Tick icon changed colour

I notice today the tick icon which normally is green circle with a white tick has changed to a grey circle with a black tick. If i double click on the black tick it changes back to green with white tick. Does anyone know why the change in  colour?

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Grey circle with a black tick means (on my machine) that Norton is not fully loaded.
Edit: see <here>.

Try run LiveUpdate + machine restart.

Maybe, your Updates preference is:  Apply Updates Only on Reboot

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Check your version of Norton Security. There is a new update announced this morning. One of the changes is to the appearance of the icon in the system tray.    https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/norton-2217246-windows-now-available

Hi @sparks118
Edit: machine restart on my machine renders grey tray Icon for a second....then tray Icon goes green (normal).

May be cosmetic re Norton takes longer to fully load, now.   Maybe, grey tray Icon "status" varies by machine.

My setup is W10 Fast Startup Off and Norton Boot Time Protection Normal

Edit: add green (normal) pic.

Thanks for replies, my icon start grey then changes back to green as well.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Maybe if Norton Boot Time Protection is changed to Aggressive, so that Norton loads before anything else ?

Then tray icon might behave as expected ?

All: Setting the boot time protection to "aggressive" and a reboot corrects the issue as F 4 E suggested.

Full green tick with checkmark as soon as the tray icon is visible on all my machines. Two are AMD based, two others are Intel based. Same version Norton on all, 22.17.2.46. Could be a setup difference as you are suggesting.

This is happening on all 3 of my pcs. Is this a bug or my 3 computers? Dell Alienware Aurora R7, Alienware 18 and Alienware 17 R5.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

I was confused by the unusual new grey icon with a black tick which appeared in the systray and seemed to stay like that for a while before it changed to the recognizable orange type with a green tick and guessed it was loading.  I had a look at my Boot Time Protection setting and it was green but "off" which must be the default setting because I didn't touch it. I find that changing it to "aggressive" or "normal" brings up the more usual orange with green tick type icon immediately with "aggressive" and immediately (sometimes) or in any event much quicker with "normal" on startup with my Win 7 machine so I've chosen "normal" and see how it goes.

...any user experience different regarding grey Icon with machine cold start vs machine restart?

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Based on past Norton icon behaviors, I am guessing that the grey icon is the new "stateless" or neutral indicator.  This would appear at startup before Norton's health status has been updated.  It does not mean that Norton is not up and running, it only means that the status has not yet been reported.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

My systray icon takes forever! to change to green since the last 100MB+ update from LiveUpdate. I have my boot protection set to aggressive. So no that's not it. Also when I click the greyed out systray icon Norton does not open.

I was going to make a new thread but so far I've seen two posts about the systray icon.

No there aren't a ton of programs loading at startup either. Only Norton and nVidia and the standard startup programs from Windows.

I have 16GB of DDR3 1066Mhz, Windows 10 Pro 64 bit (up to date), an and AMD CPU. So it is not lack of resources.

Green means go! Grey means buy hair dye?

I still get the grey icon for a few minutes until it turns back to green. Is it safe to go on-line while it's grey or wait still it turns green?

"Setting the boot time protection to Normal or Aggressive and a reboot corrects the issue"

Setting boot time protection is an "Option" not a requirement to have the program run/startup properly!

I am using this on Windows 7 x64 and until the last 2 Updates I have never had this long time delay from Grey to Green issue on Restart or Boot Up - it always came up Green immediately.

I dont use, and prefer not to use the Boot Time "Option".

This is clearly some type of bug which needs correction.

In the meantime, Norton should at least tell us whether we have full protection or not while the Icon is in the Grey color mode?!!!

If Norton could report that you have full protection, the icon would be green.  Grey means it is not yet reporting anything, good or bad.  The alternative would be to not show the icon at all until the health check was finished and the status could be reported - but, of course, then you wouldn't even know if Norton had launched at startup.  I don't know why the status check is taking longer than it did in the past (maybe some new component is slow to report?), but the grey icon is an expected behavior while Norton finishes checking itself for issues.

Can we get an official reply from someone that works from Norton and not a board moderator please? Thank you!

