scan time has increased by 12x

I have had Norton Internet Security installed on my PC for 4 years.  I am running Win7, up to date with all patches.  Complete scans have typically taken 50 min to scan nearly 2,000,000 items.  Since March 17, 2018 the scan time has increased to 12 hrs to scan the same amount of files.  Occasionally the complete scan only includes 500,000 files and then the time drops to 7 min, but the following weeks it goes back to 2,000,000 files and 12-14 hrs.  I have hit the security help feature and it checks my setup and says everything is ok.  I do also have Malewarebytes on my machine and it continues to scan 600,000 files in about 2 hrs.  I have set it to exclude the Norton exe files folders.  Neither of them has found any infections on my machine.

I contacted Norton help and they said the program had been updated recently and that is why scan times increased, but they should soon get quicker.  It has been about 3 weeks since the slow down.  I usually scan 1x/week and as I said, sometimes scan times are quicker when the number of files scanned drops by 75%, but then it goes back up again.  Recently I have been scanning a few times a week to see if things would speed up. In the past, Norton always scanned 1.5 - 2 million files in under 1 hour.

Thoughts?

Do you have MBAM set to load when windows starts? If so there is a possible cause, two separate entities being "active" in the same environment. I would also check your Norton settings for compressed file scanning. Disable that setting and see if your scan times drop. Take into account the more information stored on a hard drive will drive up scan times regardless.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Sorry, that does not help.  I rebooted with auto start for MBAM turned off so it is not running.

As for compressed file scanning, see my note.  I have changed nothing in Norton and it used to scan 1,900,000 files in under an hour and now takes 12-14 hrs to scan the same 1,900,000 files.  The only times it is quicker is when for some reason it decides to scan only about 500,000 files for a complete scan and this is does in under 10 min.  This is not the way it used to behave.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Hi, elliottq. Have you gone to the main UI, and selected the Insight Scan under Security > Scans > Insight Scan ?

If not let the Running Processes Scan run and then using the drop down tab, select the ALL FILES scan.

After this has run, Norton will only scan new or changed files, so this should speed up subsequent scans.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Thank you both.  I will try the insight scan, but I never had to do that before.  And as I said, now that I am experiencing the slowed scan times, there are times when I am presuming Norton is doing something like the insight scan since it will limit the scan to about 1/4 of my files (500,000 of the 2,000,000) and do that in only 7 - 10 min.

Re the suggestion to check the hard drive, I thought of that too and did a complete check and all ok.  Besides, as I reported the MB scans still run just as quickly as they always have.

Has no one run into anything changing in the Norton scans with recent updates that has slowed the program?

PS - are they disadvantages to an Insight Scan - more likelihood of missing new infections?

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

No, as the Insight scan will save previously scanned files being scanned again, and as mentioned before, should make subsequent scans quicker over time

Also, you have layered protection with Norton's heuristic and cloud protections.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Please provide me info on how to run insight scan.  I went to Sans/Norton Insight and it said only 34% of my files need scanning, but what do I do then to make an insight scan happen.  Do I then run full, custom, or custom task?

Also, it still seems odd to me that my scans are taking 10 hrs when they never used to prior to one month ago, and my hard drive is in good condition, MBAM scans as quick as ever, sans take just as long when MBAM is disabled.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Hi,elliottq. Follow the suggestions I gave in my previous post. That will reduce the number of files needing to be scanned.

Go to the main UI, and selected the Insight Scan under Security > Scans > Insight Scan.

If not let the Running Processes Scan run and then using the drop down tab, select the ALL FILES scan.

After this has run, Norton will only scan new or changed files, so this should speed up subsequent scans.

As has also been suggested, ensure Compressed File Scans are set to OFF.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Sorry to be dim, but I don't have that option.  When I go to scans this is what I see.

Scans and Tasks: Quick, Full System, Custom Scan, and Custom Task
Norton Power Eraser: Nortn Power Eraser
Norton Insight-Norton Insight
DIagnostic Report-Diagnostic Report

If I select Insight it simply gives me a report; it does not run a scan.  It says that only about 30% of my files need scanning, but I don't see how to make that type of scan happen.

If you read my notes above, sometimes Norton does run a scan and only scans about 500,000 files in 7 min, but most times it does 2,000,000 in 10-12 Hrs.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Hello

Keep looking below Scans. Look where I have the blue dot and click on that circle to place your blue dot there. To the left of that, you will see Norton Insight. On the bottom, you will see Go and click on that.

On the Insight Scan page, run the first 2 scans listed on the dropdown.

Have a Nice Day and

Thanks.

EDIT: The report you see is after the scan has run. There is a dropdown, click on the All Files. It will run the scan and give you another report. Then you can close up those pages.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Ah, I didn't realize that was the scan.  How does it report back infections or make quarantines?  Are they just brought to the top of the list?  It is quicker and does give me the option for a quicker scan, but still does not explain what happened with either Norton or my PC that changes the full-scan times from 1 hr to 12 hrs.  Do you think I should try an uninstall/reinstall or is that dicey with an antivirus product?

Hello

The Norton Full System Scans find and quarantine malware that it finds.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Elliott, try our suggestions first and after the Insight Scans have completed, reboot and run a Full Scan.

If no improvement we can look and a reinstall, which is simple to do.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Still confused about the Insight scan.  Apparently it just scans and tells Norton what to check on next pass?  Correct?

Anyway I ran the Insight scan.  It said about 30% of files needed scanning.  After reboot it again scanned all 2MM files and took 12 hrs.  As I said, occasionally in the past month the full scan has only scanned about 500,000 files in less than 10 min.  Do you think my Norton software has become corrupted?  When I run the diagnostic tool before getting support it says it finds no issues.

Thoughts?  Thank you.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

If a full scan was ONLY checking 500k files and a full scan is now checking the entire contents of files something is definitely NOT right. As F4E previously suggested perform a remove and reinstall using this article: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us

Let us know your results if you'd be so kind so we may assist further if needed.

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Thank you.  I hope to do the uninstall / reinstall this weekend.  Meanwhile, please explain the Insight scan.  Are you saying that I run that scan and then thereafter when I run a Full System Scan it automatically just scans the files that insight says need attention?  If so, how would you change the Full System Scan to go back to truly scan all files if you wanted to at some future time?

Also, this all begs the question of why my Full System Scans of 2MM files used to take 1 hr and now take 12 hr.  Do you think that having ruled out hard drive problems and interaction with Malwarebytes, that a Norton program corruption is the likely culprit?

Re: scan time has increased by 12x

Here is some official info on Norton Insight scans: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v15472458_ns_retail_en_us

Corruption in your Norton install is POSSIBLE but its not always the case. The software installed on your system and WHERE its installed makes a difference on Windows 7 especially. IE; most software wants to install to C:\Program Files\ by default. I NEVER allowed that to happen on Win 7 and still don't on Win 10. I create a folder of its own in the C:\ root . Run the insight scan BEFORE doing a destructive R&R. Then reboot and do a full system scan. See if you get a better scan time.
