Security warnings during & after installation, Norton crashes

Hi there,

I have been receiving eleven security warnings titled "intrusion attempt by api.opencandy.com was blocked" since I installed the newest version of the VDSC video editor (I downloaded the setup from the official website). I know that Open Candy is some type of malware, nevertheless, Norton's reaction was somewhat excessive. Throughout the installation, warnings popped up urging me to use Norton Eraser. I ignored them, having had similar issues evey time I tried to install the video editor. Strangely, the warnings continued long after the installation was finished. As suggested by Norton, I finally used the Eraser tool. It didn't find anything. Aditionally, Norton crashed when I tried to open the security history. I suppose the problem lies with Norton, but I am not really sure what to make of this. Is there anything I should do in response to these security warnings? Or is this simply another instance of Norton overreacting?

Thank you very much for your help!

Re: Security warnings during & after installation, Norton crashes

It could help others to help you if you could give some basic background information please:

To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.

If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal retail version please be sure to tell us.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful. [Yes this is boilerplate so I know you gave some background on what happened but .....]

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

Re: Security warnings during & after installation, Norton crashes

Hello Dawid

I would suggest a visit to one of the free malware removal sites. Open Candy is a PUP. Please don't try any of the quick fixes out in the net. Often these programs are offered with programs that you want. They usually have a place  during the installation of the product that you can check off that you don't want it.

Please pick one of these sites and stay with them until they say your computer is clean.

Please see this link for an up to date description of these sites plus the addition of a newly listed site formed by one of our successful malware remover users who unfortunately has passed away. That site is still being run by a good expert who happens to be one of the other Gurus.  The new site is listed first in this link.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. If after your computer is cleaned up, Norton doesn't work well, we can help you with uninstalling and reinstalling the program.

Thanks.

Re: Security warnings during & after installation, Norton crashes

Thank you all for the quick replies. After a restart, the security history is accessible again without any problems. All entries in the security history concerning Open Candy look exactly like the screenshots bjm_ posted. And since Norton tells me that no action is required I suppose I don't have to do anything about it, right?

I am running Windows 10 64Bit. The product name is Norton Security (bought in 2015, regular retail version).

Norton Version:
22.6.0.142

Browser:

Firefox 46.0.1

Hello

Here is what Wikipedia has to say about OpenCandy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCandy

If there is excessive outbound traffic detected, I would recommend a visit to one of the recommended free sites. If you don't have malware on your computer, then you will have peace of mind knowing the computer is clean for now.

Thanks.
