.

That wasn't it either.

Thanks - I thought so!

A couple of other points to check:

  1. The issue is still present after a reboot.
  2. The issue affects all Windows User Accounts on the affected PC.

Reinstalling has not helped either. I guess I will have to uninstall NU15 and N360 again, then run NRT.

Stay tuned!

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Well, I found out the hard way that after running the NRT and re-installing N360 and NU15 didn't help, but what did bring my icons back was going to Internet options > Advanced tab > Reset Internet Explorer settings.

That didn't last long!

I noticed Bing had become the default search engine and Google had disappeared from the list. I uninstalled Google Toolbar, re-installed that again and made Google the default and now the icons are missing again.

This is becoming a real PITA.

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

I am seeing erratic behavior in IE9, so it is not just you.

Sometimes the icons will load right up, other times there is as much as a 10 second delay before they appear.

All the usual suspects have been have checked.

Firefox and Chrome work as usual and no MS updates have been applied.

My previous report was for Windows 7 x64 with NIS 2012.

I just checked my XP machine which is running Comcast NSS v 20.2.019. I do not see any Safe Web icons on IE8, FF 18.0.2 or Chrome.

This must be a wider issue than just our specific machines.

So far this bug is only affecting one of my machines. Both of which are Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64.

Hi Krusty13

Some more questions:

  1. If you change the default search provider back to Bing, do the Safe Web icons reappear in your search results?

  2. Does your other machine that's working OK have the same Google Toolbar/IE9 Google search provider configuration as well?

  3. Is the Google search where no Safe Web icons appear being initiated from the IE9 Address bar?

  4. If you browse to Google normally and search from that page, do the Safe Web icons appear as expected?

  5. Phil_D: Is the Google Toolbar installed on any of your machines?

Please provide step by step instructions on how to reproduce the issue on your affected system and a screenshot of the results. This will be helpful in terms of reproducing the issue.

Thanks

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Hello elsewhere,

I do not have any toolbars except the Norton Toolbar.

To reproduce even without performing a search, navigate to news.google.com.

My windows 7 machine with IE9 is generally still experiencing a ten second lag before the overlays are displayed.

On the XP machine, I discovered that Norton Safe Web had been disabled. This was not of my doing. I have since enabled it and I get normal display times in FF 18.0.2. and Chrome, but IE 8 has the same 10 second lag as does IE9.

This may be due to a Google interaction because if I perform a search with Bing, there is no lag.

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Elsewhere,

  1. Manually changing the default search provider to Bing didn't help. Clicking Reset again may, but I will lose Google as a search provider again, although I could still search from the Google toolbar.
  2. Yes. One difference is the working system had Google toolbar installed in it's original default condition (upgraded from IE8) where the problem system (pre-installed with IE9) had Bing bar which I uninstalled after installing Google toolbar.
  3. I'm searching from Google toolbar.
  4. If I go to either google.com or bing.com and search the icons still will not display.

Thanks,

Dave

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

I just clicked Reset Internet Explorer and as I suspected, Google no longer appeared as a search provider, so I found this site where I could add Google back to the search providers.

http://www.iegallery.com/Addons/Details/813

Now when I search from Google toolbar the icons appear and I have Google as the default search engine.

I guess I can call this solved.

Phil,

I'm not seeing the 10 second delay that you are seeing.

I re-enabled the Norton Toolbar yesterday + the two ancilliary add-ons, applied the latest batch of Windows Updates for Windows 7 32 bit / IE 9, and today I see the SafeWeb icons if I search using the Searchbox as part of the Norton toolbar but I don't see them if I search using the Google toolbar search box which is my default ....

Could Google toolbar cause the problem? Try uninstalling Google toolbar and re-check.

Hi WLP,

That could be possible but IE9 is configured the same on my other system and I'm not having this issue on it. The SafeWeb icons are back again, so I'll leave things as they are for now.

Thanks Krusty13

Did you reset IE9 again to get the Safe Web icons back? Incidentally, do you have Norton Safe Search enabled on the Norton toolbar on either of your machines?

Phil_D:

With the Google News site, do you find that the page is non-responsive under IE9 until the Safe Web icons are displayed? If you watch the Google News page load using IE9's built-in developer tools, it appears that the following two URLs on this page are holding up the display of the Safe Web icons:

URLMethodResultTypeReceivedTakenInitiatorWait‎‎http: //clients1.google.com/generate_204GET(Aborted)text/html140 B47 ms8034http: //csi.gstatic.com/csi?v=3&s=news...GET(Aborted)image/gif215 B297 ms16255

It seems to be more of a Google/IE9 issue rather than a Norton issue. Do you have another site that we can test with?

Thanks

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

I'm nervous that the Safe Web icons have disappeared from Google search results on one of my laptops. The laptop runs under Windows 7 Home Premium with IE9 and N360 20.2.1.22.

I have checked the N360 settings, first switching Safe Web off, then switching it back on again, but this had no effect.

I note a similar problem was reported by Jewels52 a couple of years ago, but no solution was published. It seems the problem just went away!

The problem doesn't exist on any of my other machines.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thanks

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

The problem seems to be resolved. I ran live update and it downloaded a patch, which I assumed was related to Firefox19, but after this, the Safe Web icons re-appeared.

I note that when Norton Toolbar is enabled, IE9 doesn't provide an option to hide it so that it doesn't take up space in the browser, but Firefox does provide this option.

Do you not have a X-button on the left side of the toolbar? I have, and I can easily remove the line. An alternative method is to right-click on the toolbar and remove the check-mark in front of Norton Toolbar. The r/c method is also used to re-enable the toolbar.

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

I have the same problem of no safe site icons in IE9 Google searches.

I managed to get my lost Norton toolbar back, after searching this thread, by switching from 64-bit IE9 to 32-bit.

(Incidentally, why isn't Norton supporting the 64-bit browser?)

But the icons are not appearing in Google search results but they do if I search from Norton toolbar.

I have tried disable and re-enable of the toolbar and ran Live Update manually, all to no avail.

Is it maybe a Google problem rather than Norton? (I don't have Google toolbar enabled).

Has anyone found a remedy anywhere?

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

Today I had the same experience, no safe site icons in IE. Until I refreshed the page. Sometimes the icons are displayed after a short delay.

Firefox: There was a delay until the icons appeared.

Chrome: Opened http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en, no safe site icons. Refreshing the page did not help. If I search directly from the address line, the icons are displayed.

I really do not know where to find “the bad guy”!

Edit: And the forum site is extremely slow today. Maybe the Symantec servers are a bit overloaded?

Re: Safe Site icons have disappeared from IE9

I rely on the safe surfing icons for peace of mind when I'm surfing the web, so it's annoying that they aren't functioning as they should. In both Chrome and IE9 they are temperamental, regardless of which search engine I use.

Sometimes the icons are there and sometimes not. I can refresh the page a couple of times and they don't appear, and then I refresh again and they appear, refresh again, and they disappear etc etc. Using the back arrow in the browser affects the icons in the same way too and to add to the confusion, the search results sometimes appear with a grey icon next to them that was previously green and vice versa.

Needless to say I don't feel very safe when I'm surfing.
