Unable to send email

I work for an accounting firm. Recently, our partnered IT firm installed Norton Security. Since then, I have suffered horribly slow speeds, with norton eating up half of the meager resources my computer has, and (this is the worst part) I am unable to send emails. Anywhere. It is not just me either, but everyone in our office.

We have Microsoft Office 2010 and use the outlook included there. The norton security version is 22.9.0.71. Every time we send an email, we get the message Error: Too many errors and the email goes to the sent items folder, but is not sent to the client. We have had to manually contact each of our clients per telephone because they did not receive critical letters regarding taxation. I have exhausted every avenue I could think of or find online. I tried the following:

Disabling outgoing email scanning. (which is suggested in other forum posts)

Disabling all email scanning.

Disabling the firewall.

Disabling the norton addin in Microsoft Outlook.

Disabling every norton setting I could find.

In conclusion: short of uninstalling norton completely I have been unable to find a way to send emails at all.

Re: Unable to send email

If disabling all the features you did does not help, it would seem to be something other than Norton causing the problem.

First question is what security software was on the system before installing Norton? Did the IT firm use the removal utility for that software to fully remove it before installing Norton? Any remnants of another security software can cause hard to diagnose problems like you are seeing.

Also, check with your email provider to see if they are having any difficulties.

Re: Unable to send email

Hello

Please disable the Anti-Spam feature-----Settings>AntiSpam. Let Outlook do the spam catching. I have Office 2013 and that is what I have done. If your Email Client uses ports different than 25 and 110, you can disable email scanning. None of these things would stop email sending. It sounds like more of an Office issue. Is Office up to date? Does Office 2010 still get Windows Updates?

What Operating System are you on and what bit?

Thanks.

Re: Unable to send email

Anti-Spam is already disabled. Like I said, I disabled absolutely everything. Outlook is up to date as far as I know, but I'll check to see if windows update is running properly. It's windows 8.1, 64 bit.

Re: Unable to send email

We used to have Kaspersky Internet Security, but it was removed with the proper uninstall utility so I doubt it was that. I'll try the ISP, but since outlook itself is not showing any errors I don't think the problem lies there. In the past when they had issues outlook showed errors as well, which it does not now. As far as outlook knows, its mails are going through just fine.

Re: Unable to send email

As you are out of ideas, maybe try the Kaspersky removal tool again.  http://support.kaspersky.com/common/service.aspx?el=1464

If this still does not help, try removing Norton to test. Windows Defender and Windows Firewall will give you some basic protection while you try sending some test emails.

If you are successful in sending, install Norton again and test again.

Re: Unable to send email

Hi George L. Bertram.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I work at Symantec on the team that provides the email client components. The Fourm Moderators are correct, and contacting your ISP or IT department would be recommended. I am reaching out to you at this point because I understand that this is your busy time of year and from your orignal post, your office is not able to send any email and it appears like the problem is related to installing our software on your systems.

But, in your last post, you mentioned that Outlook is not showing any errors. Could you please provide more details about the error you are seeing and where it is coming from? Please avoid including personally identifiable information (PII). Either attach a screen shot if it is a msgbox, or write down the message and error codes. "Too many errors" can mean differnet things depending on the source and context. The exact error codes are necessary in your case.

I don't want to take up your time by sending you on a wild goose chase. I don't want to take a guess because what works for one error will not matter for another. Normally errors that appear to be coming from the mail server are outside our control. The email proxy is our method of managing the connection between email client and email server. The proxy does not turn on and off so the only way to rule it out as the cause is to uninstall the product. When it has nothing to do, it operates in passthru mode, and is usually benign.

If you have encountered similar issues in the past with your ISP, or this error only occurs under certain circumstances, like when using a mailing list, or sending attachments, or sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, and seems to be random, removing our software is not the answer.

Please provide the details of the error. If you can't avoid leaking PII, send a private message to me or to one of the forum moderators.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Unable to send email

I would like to thank everyone for their answers, and also apologize to the Norton staff for implying that the problem may be norton. Turns out, as our IT guy informed us on friday afternoon, our ISP outsources its spam filters to a couple of companies outside the country and two of them are messing with the way norton works. Unfortunately I can't remember what the names are, but the problem should be solved by tomorrow if he can contact them.

Thanks again.
