Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

The following text [italics] is what I've just sent to Norton in the Report Issue facility in the Vault tool button.  There was another issue, but I ran out of characters.  I've added it to the bottom.

There have been two issues, but I don't know if they were related because I didn't check at the time.

1.  The normal Vault button options when I go into Firefox are Vault Closed or Vault Open, if I've just been out/back into Firefox.  On a few occasions (nothing in last 24 hours) there's been a different appearance of the Vault button, like a set up option?

2. There have been a few occasions when the Norton Safe Search function hasn't worked.  I just got the Ask page saying try again.

3.  I normally click on the Vault button (once signed in) to select the sites I use often.  I've noticed over the last  few days that there are logins appearing in the drop down list for sites that I haven't visited.  This has included two logins for financial sites, so has me a bit worried.   Can anybody think why this could be happening?

Thanks,

Ian

PS - as an aside, I looked for the topic on the search bar and got a load of threads.  This is fine, but adding dates would be a helpful addition next time a system update's considered.  Just thought I'd mention it.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

Hi Iancol,

Sorry for the issue you are facing,

When you see "setup vault " instead of vault closed,  it means Norton account and vault is logged out automatically. This might happen if there is any issue in backend server.

Now click on setup vault and log into Norton account then log into vault.

Let us know how it goes?

Thanks,

Senthil.

Hi Senthill,

Thanks.  I'll have to wait until/if it happens again and this time, I'llmake careful note of what I see, then report back.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

Hi again,

No further incidents with the search box or format of the vault icon, but attached is a sample of the spurious entries in the vault drop down list.

The top of the page shows a screen dump of the drop down menu with a line for a site I haven't visited recently.

I clicked on this link and got the next part of the page, the log in page for the site.

I clicked on this and got the bottom part, a page from a thread in which my login name appears as a quote in somebody else's post.  Check out the  dates.

I logged on to the site using my bookmarks and behind he log in screen was the forum home page, ie it behaved differently, but as normally happens.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

It's happened again.  For background, I normally leave the computer on all day, hibernating when not in use, then switch off overnight, leaving just the router powered up.

Normally, when I switch on in the morning and load Firefox, I get the "Vault Closed" icon in the Norton toolbar.  Yesterday, the icon said "Setup Vault", but had the same effect - clicking on it brought up the "Enter Password" local vault screen.

Before I hit this, I checked whether the Norton Safe Search function was working - it was.

During the day, every time I went back to the PC, the icon said "Vault Closed", as usual.

This morning, when I wnet on to FF, the icon said "Vault Closed".  So, the question is, why did it show "Setup Vault" yesterday?

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

It's happened again - I clicked on the Vault Open icon after the PC had been in use for some time and there was another unwanted link, to a financial site I haven't looked at recently.  I'm waiting for Norton to follow up the original query, but it's a bit worrying that, with Identity Safe open, the only thing between a possible intruder and my account is my birthdate.

The dropdown list contains not just most recently visited sites, but also most often visited sites, so it is normal that a site you have visited frequently, although not recently, might appear in the list.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

Hi, thanks for that.  I'm afraid it isn't that.  It's a site I've used a very few times, and not recently.

As far as I can see, the list works like the Recent Documents list in OpenOffice, etc, except eight, not ten lines, with the most recently opened at the top, being replaced by those later used, in  order of use.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

Yesterday morning, when I went on line I noticed that the "Setup Vault" icon was showing, quickly replaced by "Vault Closed" without me touching anything.

This morning, it started the same way but the icon didn't change till I clicked on it, when it went straight to the local sign on screen.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

It gets worse.  I started up this morning and no Norton Toolbar.  Not showing in the drop down menu.  Shown as enabled in the add-ons list.  Still not there after several disable/restart/enable/restart ops.  Going into Norton and opening up the log ins screen, it accepted my password but the log in list was empty.

I'll look elsewhere for restoring the logins from a back up, but ...

UPDATE - when I looked at the topics list I saw a link to Firefox 19 Support for Norton Toolbar.  I clicked on Help/about in Firefox and a download of V.19 started.  On restart, the toolbar was back.  End of (this one anyway) crisis.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

I know nothing's happening on this thread, but I'm leaving it open because I'm awaiting an official response from Norton to the originally-raised issue.  I'll report back when I eventually get it.

Re: Strange behaviour on Norton Toolbar

I've had notification from Symantec that the query I raised has been dealt with via version updates, so I've marked this as closed.
