Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

I have a new work laptop running Windows 7 x64 version.  It came with Norton Internet Security 2012 installed with a 30 day trial.  I was using that when Firefox 23 came out.  It updated to Norton Vulnerability Protection version 11.4.0.6 -1 within a day or two after that.

Today I installed Comcast Norton Business Suite 20.1.0.24 and ran Live Update until it said there were no new updates.  I was then at 20.4.0.40, but the Norton Vulnerability Protection was stuck at 11.1.0.73 even after rebooting.

I uninstalled NBS, rebooted and then ran the Norton Removal Tool and rebooted again.  I then downloaded the latest NBS I could find, which was 20.3.1 and again ran Live Update, applying patches when asked, until Live Update said there were no new updates.  Again I'm at 20.4.0.40, but the but the Norton Vulnerability Protection is stuck at 11.1.1.5 -2, which is what came with 20.3.1.

The ipsbho.dll file is version 11.1.0.73 and dated 11/15/2012.  It is 387,040 bytes.  Obviously it's not being updated, despite the fact that I got several "browser toolbar" updates in Live Update.

I checked the LUE logs directory and looked at the log for all things marked browser toolbar or plugin and came up with this list:

15:00:32.144 INF -  Moniker: {59414FA6-C6D4-4c78-A752-B677CBDD3C6B},  Product: IDSS Firefox Plugin,  Version: 2013,  Language: SymAllLanguages.

15:00:32.378 INF - Catalog: idss$20chrome$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip

Of those 6 listed file, only 3 are in the LUE download folder:

idss$20firefox$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip

norton$20confidential$20firefox$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip

norton$20confidential$20browser$20toolbar$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip

As far as I can tell, the only one that was updated recently was norton$20confidential$20browser$20toolbar$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip, the other two haven't been updated since February and show the latest browser as being Firefox 19.   This leads me to believe that the updates that specficially mention Firefox or chrome in the file name aren't relevant anymore.

That's still a problem since idss$20browser$20toolbar$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip is missing.

Checking the log file I see this:

15:00:32.706 INF - File does not exist on the server.; HTTP status = 404, File: idss$20browser$20toolbar$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip.

15:00:32.846 INF - File does not exist on the server.; HTTP status = 404, File: idss$20chrome$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip.

This means the idss$20browser$20toolbar$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip is missing off the server, so the update is never downloaded. This is easily verified by trying to download the file manually:

liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com/idss$20browser$20toolbar$20plugin_2013_symalllanguages_livetri.zip

The file needs to be put back on the server in order for the update to work.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

You note getting NBS up to 20.4.0.40. You say there are no more updates available after getting to that version.

Did you restart the computer after getting to that level and then run LiveUpdate until no updates are available? Then reboot again?

Maybe Yank can comment on his experience with Comcast's versions. There may be a difference with the Business version.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

Hi Morac,

I am on NIS 20.4.0.40 - fully updated and I am running FF 23 with NVP 11.4.0.6.-1 and NTB 2013.4.2.2 (although a non-player in this discussion).  I am also on Win 7 64 Bit SP1.

I just checked my  ipsbho.dll in C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine\20.4.0.40\ips.

My version from the Details Tab is 11.1.0.73, date modified 4/8/2013 8:27 PM

My General Tab Shows it:

Created:     Sunday June 16, 2013,  3:10.08 PM

Modified:    Monday, April 08, 2013,  8:27:13 PM

Accessed:  Sunday, June 16, 2013,  3:10:08 PM

I really wonder what the others in the other post we are also involved with have for their ispbho.dll?

<edit> peterweb - see my post here in the other thread.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

That ipsbho.dll is the version I have on my home laptop running NIS 20.4.0.40.

I wonder if the problem has to do with installing an upgrading an older version of NIS/N360/NBS.  It seems like upgrading a current version works fine.  Upgrading an old version to the latest version somehow drops the IPS plugin update.

Also yes, I did reboot, though it's not requires in Windows 7.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

I'm from the other thread on this issue and after cleanly installing NIS Online today, my ipsbho.dll is v11.1.0.73, 377 KB (387.040 bytes).

Interesting observation!  FWIW, when upgrading and NSS that is more than one version old, we always recommend a clean install - s in uninstall, run the NRT and reinstall latest version.  Don't know if that would help or not.  With Comcast, downloads we are more or less left iwht the downloads that are on their servers.

I ams til waiting on word from Norotn - and since it is late Friday - may wait all weekend!

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

Hi DhuKarnain,

That would seem to make sense and agree with mine (as far as the modified date goes) - as we may be on different sides of the International Date Line.  Of course the Created and Accessed dates would the day it was downloaded/installed - which would be tomorrow for you!

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

I was using the most recent downloadable version of NIS to install--which should be 20.4.0.40 according to my file's details. I have the full installer directly from Symantec's server.

My ipsbho.dll shows version 11.1.0.73 with the date modified as April 8, 2013.

**note that I am now running the latest version Firefox 23.0.1

Yep!

  • NTB = 2013.4.2.2
  • NVP = 11.4.0.6-1

Everything enabled and working on two systems.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Same for me. FF23.0.1 and same NTB and NVP as noted in Krusty's post.

All working fine.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

Today, I installed Windows 8 and 7 on a physical and virtual machine respectively and was able to re-create the problem on both of them. Not sure what is going on. Again, this is using the latest version of Firefox 23.0.1 and NIS 20.4.0.40. Systems up and running prior to a couple of days ago are fine and have updated to the latest version of NVP.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

ambrox, thanks for that feedback - just a quick question - where did you download NIS from?  This is the most recent link to the NIS download (v 20.14.0.40).  It does not require as much updating as if you use on of the older versions(such as one you have saved on your system)  I am just trying to tell which download the NVP that is different is coming from.

Yes, here too (although FF is not my main browser):

- Firefox  23.0.1

- NTB     2013.4.2.2

- NVP     11.4.0.6 - 1

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

20.4.0.40 is the installer version I've been using, downloaded from the same link. Again, on any new system installs, it won't update to the latest NVP. Any existing windows installations with NIS seem to be fine (my other PCs are fine in this regard). It only seems to be recent new installations that won't update, at least for me, which includes my main system and the previously mentioned physical and virtual test systems. I actually reinstalled Windows on my main systems several times with the same results, too, though at the time I was troubleshooting MS account problems on Windows 8--not expecting this issue with NIS.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

Well things are working today since my work laptop somehow updated the Norton Vulnerability Protection addon to version "12.0.0.380 - 1" this morning.   I didn't even know that version existed and it's different than the version on my home PC which is 11.4.0.6 - 1.  After that I could enable it.  I also updated to Firefox 23.0.1 this morning.

A few other notes:

1. When I installed, I used the latest link, but it was an old version of NBS (20.3.1.22).

2. The ipsbho.dll file is a red herring.  Despite the date differences, the file is identical on both my work (running NBS) and home (running NIS) PCs.

Re: Toolbar update missing from Live Update server

FWIW - I am on Comcast's Norton Securtiy Suite and it also updated this AM - see this post.

However, my NIS v 20.4.0.40 remains at 11.4.0.6-1???
