Symantec Symcinstall is Denied (Bug)

I use Norton Security with Backup 22.10.0.85. I also use Veritas System recovery 16. I had no problems in the past installing Veritas. I tried to do an upgrade and also tried to uninstall the older version and this is the message that I get. The install failed with an unexpected error:Access to the registry key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symcinstall' is denied. After countless days of testing if I uninstall Norton Security with Backup Veritas loads fine. Then I reinstall Norton Security with Backup. Has anyone ever heard of this before. Looks like Norton Security has changed or blocked the permissions in the registry.

Thanks @Harley55. I hadn't heard of that before - how did that get solved for you?

Re: Symantec Symcinstall is Denied (Bug)

I got on a support chat with Norton Security and they made it very simple. This problem only surfaced in the last few releases of Norton Security with Backup. Disable Smart Firewall, Disable Auto Protect, Disable Tamper Protection. Then it would let you install or upgrade Veritas System Recovery 16. You can't uninstall Veritas unless you do this. After I turned everything back on the program works fine it only stopped  me from installing and uninstalling.

Re: Symantec Symcinstall is Denied (Bug)

I had this same problem last week when I was uninstalling Symantec System Recovery 2013 R2 to upgrade to Veritas System Recovery 16.  This is seen with either program (since both are the same, just different branding).  I only had to disable the Norton Tamper Protection and then ran the uninstaller for SSR 2013 R2 and everything was OK and kept the Tamper Protection off so I can install Veritas System Recovery 16.  This is the first time I have seen this as in years past I would always install Norton Ghost or SSR 2013 R2 or now, VSR 16, first and then Norton Security.

Re: Symantec Symcinstall is Denied (Bug)

For some reason Norton Security has blocked the Symantec Registry from tampering. Both these program use that registry to install or uninstall Symantec software. Not sure way the change it just created a big headache for me. I spent days trying to figure out where the problem was.

Disabling Tamper Protection in Norton Internet Security solved it for me as well. I spent days trying to figure this out. Thank you!
