"An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Hello,

My subscription to Norton recently ran out so I had to renew, but after renewing and installing new product it will not activate. The product activated fine on my laptop after the renewal, but on my desktop I get an error saying "Cannot connect to the Norton Server. An unexpected error has occurred.". I've tried countless times over the past few days and it will not connect. I'm having no internet issues and like I stated my laptop connected to the Norton servers just fine at the same time I was trying on my desktop. I contacted support and after over an hour of trying he said to try activating after 24 hours and still nothing.

Thanks in advance.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Have you disabled Windows Fast Startup feature? If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

It could be a problem with your Norton Installation. Downloading and running the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool will get you a fresh install.   www.norton.com/nrnr

Be sure you read the Before you begin section, and run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Just another thought which you might like to try prior running the nrnr tool.

Thank you for the responses.

Unfortunately I have tried these solutions multiple times with no success. Run the removal tool and reinstalled countless times. Tried setting my default browser to IE, Chrome, Edge. No success.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Hello

As of now, Edge is not yet supported by Norton. Symantec has to wait for the extensions to be released by Microsoft.

Has your license been bought in the same area as you are trying to activate it? Did you buy it in the same country as you are now trying to install it? How long have you been trying to install it?

Thanks.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Im aware that Edge isnt supported. I only threw that in there as im out of options and trying anything to get this stupid product to work. The issue happened on all browsers attempted. Yes im in the exact same area I was in when I paid for the renewal and the same area ive lived in for years. I have been trying to activate this for over a week now.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Squibsorz:

after renewing and installing new product it will not activate.

Normally doing a renewal, there is no need to reinstall - a bit of clarification please re installing new product - did you change from an older product (NIS/N360) to a newer product (NSBU)?

The product activated fine on my laptop after the renewal,

Did you reinstall on the laptop?  Just enter the new product key or what?

Run the removal tool and reinstalled countless times.

Did you uninstall via Control Panel prior to running the Norton Removal Tool (NRT)?  Did you try the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool as peterweb suggested?  The tool he suggested is different from the NRT.

A couple of questions in order to try to gain better insight into your situation, since the normal corrections do not appear to work:  Perhaps a better understanding of how you are doing the "renewal" - thru Norton or by using a new product key?

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Yank:

Yes when I went to renew there was a deal to upgrade to NSBU when I previously had N360.

I did not have to reinstall on my laptop and it is showing as N360 as the program installed, but is activated for a year even though I purchased the license for NSBU.

I tried the NRNR program, but will try control panel uninstalling and then running NRT.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

I just tried removing the program via control panel, running NRT, and then reinstalling and its still not working.

Update:

I just went to my Services tab on Norton site to download and install NSBU on my laptop and it installed and activated correctly.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Hello

You said in your Opening Post that NSBU installed and activated ok on your laptop. The problem computer was your desktop computer. In your last post, you just mentioned that it installed and activated correctly. I thought that it was already activated on your laptop?

The key for NSBU will activate any of the programs..

On the problem computer, please uninstall using the Control panel method, restart, not reboot, then use the NRT and restart once again.. Don't let it install another program. Use this link instead.

www.norton.com/latestnsbu  See if that will install properly on the problem computer. You may have to enter your key. Don't use any spaces or dashes in the key. Please remember to run Live Update after install and activate. On the problem computer, make sure there aren't any other security programs installed. If there are any, then remove with their removal tool. Also make sure you are using an Administrator account on both computers.

Thanks.

Hello,

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, the problem computer is the desktop. The laptop update was just saying that this product installed perfectly fine on my laptop so the problem is only the desktop.

I followed the steps that you listed and the product installs fine, but when trying to activate im still getting this:

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Hello

Could there be some malware on the desktop which is preventing activation? It might be worthwhile to try customer support again to get the software activated. You might end up with a different support person . Do you have any other real time security program in that desktop which could be conflicting?

Thanks.

Hi Squibsorz,

According to Norton, the Activation Service is up and running, so the problems appears to be on your end - specifically your Norton program or you system.

Since you are having an issue with a service that is running without problems, please  Contact Support.

Have you tried to connect to your Norton Account via the My Norton or Subscription Links found under Account Information when you select Help from the main page of your Norton Product?

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

This is absolutely crazy...2 days ago I spent 2 hours online with a tech whom could not fix this error. He had to elevate this issue to a Senior Technician whom never called. For one last try I thought I would check the forum again to see if anyone else had recently posted but this is still the only post I have seen. While reading this post I clicked  the above link with the latest nsbu and it activated (strangely with Internet Explorer) but I closed it and tried with Firefox and Chrome and everything seemed fine. When I opened firefox this morning it went into the product requires activation & the same error. What is going on???? I believe my case number is: 160740  Please this is ridiculous can anyone fix this???

