Two icons in the system tray

When I was running Norton 360 I would have 2 icons in the system tray about 25% of the time when my PC started up. I moved to Norton Security and for the first couple of weeks there was only one icon in the tray. Lately the double icon issue has come back in NS. It seems that this glitch has found its way into Norton's newest product. Since this issue has been around for a long time I guess we will have to live with it.

Hello Mark

How did you install NS? Depending on the installation method you used, we can attempt to fix this problem.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit Norton Core Security Plus 22.19.8.65 Core Firmware 282 Chrome latest version.

Hi markd1015,  Please see if the following helps > Settings > Antivirus > Boot Time Protection to Aggressive.  Also users state a reboot helps sometimes.

Mark, if yank's solution of setting boot protection to Aggressive doesn't work, and it usually does, ! just hide one.

Right click on taskbar/properties/customize. Hide one, and click on Save.

It does NOT affect Norton's normal operation.

Re: Two icons in the system tray

Floplot, I completely uninstalled Norton 360 and then installed Norton Security.

Yank, Boot time Protection is set to Aggressive.

Come on F4E, hiding a problem with a piece of software does not fix the issue. I know it is not a big problem and I do not believe it hinders NS from doing its job but this problem has been around for a while and should be fixed by Norton. When I was running Norton 360 I had as many as three icons in my tray. This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

Thanks for the replies all.

Hello

Do you have any other real time security programs installed now? What O/S and SP are you using now?

Re: Two icons in the system tray

I am running Windows 8.1. All Windows updates are current. I only use NS which is current. I do run Malwarebytes as a secondary adware/malware scanner but it does not run as a service or in the background. I know my system is clean from any kind of malware.

Re: Two icons in the system tray

Hi, Mark. I'm suggesting a workaround, not a fix. I am a user like you, and have NEVER in all the time I've used Norton, had 2 icons showing.

That suggests to me, it's not a universal problem.

Also, using Windows 8, do you completely shut down, as I'm sure you would know that Norton requires this to properly update etc.

Re: Two icons in the system tray

F4E, Yes I shut down correctly and I do not use hibernate or sleep. I have enclosed a picture of my desktop and if you look in the tray there are two icons. This occurred more frequently in Norton 360.

Re: Two icons in the system tray

Hi, Mark. I agree this problem has been around for a while, but I suspect it's low on the list of priorities in terms of a permanent fix.

Maybe it has to do with our differing operating systems worldwide, or maybe individual settings per user in Norton. ???

Your guess is as good as mine. When set to Aggressive, the boot time protection ensures Norton loads before anything else, thereby avoiding start up conflicts.

That's the only fix that does seem to stick. Do you have lots of programs starting at boot ?

Re: Two icons in the system tray

Hello F4E,

My computer runs fine. No boot issues at all. Something strange occurred about a week ago. I started my computer and was reading emails when I noticed the action center had a red flag. When I clicked it there was a message saying I had no anti virus installed. I had to re-install Norton Security. That was the only issue I have had. I attribute this to maybe a bad update but I immediately ran Malwarebytes scanner and did a complete scan when Norton Security was installed and fully updated. No malware was found.

As I mention before Norton Security is set to aggressive.

There is also a chance that some programs I have installed may also be causing the problem.  When I installed Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 I noticed I had some issues in event viewer that were not there previously. These events were not related to Norton but who knows if something is going on that is not being reported to the event viewer.

Thanks

Re: Two icons in the system tray

Yeah, Microsoft has been known to cause a few problems from time to time.

Often a Norton reinstall will help, too. Sometimes it's just a process of elimination. Pita, I know !
