threat Boot.malmo is not removed

Threat Boot.Malmo is repeatedly popping up with information that Remove Failed. Tried to exclude but this also failed. Tried Norton Power Erase without any success in removing this. Tried Malwarebyte free edition but this also could not remove this. What could be likely solution to either remove this pop up or delete this threat. Could anyone advise?

Re: threat Boot.malmo is not removed

Hello Animish. When you ran Malwarebytes did you select it to quarantine any threats found? Have you looked in quarantine for the threat and selected remove? If so and nothing is there, download this small tool named Rkill to your desktop. Run the program, it will detect and stop all malicious processes it detects. If it finds the threat you are having and stops its process it will inform you that you can them run your A/V or malware program to remove the threat. Let us know if this helps.

Re: threat Boot.malmo is not removed

Wondering if the OP had some idea they were infected, installed Norton to rid the threat? Trying to cover all the bases. Another user appears to have had this same issue some time ago as posted in this thread and never got a resolution. Delphinium  has a recommendation from 2011 in this thread as well. From a CLEAN computer the OP may want to download and try using the NBRT tool

Cheers

Re: threat Boot.malmo is not removed

Hi Sunil_GA,

Response to your query:

- Norton Security installed version :    22.19.8.65

- Operating System:      Windows 7 professional

- Norton Virus definitions updated to latest? Please run LiveUpdate to receive latest definitions.: Updated to latest

- Can you please export alert results and upload it this post?: Report as follows

Resolved Threats:
No risks have been resolved

Unresolved Threats:
Boot.Malmo
 Type: Master Boot Record
Risk: High (High Stealth, High Removal, High Performance, High Privacy)
 Categories: Virus
 Status: Exclude failed
 -----------
 1 System Action
Drive 0x81 - Infected

- Have you tried system restart and scan again with latest virus definitions? Yes

Norton Support Site suggests running of NPE, which I did but of no use. It further suggests that in such case this needs to be removed manually / update corrupt system file. I don't know how to identify / locate the infected file and why Norton feels this can be done by all computer users?

Tried Malwarebyte free edition with Rootkit scanning. It gave following result:

"Physical Sector: 1
Bootkit.Malmo.MBR, 0, Replace-on-Reboot, [15762], [514093],0.0.0"

I presumed that this was removal of virus- but Norton Security continues to pop up screen of Boot.Malmo Threat detected copy attached. Is something wrong with Norton. It may be noted that I had re-installed Norton only yesterday.

One more question which comes to mind is - if Norton is unable to tackle Rootkit virus?

Re: threat Boot.malmo is not removed

Check out the Norton Virus Protection Promise.  https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v62458994    This gets you virus removal service for an infection that the regular Norton products cannot remove.

Note that you will have to enable Auto Renewal on your subscription while you wish to use this service. You can turn it off again after you use the service.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