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

I'm not on an Asus rig, I'm actually on an MSI laptop I purchased only a couple of months ago. I have a feeling it has something to do with the OEM version of Norton Security they provided with the laptop. I've gone as far as using the Norton Removal tool and reinstalled the latest version of Norton Security Deluxe, all to no avail. It seems no one knows what's causing this, so I'm at the point of doing a reset on my laptop as I feel like this butchered my my OS drive and I'm not to keen on that.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

I have the same issue too: "An unexpected browser error has occurred"

Have been using Norton 360 with no issues on my MSI laptop (2QF Apache Pro)(Windows 10) for 10 months now.

A few days ago, when trying to sign in to my identity vault I noticed that it no longer asked me for the password as usual, but wanted me to sign in. Each time I tried to sign in I got the 'unexpected browser error has occurred' screen that Squibs posted.

I followed advice on another thread and logged out of my account on the main dash board, but only to get the same error when I tried to log back in. Now I can neither log in to my dashboard or my vault (I can still log in to my account via the website).

The dashboard recognizes that my subscription is still active even though I can no longer sign in via the dash board so hopefully I am still protected?

I too have tried downloading the Norton removal tool and reinstalling, cycling through various browsers and turning off fast start up, all to no avail. I have no other antivirus software apart from Windows defender.

I don't know what else to try, but hopefully posting flags up that this isn't a one off problem but others are having it too.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was on Easter break.

For EarlScheib & Remmo, Can you go to Programs & Features (Go to Run > and type appwiz.cpl in the Run box and press enter) and see if you have the program Nahimic for MSI in the list? If it is there, can you uninstall it, restart the computer, and then see if you can activate the Norton product?

Now, this is not a solution. I am trying to see if this program is somehow breaking the activation. If it is, we will have to get to the bottom of it.

Hey Vineeth,

Hope you had a good Easter break.

I uninstalled Nahimic for MSI as you said and then I was indeed able to log back in to both Norton dashboard and my vault!

As I understand it, Nahimic is an audio sound program, would never have though of that being the problem, so thank you so much for your help.

Cheers, Remmo

Thanks Remmo. Easter break was great!

Good to see that you were able to activate the product. Let me dig to the bottom of it now. Meanwhile, can you please reinstall Nahimic for MSI and see if the problem re-occurs? Hope it doesn't.

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

Reinstalled Nahimic for MSI as requested, signed out from the dashboard and the problem returned with the same error as before, so it looks like the culprit here. As soon as I uninstalled it again I was able to sign back in with no problems.

It is surprising what audio and/or video drives can affect adversely especially on laptops where what seem to be standard drivers from the named source are often tailored specifically for the model of laptop ...

I'm glad Vineeth hit the mark on this.

Go to your start menu and type the appwiz.cpl and then uninstall the Asus Connect App. After doing so restart your PC and you should be able to activate it.

I never saw the Asus Launcher program, but I did turn off one of the other Asus motherboard programs and finally got it to activate. I believe it was the Asus Sonic Studio program that I turned off to activate and then just reinstalled it. So it is some of the Asus motherboard feature programs that are preventing the activation. I can check which specific one it was when I get home, but Im pretty sure it was the Sonic Studio or the Gamefirst.

Yeah I agree with prebuilts, but the features that have been giving people problems are features of a premium motherboard that are nice to have and also some of the features which differentiate premium mobo's from each other. So it would nice if Norton can workout a fix to allow us to use these features and not have it effect the security software.

I have an ASUS board in my desktop that I built but it's no longer what you'd call Premium, if it ever was -- ASUS M4A78T-E -- but again I remove the fancy stuff that has little value for what I do with my machine. But then I'm not into gaming ....

I just wanted to confirm it was the Asus Sonic Studio. This is a very common program on a very popular brand of mobo. So much so Norton should correct the issue.

It could also be argued that as the Asus software is interfering with the Norton Activation, maybe Asus should look into their software.

The Asus software has no issues playing nice with every other program I have installed. Only Norton has issues with it. The last several years I have had several issues with Norton software from Identity safe not working with my browser to the login loop to this current login issue. It very well may be on ASUS but the multiple login issues I have personally had on multiple PC's makes me believe it is on Norton.

To all who have the dreaded "unexpected browser error".  I fixed this by exiting all vendor specific icons in the system tray (Right Click icons by the clock and exit all of the ones with the option).  Apparently one of the vendor apps on my build was interfering with the sign in ability of Norton somehow.  Nahimic is installed on my system, but did not confirm if it was that one or not.

Hope this helps!

Re: "An unexpected browser error has occured." when trying to activate my Norton Security with Backup

kgta57, I can confirm closing Nahimic in the system tray does in fact fix the error from occurring. I am currently looking for the latest version of Nahimic to test that and will update after I find that it did.

Post a link if anyone knows the latest version of Nahimic if they find it before I do.

Hmm...I'm not sure where to find Nahimic latest version, I only had to exit the apps in sys tray one time to get my Norton product to work, Nahimic doesn't seem to effect it after I was able to sign into my product.  Hopefully it's the same for you!
