SymPlatform Definitions?

Hello

What are SymPlatform Definitions? I don't remember ever getting those before. They were downloaded to me on Wednesday night EST.  Windows 7 Pro Norton Security with Backup 22.16.2.22

Re: SymPlatform Definitions?

Hi floplot:

It looks like you posted about these definitions back in August 2018 in Brocktoon's thread New Type of Def Files - SymPlatform Definitions?.  The only (useless ) feedback Guru Krusty13 received at that time was "Norton SymPlatform Definitions are newly released definitions to further enhance system security".

I use Norton v22.15.1.8 (released 13-Sep-2018) on a Vista SP2 machine so my definition set 20181026.054 and file versions might be a different from yours, but the main .DLL library speng32.dll at C:\Program Files\Norton Security with Backup\NortonData\22.9.1.12\Definitions\SymPlatformDefs\20181026.054 is described as the Symantec Platform Component Library.  The term "platform component library" I'm most familiar with relates to reusable components that can be added or removed from application interfaces (GUIs) - see the Bits and Pieces blog Building a Shared UI Component Library for an overview.  Symantec might use the term "platform component library" in a completely different context (for example, I don't know why they would call them definition updates if this has anything to do with the Single Layout interface design introduced in Norton v22.12.0) but it might be related to some sort of modular design where different functions and features like Norton Backup are activated/deactivated depending on your Norton product name and version and/or Windows OS.

That's complete speculation on my part, though.  Perhaps Norton will be willing to provide further details to one of the forum Gurus.

EDIT:

..and further to my previous comments, these modular components could even be related to targeted advertising pop-ups or the forced beta-testing program Norton is rolling out.  Recall LinYu2's thread What is Norton Lifelock? about being one of the "lucky" few who were randomly selected to beta-test the Norton SafeCam feature.  I imagine forced beta-testers like LinYu2 would be receiving additional definition sets that other "regular" v22.16.2.22 users don't require.

Re: SymPlatform Definitions?

All: Not being able to show a reference, I was of the understanding that these new definitions were in preparation for the Windows 10 October update or RS5. I think I deleted the PM in that regard cleaning out messages last week. My thoughts were (at the time) Norton SymPlatform would detect the RS5 security settings, at the same time remain hardened for all other OS's versions / Norton versions concurrently.

Cheers

Re: SymPlatform Definitions?

Hello

I seem to have a folder called SymPlatform, but I didn't see any definitions in there. I also see SymPlarform Defs listed in the Definitions folder. It seems to be a lot of information, but what is it for? Is this in preparation for the new versions that are or have come out instead of Norton Security?

Old brain does sometimes forget some things.

Thanks.

Re: SymPlatform Definitions?

Bump.

Does anyone have any further information on what these SymPlatform Definitions are used for beyond the vague "Norton SymPlatform Definitions are newly released definitions to further enhance system security" that Krusty13 was told in August 2018?  I'm just as curious as floplot and wonder if one of the Gurus might be able to pry a definitive explanation out of their contacts at Norton.

I checked today and noticed I eventually received the v20181212.052 definitions (stored in C:\Program Files\Norton Security with Backup\NortonData\22.9.1.12\Definitions\SymPlatformDefs\20181212.052) on 14-Dec-2018 that floplot was probably referring to, so I'm still not sure if "platform component" refers preparation for an upcoming Windows 10 update or preparation for an upcoming Norton update.  Either way, it seems odd I'm still getting these platform component updates because I have a Vista SP2 computer and Norton has been in maintenance mode for Win XP and Vista (i.e., no further feature updates or new product capabilities) since September 2018.

Re: SymPlatform Definitions?

Hi everyone,

SymPlatform is a framework component within the Norton product used to support and deliver many of the features within the product. It is currently being pre-seeded to existing products to create the foundation and to allow Symantec seamlessly and rapidly deliver protection features in upcoming versions of the product.
