Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

Suddenly, with the new version of Internet Explorer 11, the Site Rating Icons don’t show up on Google, Bing, or Ask.  I tried the previous work around of changing the settings for my Search Results on those individual sites to NO instant results, but I’m still getting no Norton Site Rating Icons at all.  Can anyone help me with this?

Hi Rubybear9,and welcome. In Google for instance, if you go to the settings tab bottom right of the Google home page, click on search settings, and check never show instant results.

That should restore your Norton icons in search...

As I mentioned in my original post, that is exactly what I did on Google, and I am still not getting the Norton icons.

My bad, sorry. Have you checked in Tools and addons in the browser to check that the Norton add on is enabled ?

Also that in IE 11 that Enhanced Protected Mode is disabled, and Smart Filter, as well ?

There have been some incompatibilities with IE 11.

Edit--- I just checked, and not working for me either, atm. They were previously...

Hi Rubybear9

I just checked chrome and firefox and there is no safe search icon but there is if you use the Norton toolbar search box.

This happens from time to time and as you have posted Norton monitors the forum so should check it and deal with it.

I did check in the addons, and Norton is enabled.  I just turned off the Smart Filter on IE 11.  Where do I find the settings for Enhanced Protected Mode?  Can't seem to find that.

Yeah, this just started with the automatic update to IE 11.  Drat...

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

Go to Tools/Internet Options, in the IE 11 menu. Go to Advanced, and uncheck EPM if it is enabled.

Microsoft recently brough out a patch to disable it, so I suspect we have a way to go, before IE is fully compatible.

Last resort if it's bothering you,is to uninstall IE 11 in programs via Control Panel, and re-download IE 10, from the M/S site.

I'm considering this, if it's not fixed.....

Well, I’ll keep checking over the next few days, and see if Norton fixes the problem for us.  Thanks for the replies, I hope we can safely search again soon!

@ intesec – my Norton toolbar doesn’t have a search box.  How does that work?

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

Rubybear9, if you have your Toolbar with the vault tab showing, you can open the vault, and go to the settings cog at the bottom where when the options come up you can tick in Safe Search, and it will appear in the Tool Bar. Click on the General tab.

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

Hi Rubybear9,

Just curious which Norton product you are running.  What F4E said about the Options setting on the Genral Tab is true for NIS 21.1.0.18, but I have had some queries about that very option not being present in N 360 v 21.1.0.18.

Can someone running N 360 verify that?

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

I see that Norton has decided to move my question to Norton Toolbar/Identity Safe forum.  I don't see what the Site Adviser Icons on search engine results have anything to do with those products.

As of today, the Site Adviser Icons are still not working for any search engine that I go on.  The main reason I purchased Norton Internet Security is because they were the only company that gave me those Site Adviser warnings on search results BEFORE I went to a website.  Without those icons, I might as well go back to my free Avast anti-virus company.

Is someone from Norton going to actually check into this issue and send out a fix for it?  I am in the middle of trying to research something, and I'm afraid to go onto any of the unknown websites in my search results, so I'm dead in the water.

I have NIS Version 20.4.0.40.  I have Windows 7.

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

My apologies to Norton.  I used the term Site Advisor, which I think is a McAfee product.  However, the term Site Rating Icons is the appropriate term, as I see that in my Norton web settings.

I have discovered other posts as far back as November 14 describing this exact problem for everyone who has updated to IE11.  Why hasn't Norton found a fix for this?

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

This issue most likely arises from the updated Document rendering method used by IE11.  You can verify if this is your problem by doing the following four steps:

1) First - use one of the supported search engines (i.e. Google) to display a search results page.

2) While the page is displayed (without the Norton Safety indicators showing) press F12 to open IE11's Developer Tools pane.

3) Press Ctrl-8 to jump to the Emulation pane.

4) Change Document mode from "Edge (Default)" to "10"  (this tells IE11 to temporarily emulate IE10).

Did the Norton icons suddenly appear?

If yes, then you are using a version of Norton NTB other than v21, which is currently the only version of NTB that supports IE11 in this regard.

FWIW, using the Norton Safe Search box does work because the Norton Search site sends the code to tell your IE11 browser to emulate IE9.

Kind regards,

John

Hi, John. Fwiw, I'm now having the same problem. Fine when I first downloaded IE 11, but now no icons.

None of the fixes stick, and I even downgraded to IE 10. Same problem. Seems to be a toolbar fix, that's needed.

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

Hmm - Well until recently it used to work with v21, but I guess that too has since been "fixed" by what I'll assume was a "recent update"...

Until about a week ago I still had NIS v21 on one last system that I'd relegated several months ago as a "v21 litmus test" in hopes of it eventually receiving a LiveUpdate that would make it workable again, like it had been with v20 - but after months of waiting I finally gave up and reverted it back to v20.

Now absent a system with v21 from which to draw on for information,  I'll not comment further about what used to work.

