Stand alone Identity Safe won't check for updates

My new Dell PC came with McAfee's security software and my NIS 2012/2013 is already installed on 3 PCs so I decided to "roll" with the McAfee for the first year and just install the IDS standalone so I can access my online vault. My standalone IDS tells me that the live update failed and to check my internet connection when ever I click the "check for updates" link in the "about" window. My Pc is connected to the internet with no problems. My new PC is:

Dell XPS 8500 running Windows 8 and I'm using IE 10 as my browser. I'm running the latest McAfee Security Center for my firewall/av.

Anyone have any ideas what I need to do to make these two programs behave?

Re: Stand alone Identity Safe won't check for updates

Hi sewing1243,

Please do the check for updates using Firefox. the same way you have already tried with IE.

The standalone version should update with either browser.

Please let us know how it goes.

I haven't installed Firefox on that PC yet. Still trying to get used to IE10.

You could just install FF, see if it updates the ID Safe standalone or not and then remove it.  That way you'll know if it's something that only occurs with IE 10 or all browsers.

Only other thing would be some kind of Firewall rule and I do not know anything about McAfee - excpet how to totally remove it.