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Someone asked if there was a difference between cold boot or restart. The answer is no. It still takes forever to change to green even after a restart. No fast start up is not on. I know someone is eager to ask about that too.

try Disable programs that run at Startup that are not needed to run at Startup

Re: Tick icon changed colour

I doubt that'll speed up Norton's "health check" but I'll try Safe Mode with Networking. Every since the last two major updates to NGC engine the time has increased before it changes to a green check mark. It is interesting how the employees on this forum are ignoring this issue.

I'm sure we don't all have the same startup configuration (all posters in this thread).

Edit - Fail, didn't know the systray icon didn't appear in Safe Mode.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

I found the problem for me.

I checked through every Norton Security setting and some of them changed I guess from an update because I didn't change them. E.g. Idle time optimizer set to ON, Network Cost Awareness set to ON and a few others too. I think the update changed some of my settings.

The last setting I checked was Settings, Antivirus, Boot Time Protection and it was set to OFF (I didn't do that). Now I set it to Aggressive and tada! 10 seconds until the check mark was green. 5 seconds after a restart.

So one of the updates from LiveUpdate set some, not all Norton settings to default. Now they're fixed.

"Off" delays loading some Norton drivers so that your computer boots faster, "aggressive" increases boot time.  If your computer is booting slower, it is allowing more time for Norton to complete its health check before displaying the icon, so it may only seem like the health status is appearing sooner (when actually, the icon is just appearing later in the boot sequence when the health check is farther along).  Are you computing the time from when you press the PC's start button, or from the time the Norton icon first appears?  I am genuinely curious if the Boot Time Protection selection is affecting the actual time it takes Norton to run its health check or just delays the icon display till later in the process.  I personally use the "aggressive" setting and my icon has very little to no lag in displaying green (although I concede that it previously never had any lag at all).

No, I started watching the clock when the desktop appeared and it took 1 minute 20 seconds for it to change. It never took that long before but it was set to off which I didn't do.

A long time ago on this forum someone suggested a fix for some problem I can't remember and they said set boot time protection to aggressive. I used to use normal not aggressive.

The boot time seems the same (all systray icons appear and obviously the desktop is there) with it off or aggressive. It just doesn't change to a green check mark fast unless it is set to aggressive I haven't tried normal. If I clicked it when it was grey it wouldn't open Norton.

It is not lag it is Norton doing it's health check taking longer when boot time protection is set to off.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Irrespective of Off, Normal, or Aggressive, it's taking up to two minutes to go from grey to green for me on 3 different laptops, so it would be nice to know why it's started doing this and when is it "safe" to plough on with some work - wait until fully green?

If so, that's OK, I'd just like to know why it's now taking so long to be "fully loaded".

Ta.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

I never use BTP and never had a problem until the last 2 updates.

Whether a cold startup or a Restart it takes my computer 2 mins to go from a Greyed out icon to the Multi-colored icon.

Norton clearly did something in the last 2 updates that needs to be acknowledged and fixed.

My windows 7 system security is nearing expiration and my new windows 10 system WAS going to get Norton installed, but neither is going to happen unless a fix comes forth soon.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Just to add even with Boot Time Protection set to "Normal" it works as expected. So I guess one of the updates messed up some settings and since I've adjusted them it is okay.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Not it isn't. For me BTP off, Normal, Aggressive makes no difference. At startup this grey icon appears and takes ~3 minutes to turn green OR it doesn't appear at all and then ~3 minutes later it shows up as grey and then a few seconds later from that point turns green.

Same symptoms on 3 different laptops (yes, Fast Startup is off, yes, everything is up-to-date).

So I think we have a messed up update and it's getting tiresome with the time it takes and its inconsistency of behaviour.

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Hi all,

I recently started a similar thread about this, and have been directed here.

I just wanted to add that mine started playing up upon installing Windows 10 1903, so I wondered if it were the same for anyone else, & if so, relevant for Norton to look into?

Re: Tick icon changed colour

Mine are all 1809 and this "feature" is becoming deeply tedious now having to wait about 5 minutes for laptops to have Norton loaded on booting and a green tick so it would be nice to know when this is getting fixed...
