Safe Web blocking oldergeeks.com

For the last few days, Safe Web has blocked access to www.oldergeeks.com, a site I have used without problems for a year or so to get freeware. The message is that the site is unsafe, with 1 computer threat. I am not sure how Norton decides that there is a problem with the site, but I am reluctant to over-ride and visit the site. Is it possible for you to verify if there is a legitimate issue. This happens whether I use Chrome or IE11 browser. I am running Win 7 Pro.

Re: Safe Web blocking oldergeeks.com

Hello TD-user

According to the Safe Web report for that website, the malware name is Password Revealer.  Here is the Symantec Description for this malware.

Do you have the name of the particular software you are looking for in this site.? Sites that offer free software in general are not usually the safest of sites. There could be one bad piece of malware and that would ruin it for the whole site. If it's actually a free software, then you are best off going to the maker of the software.

Re: Safe Web blocking oldergeeks.com

Sometimes Antivirus scanner reports that a program is infected with a Virus or Trojan, even when the program is not really infected with any malicious code. This kind of problem is known as "False Positive" or "False Alert", and it's quite a common problem in some of the password recovery tools provided in NirSoft Web site.

https://www.nirsoft.net/false_positive_report.html

IE PassView is a small utility that reveals the passwords stored by Internet Explorer Web browser. It supports all versions of Internet Explorer, from version 4.0 and up to 11.0, as well as Microsoft Edge Browser.

Re: Safe Web blocking oldergeeks.com

Thanks for the quick responses. I now realize I could have seen the offending program in the  report from Norton.

I am not surprised that the original program came from nirsoft - there a lot of useful utilities there. I have used a few of them (not any password revealer programs). I feel that I can now safely visit oldergeeks in spite of the warning, Of course, any file I download (from any site) gets scanned by NIS, and I also check the File Insight ratings.

Re: Safe Web blocking oldergeeks.com

Thank you to Norton and everyone in this thread for bringing this to our attention. We uploaded this file 6 years ago. We have since greatly improved our filtering of new files. This one, somehow, got left on the server. It has been removed and we are having the site reevaluated by Norton now. Deanna and myself (Randy) created this site for one reason, to give the world an annoyance-free freeware site. You can image how much this bothered us. We will do better.
