uninstall norton security suite for w10 update

I want to update to W10 today.  Some locals told me they had problems with Norton Security Suite, and I should uninstall it and enable Windows Defender prior to updating.  Then I should reinstall Norton (which we have through Comcast).  Is this correct?  I have version 22.7.0.76 --

Re: uninstall norton security suite for w10 update

As long as your product is working correctly, there should be no problems upgrading to Win 10 with Norton still installed. That is the way I have done both my Win 10 upgrades.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Thanks for your quick reply.  I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on this 5 year old PC.  I did not turn Norton off, and things seem to be running OK.  I still need to check on one Intel app, but your answer was correct.

Re: uninstall norton security suite for w10 update

I updated to windows 10 when it first became available (also on a 5 yr old PC - Dell XPS 8300).  It ran for a long time with no problem at all.  But after a 3 wk overseas trip, I came back to get a number of software upgrades, and now my PC get multiple blue screen crashes.  My local PC support center have taken the PC from me twice, and both times remove Norton, and got the PC up and running.  Charge me a fee, and send me home to re-install Norton and try again.   Both times they say it's a Norton conflict, but I've been using Norton for a long time (10 years plus, and trust it).  So now I'm stuck, I have 16months left on my subscription, and someone telling me I should ditch it..   I do hope it's something else, but my PC just crashed again for  the third time in as many weeks....  I hope it's something else, but all my hardware tests pass without problem, and so now I have to look for driver updates etc to find where this odd error is coming from....  I'm saying this just in case others have also started to have problems.

Good luck I hope it works for you.

Re: uninstall norton security suite for w10 update

Dave -- mine is a Dell Studio XPS 9100.  I was worried because mine had a 1.5 TB drive, using Inter Rapid Storage Technology driver 9.6.0.1014.  Intel never published an updated driver for these older chipsets.  After I upgraded, I can't even find that Intel RST is running -- still learning where everything is in W10.  Under hardware, there are now about 5 or 6 entries for "Intel Chipset Quickdata Technology Device" that are not functioning, because they don't have a driver.  I bet your PC problems are related to an Intel Device Driver.  See this Dell forum item for my discussion:

The last thing I did, before I upgraded, was create an image of my disk, and validated the image, so if things go south, I should be able to return to Windows 7, with little or no problems.  I've always liked Norton apps, because they seem to be pretty stable.  I'm getting a little off-topic here -- sorry -- HTH.

Re: uninstall norton security suite for w10 update

Thanks for the suggestion - I did re-check the drives for my 2 2TB HDD, and my 128g SSD.  They were all current, but when checking the SSD, it had some errors (caused I think by the latest crash from updating).  It used windows to fix it, and I now think I'm okay.

I now think my main problem was a conflict between Defender and Norton.  So i turned off Norton, updated defender.  Then turned Norton back on, whilst disabling auto windows updates.  I hope this fixes it.  This site helped me work through it, so thanks.

Why do you think you have a conflict between Norton and Defender?

Re: uninstall norton security suite for w10 update

The error messages led me to this, found on this site, and your comment.

so this is a lot of what i've done to fix my problem.

Hope that explains it.

peterweb:

What  P Mossel  found about uninstalling Norton to get the Defender update has worked for me with this issue.

One thing to add, before reinstalling Norton, go to Windows Security settings and turn off Windows defender manually. Then install Norton.

Further to peterweb's comments, Davec33 posted instructions in the thread Windows 10 update stopped because Nortons Security turns off Windows Defender for disabling Windows Defender's real-time protection in while Norton is temporarily uninstalled.

The only caveat is that users should remember to confirm that Windows Defender's real-time protection is re-enabled and protecting your system if you decide to permanently remove Norton at some point in the future.

I actually got my problem fixed yesterday :-)
1. Inactivate Norton Smart Firewall and Auto Protect
2. Reboot
3. Open Windows Defender an turn it on (couldn't do that when Norton was active and prior to reboot)
4. Run Windows Update -> Defender definitions were successfully installed
5. Reboot
6. Turn on Norton Smart Firewall and Auto Protect

I now expected that this should be OK until the next Defender definitions update (but the procedure above is at least much less time consuming than make a full uninstall/reinstall every time). BUT suddenly I couldn't open Defender anymore, only having a message saying that Defender has been inactivated and no longer protect this computer. This is good I think, because that is EXACTLY how it looks on my laptop (win10 and same Norton version as my desktop) and on that computer I have never seen this problem. So my guess is that now its running the way it's supposed to.