Kind regards,

John

Edit:  FWIW; The test I posted in my earlier reply is simply that - a test (as Microsoft intended).  The Developer Mode is a session only tool and any changes made with it cannot be made to "Stick" after the browser is closed or a new tab is utilized.

@ avjohnnie -

As you can see from a previous post from me, I still have NIS v20, and the icons don't show for me.  So not sure if it's a v20 or v21 issue.  I was actually hoping once Live Update phased me into v21, the issue would go away, but I can see from others that this is not the case.

Norton, is anyone out there working on this for us??

No, I have no search box.  Perhaps because I only have NIS, and not Norton 360?

hello

I am using NIS with the latest version 21 and have windows 7 pro. I am using IE 10 though and have not tried IE 11 yet. The search bar is there and so are the Norton safe site icons in Google Search site. I did just install version 21 this past weekend and so far the icons are there.. I am just trying to verify that the icons are there with IE 10 and with NIS 21.1.0.18. Please make sure that you have all the  updates and you could also try rebooting your computer and then checking for updates again..

Hi Rubybear9,

Please see the following image - I believe it is from V 20.4..0.40 which you say you are running.  You will notice a small down arrow behind the Norton Icon - which gives you the drop down menu.  Click on Enable Norton Safe Search and the Safe Search box should appear on your NTB.  Let us know if this helps.

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

Hi Rubybear9;

The issue was due to IE11's new way of displaying web pages which is called "Edge".  At one point upgrading to v21 fixed the safeweb icon display problem, but there have since been report(s), like F4E's, indicating that this is no longer the case.  I can confirm that Norton icons do not (at present) display in IE11 if you're using v20.  This will most likely remain the situation unless Norton decides to release a v20 NTB update for IE11 compatibility (on this regard) - but do note that (to the best of my knowledge, at this point) the safe icon display issue is the only issue v20's NTB currently has with IE11 - all other aspects of the v20 NTB work as expected with all variants of IE11.

Regarding your not seeing the Norton search box on the v20 NTB...

Working from the image of the v20 NTB in Yank's previous post; If you click the "Norton Safe Search" in the Norton menu, it should enable Safe Search box on the v20 NTB.

BTW; The Norton Safe Search (also available at: http://nortonsafe.search.ask.com/) uses the "Ask" web search engine, but unlike when using the main Ask Search Site, the Norton sub-site sends the code that directs IE11 to show the results page using IE9 display mode rather than IE11 new default Edge mode.

Kind regards,

John

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

I did closely look at the drop down menu on Yank's post, but for some reason the option "Enable Safe Search" isn't there on my drop down menu.  The "Enable Norton Safe Web" is there, and that is and has always been enabled on my menu.

However, thank you for the nortonsafe.search.ask.com link.  I clicked on it, did a search for something, and YES, the icons do show up there!  It's been so long since I've seen them!  I saved that search link to my favorites, and I guess I will just use that site to search from until Norton gets its act together.

I will not be renewing my Norton product next year if they don't figure out how to make their product work smoothly with all search engines in IE11.  Sort of ridiculous, for what I'm paying.

Anyway, thanks guys, for the temporary fix anyway.

Hello

The site ratings do work with IE 10 NIS 21.1.0.18 win 7 pro 64 bit while using Google. Perhaps trying out IE 11 and then reverting  back to IE 10 might ruin something. If that is the csse, have you tried reverting back the managed addons or checking them out?

Fortunately, IE is purely a back up....

Re: Site Rating Icons no longer work with IE 11

I have to agree with floplot, Norton Safe Search Icons do work for me in IE 10 and I did go to IE 11 for a short period of time, was unimpressed as a few of the tech sites I frequent did not work correctly and then went  back to IE 10.  So it doesn't appear to make any difference if you go to 11 and then back to 10.  I am on Win 7 SP1 64 bit with NIS v 21.1.0.18.

FWIW, the Safe Search Icones also work on my FF 25.0.1.

Thanks floplot, and yank. I imagine eventually the icons will reappear, as if by magic. M/S updates due this week, so I'll wait until they're downloaded, and see what happens. Not a major deal for me, as I rarely use IE.

@Krusty13  Hi, Krusty ! I tried searching in both the address bar area in IE 11, and in the Search area in Google.com.au home page, and both times, the Norton icons weren't displayed.

However, if I search using the Norton Safe Search area in the toolbar, the Norton icons will show.

In Bing AND Yahoo they will show, all the time. It certainly seems to be a Google thing.....

Has anyone had any success having the icons show since the Windows Update today?  For me, I see no difference, still no icons on Google (didn't check the other search sites yet).  However, I still have NIS v20.  I'm hoping that those with v21 have seen a difference.  If so, I will try to force a Norton update to v21.

Hi Rubybear. I just did as @Krusty13  suggested and used the IE  address bar to type in a request, and the Norton icons are now showing.

It also now works using Google as a home page, and using the normal search bar.
